Well-Living Wednesday & My Fave Way to Eat Sweet Potatoes

It's Well-Living Wednesday, and today I'm sharing with you my favorite way to eat sweet potatoes....by making Sweet Potato Chips!

Last week in my post "I want to be just like you," I wrote about how we need to be examples to our children, and those around us by choosing a healthy lifestyle, rather than going along with the fast paced life of processed snacks and fast food meals!

It's easy to use the excuse of not knowing what healthy snack alternatives to choose, so I'm going to make it easy by giving you some ideas! Recently in my house we have started making Sweet Potato Chips on a weekly basis! They are such a yummy way to eat sweet potatoes, and a great alternative to a bag of process chips! 10733374_305937026266004_989273959_n

Sweet Potato Chips

-Peel the sweet potatoes, then use the slicer side of the cheese grater to cut the sweet potatoes into chip style strips.  Toss the strips in a bowl with olive oil, then lay them out on a pan. (Using a pizza pan with holes in it cooks them the best) Lightly sprinkle with salt.  Cook at 200 degrees for 2 hours. (or you can put them in a dehydrator.)

Like my Kale Chip Recipe, these never seem to make it further than the pan.  Every time we make them, we stand over the finished product and eat them all up, even when I am trying to save some for later! They are that good!

So make the choice this week to switch out the bags of processed potato chips in your pantry for some homemade Sweet Potato Chips! & if you like those, then be sure to check out my recipe for Kale Chips and add those to your weekly snack rotation as well!

There are so many great options, and I'm sure the entire family will love them!

Here are my Weightloss stats for the week:

Week 13: -1.1lbs

Week 14: -.2lbs

Week 15: -1.3 lbs (152lbs) Total: -8.6lbs

I would love to hear if you try one of my chip recipes, and comment below with your favorite healthy snack!

What is your favorite healthy snack!??

Well-Living Wednesday- You Only Get One Body....Better Take Care of It

You only get one body....better take care of it!

Let that sink in for a minute!

Yesterday I read a blog post by Dr. Pragati from "Simple Medicine" about her 3 Healthy Living Tools, and this was the last one on her list.

"3. Gentleness

Surprised by this one? Don’t be! Being kind to oneself is the ultimate healthy living tool. You only have one life and one body. To me, this means understanding that there are times when workouts will be skipped and canned soup will be consumed. The important part is that you remember your good habits and always treat yourself with gentleness and love."

This really stuck out with me! I realized that it is so true! Being KIND TO OUR BODY IS SO IMPORTANT!

be kind

[Tweet ""Being kind to yourself is the ultimate Healthy-Living tool." -@DoctorPragati & @NFSisters"]

Many times at the closing of my Yoga Classes I will encourage people to be thankful for their bodies, all that they are capable of doing, and for being strong in all that we put them through.  But I have found a new realization of how true this is! We are given ONE BODY! And although some people have various issues that arise in their bodies, we need to be thankful for what we are given, and treat our bodies good!

Obviously this means through eating healthy, etc.  I talked about this some in my 'Made to Crave Week 1' Book Review, about our body being a temple. Yesterday though, it hit me that it means more than just the food we put in our bodies.  It is important to be easy on our bodies on the outside as well.  You should know your body, be aware of your body, and listen to it.  If it is telling you to rest a day, or a week, then do it! If it is telling you not to push harder in a workout, then be OKAY where you are for that day, in your workout!

This speaks so heavily to me right now since I am experiencing some knee pain, and have had to sit out from running.  So badly I have wanted to put a knee brace on, and go out and run, pushing through the pain.  (Even though the doctor told me to rest from running for 3-6 weeks).  It is so hard sometimes to ease up on our bodies when we are used to pushing ourselves.  Especially for me, I just sat out from running while I was pregnant, so I was so excited to get started, and be on track to a half marathon this Fall.....WRONG!

My body had something else in mind!

But instead of being frustrated and upset with my body, today I am going to change my outlook on things!

Today I CHOOSE GENTLENESS!

I choose to be gentle with my body, to not push it beyond it's limits, to listen to what it is telling me, and to respect it and treat it well!

After all, I only get one shot.....this is the only Body I'll be getting on this earth!

How to Balance Your Grocery Cart & WLW 12

How do you go to the grocery store??

Do you go with a plan?

Do you have a list?

Do you have 5 different lists?

Do you have a menu made for the week, or for the month?

Do you have a budget on how much you will spend?

Do you go when you are hungry? (bad idea!)

Do you have set foods that you buy each time you go to the store?

Today we are discussing HOW TO BALANCE YOUR GROCERY CART! So whether you go with a menu in mind, a specific plan, or a budget, or you just randomly decide to go pick up groceries for the week without a plan of what you are getting, this BALANCE will help you map your way through the store, and if you stick with it will result in healthier choices for your grocery shopping!

image1

So here's the plan!

In order for you to pick the healthiest, and closest to their natural form foods, you need to look at your shopping cart with an 80-20 ratio!

image1-1

On the 80% side, you are looking at whole foods.

Things like your:

-Fruits

-Vegetables

-Meats

-Cheeses

-Eggs

-Dairy

The 20% would consist of your more processed foods: (in my cart this would be...)

-Granola

-Canned black beans and corn

-Salsa

-Pizza Sauce

-Blue Corn chips

-Cereal

You get the idea!

But here's the SECRET! Think about your grocery store this way, and the way you shop could change drastically!

The 80% of your shopping should come from the outer edges of your grocery store! Stay on the perimeter for 80% of what you buy, and your cart will be full of those things mentioned above.  The fruits, veggies, meat, dairy, etc.  Picture the store that you buy groceries at in your mind, and imagine the items on the 80% list. Those are the things that you will find in the perimeter of every grocery store! SO! Stay along the perimeter of the store and you will be getting better foods, that are most likely at their most natural state.

Then, for the 20% of your cart you can snag things from the inner aisles, but keep those at minimal.  Buy your veggies fresh, not canned or even in steam able bags! I know it is much easier to pop open a can or toss a bag in the microwave, believe me, I do it too! But lately I have been trying to buy more of my veggies, my dinner sides at their raw, natural state.  Even if it take me a little longer to cook it.

I really focussed on this rule today while shopping, and this was my cart just from the produce section....it was already full!

image2

Then I kept all my items from the perimeter in the big part of my cart, and the top basket I used for the 20% of my shopping, the inner aisles.  I came home feeling so good about myself and my grocery store visit!

image1-2

So try it next time you go shopping, see if it won't change your perspective when it comes to filling your basket with foods! Just remember 80% of your foods should be picked up from the perimeter of the store, 20% can be picked up from the inner aisles!

WLW Episode 6

I honestly don't know what I am planning to write about here… I had planned on talking about how getting off your routine can be difficult when trying to lose weight… but everyone knows that! :D I was looking for a picture to compare with another.. and the same time my mom and sister were making another. They had no clue that I was even doing that… when they sent me their picture it just brought me to tears- for real. I have never posted my wedding pictures online… they are so embarrassing. I hate them. I was the biggest ever. I couldn't even tell you what I weigh in them. I have always been big, always struggling with my weight, not very active… but when I went to college I gained like the Freshman 30. I lived off of ramen noodles and KFC Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. I don't eat either of those today… Sister took a picture of a picture while we were in Texas at my dad's and said "We are so using this…" I had zero intentions of doing so. It is strange how something can hit you so hard in the stomach… I wasted so much of my life FAT! My high school and college years. But I am SO blessed the man that is my husband still loved me for ME.. not for my outward… But anyways.. here is the picture:

2

I was only 19 when I married my husband… and I looked like that. I literally HATE my pictures. I have set goals to take beach wedding pictures (before we lived at the beach) 2x before. When I get to {THIS} weight, we will take pictures.. I want to wear a little white sundress… but both times I have successfully lost weight, yea-- you guessed it.. I get pregnant. So the goal this time is to NOT get pregnant… and to get those pictures! The picture above makes me so very sad. I am just so thankful I know what to do to lose weight.. the issue is, I DO STRUGGLE.. and it is so very easy for me to put weight on… My family has said each time I have lost weight-- "Wow, I didn't see you this big!" I know I was NEVER happy with me, comfortable with ME.. I always had skinny friends…. ALL of my college friends were skinny. I was jealous, but I ate and ate and ate.. Just ask my roommate. UGH! Wow, seriously, I keep scrolling up… and just shaking my head.

I just read a blog today about a mom who said "I will never look like I did when I got married." She had a beautiful wedding dress, in shape, looking happy…. For me it is the other way- I don't want to ever look the way I did on my wedding day. So freaking embarrassing. So.. anyways.. on to better pictures. HAHA!

2

So above you see a picture with 3 months difference, almost to the day. And guess what else?? There is a 22lb loss there! I realize the one on the right is a little more close up, but there is a definite difference in my neck and stuff. But the main difference I see is that the girl on the right is HAPPY. I am in a happy place. I am happy with me, life, family, etc. I am feeling better. I am working hard getting the weight off.. I am focused, and overall I feel great! So there you guys have it… An updated picture for ya. Can't wait to share in another three months!

It's funny what we are sharing today.  Big Sis is discussing how she doesn't want to get back to her wedding self ever again, and just last night I told my husband, "I am going to look as good as when we got married one day!"

I remember in 2009 at my lingerie shower how I felt.  I had my party, then I had an after party with my closest friends! I tried on some of my fun lingerie for them as we sipped Pina Coladas, it was a fun special night for me.  I remember that night realizing how good I looked, and how good I felt. I am excited to feel that way again! Really, I am just excited to fit comfortably in all my clothes again!

And today I am one step closer! Feeling good about seeing these pounds drop off and staying in those 150's!!

Wahoo!

I am here to say that I hit the goal I made last week! I broke through the 160 barrier and am officially in the 150's! Maybe only by .2lbs, but I will take it!

10595971_278685848991122_1433715573_n

I didn't do perfect this past weekend.  I went home to visit with family and Big Sis, and I had to eat at our favorite, small town Mexican Restaurant! I only get to eat there a few times a year when I visit family, so I wasn't holding back.  And we were so busy with lots of kiddos, I didn't get to workout any from Friday-Monday.  I always wonder when I have a not great weekend and still lose...How much I would've lost if I would've stayed in my eating and working out routine.

Anyways, I am excited to have broken through and am in the 150's now.  I can't wait to continue seeing the numbers drop and getting back down to my comfortable size.  I haven't tried on any of my blue jeans yet, haven't had to since it is so hot here.  I am hoping that by mid-late September when I need to put them on, that I will be able to slip into them.  I am hesitant to try too soon, because even before I got pregnant I was up in weight, and all my jeans were so uncomfortably tight.  So i want to make sure to lose a good amount, so that when I put them on I am encouraged because they fit!

Hey guys!! I am so thankful to have WLW! It really is helping keep me motivated just like it did when we did our first round of it back in 2012 before we both go pregnant!! I am feeling great! I love knowing I can go take a two mile run without stopping!! It has taken me so long to get there. I bet I could do more if I had Mom and Little Sis with me… I just get so BORED! :D My weight is going down and I just SEE myself where I want to be! I am pretty excited too because we go to Cancun in January and that will be so awesome to not be over 200 pounds!! I mean, I guess there really isn't a huge difference since we live at the beach, haha!! But it motivates me! I am learning to stay focused on my desires… being with my babies, homeschooling, my Scentsy business, weight loss! More than weightless I am wanting my whole body to be stronger and more in shape and with running and CrossFit I will get there. I still have until April of 2015 on my FREE year with CF so I still have some pretty great months ahead of me! I am trying to refocus my body at getting up early so I can go to CF at 530am on three mornings a week. I can't on Monday or Wednesday because my husband has to be out of the house by 620am for PT and I won't get back until around 645-650.

So this week was a GREAT one. I took my measurements and I was so motivated!! Also another HUGE thing.. I finally splurged and bought some new workout shorts. My two favorite shorts are coming apart. One pair I have actually had since 2008.. I ran my first half marathon in them. The other pair I have had since 2012. Both have been worn on SO many runs… you can ask my mom, Little Sis, or my friend over in Destin.. it was time. My issue is, I hate to spend money on clothes… So I tend to go to Wal-Mart, buy a 10 dollar pair and wear them once and trash them.. because they just aren't great workout shorts- I am sure you know this… So I did it. I splurged.. I bought some adorable workout shorts… for $25!!!! The most expensive shorts I have ever bought. HAHA! I also bought a little black skirt and a blue top for my sister in law's wedding on Saturday.. wanna hear some GREAT NEWS???? All three things I bought were in Size LARGE! Not a single XL! And the shopping experience itself was amazing!!! Anyways.. let's get to the stats!

Well, let's just get honest from the beginning.  I would love to be able to write today bragging about the weight I lost, but sometimes it is just harder than other times, and sometimes you just don't lose.  Today, for the 2nd week in a row, I haven't lost any weight.  Now I know that I am at the place of losing where it is going to be a slow process, it's not all just going to fall off, but it should still be coming off.  But I will have to "man up" and take the blame for being stagnant at this point, because it is definitely my fault.  Since returning home from vacation, it' s like I have forgotten what I am working for, and forgot that to see these lbs come off takes works.  I just haven't been pushing myself much.  I will teach yoga 3-4 times a week, and just count that as my workout.  And if I can make it out to run, then I will.  I think I ran once last week.  Although I have still been eating well, I haven't been working hard to SWEAT! I have totally forgot about the high cardio workouts I was doing.

So, yes, disappointed I am this week.  Especially since I am sitting right above the 150's, and ready to be under that 160 mark and get there.  (for some reason that just feels good!) Now though, I know that I need to stop playing around, I'm not at this wonderful weight/body where I just need to maintain, I have made great progress since having Zander, but there is still so much more I want to achieve, so I plan on getting my butt back in gear and working hard this next week!!! I have between 10-15 more lbs to lose total to get where I need to be.  Like I said, I know for my body type and where I'm at, it want just shed off quickly, so my goal is to be there my December.

WLW Episode 3

I am proud to say that vacation was a success in the eating and working out department! Although, the first of the week we did better, and starting slacking at the end of the week.  I still did not come home disappointed or feeling guilty though.

It was great to go running each morning with Little Sis and Mom.  Plus running with others really does help you push yourself.  I ran further without stopping on vacation than I have at home.  Which just motivates me further now that I am home, knowing that I can do it! Towards the end of the week though I missed a couple of morning runs because my Little Girl was up what felt like most of the night.  She just wasn't sleeping, so I would sleep in some in the morning instead of running.  I felt bad at first, but I knew I needed that.

Now I am home for a bit, and ready to get back into my routine and back in the Cross Fit Gym! My weight will definitely be down next week!

So this week, post vacation has been harder for me than actually during vacation.  I got home and have been so busy and just wanted to rest, I have barely worked out.  Plus for me, I wake up in the morning with baby boy, but can't find motivation to get out of the house to go run.  It's the perfect time, but I have just always run at night, so both Monday and Tuesday I talked myself out of it, saying I would run at night. BUT, something has gotten in the way both evenings and I haven't made it out for a run all week!

Still though, I'm proud to have gone on vacation and worked out, and eating mostly well.  It was really a lot of fun to plan workouts and do them as a family.  We got to do yoga and agility workouts out by the pool, which almost always ended in me jumping in the water when I was done.  It was great! So even though I'm not down any this week, I am still proud to not be up any either.

I'm hoping in the next two week's I will be in the 150's.  I know that my weightless from here will be a slow progress. I'm just at that point in my postpartum journey, but I will keep pushing and will make progress, and I will reach my goals!

40lbs Down, 1 Month Post Baby

Well my little man is 1 month old already, and I am slowly but surely seeing this weight drop! Actually it's going pretty fast, but that's probably because I gained 65-70lbs during this pregnancy!

That seems so crazy to me, so much weight to gain, but I am officially 40lbs down, and have about 25-30lbs more to lose! And I am quite encouraged with the fact that I haven't even started working out yet, so hopefully once I start working out then I really continue to see the results.1532130_734587969927111_1578367399037048371_n

I have been very aware of what I am eating though, and counting calories using the app My Fitness Pal, (which is awesome by the way! It links with my FitBit so that is a lot of fun, and helpful!) Along with eating well, I have also been going on a lot of walks! Either I go in the evening with my husband, or me and my other mommy friends go together! Both is a lot of fun... I either get good time with my friends, or a nice family outing....I am actually really enjoying walking! Although I am super ready to start running.

Next wednesday will be my 6 weeks mark, so I think I will start doing some light workouts.  I plan to start with the Beach Body T25 workouts, since they are 25minutes, I thought they would be a good starting point.  Along with that I also plan on starting to run.  Slowly but surely I know, but I am excited! I am hoping to run a "Firecracker 4 Miler" on the 4th of July in my hometown.  That is my first running goal, then we will go from there.

And I couldn't give you an update on my weightless progress without showing you a little sneak peek of my adorable man on his 1 month day! Isn't he darling!! I made that bow tie for him! Actually, I am selling Father-Son bow ties in my Etsy Store, if you are interested! Perfect gift for Father's Day!

30lbs Down 2 Weeks Post Baby

Tomorrow my baby is officially 2 weeks old! Isn't he just perfect!

baby

I am very aware that I need to take it slow getting back into working out, but to be honest....I am so ready!!

I am especially ready to start running again, I can't wait to start training for another half! I am hoping to knock one out in the Fall!!

Anyways, I know I have several more weeks of taking it easy and healing before I can get started in the workout department, but I am happy to share that I am down 30lbs!

I gained about 55lbs while being pregnant, and I haven't been perfect on the eating scale post baby, but I have upped my game and started eating more healthy since having the baby.  That, plus nursing, and the natural losing of baby weight, and I am so excited to be down 30lbs!

Here is a picture of me the day I was headed to the hospital.

baby

And here I am today!

baby

baby

I have been wearing this Belly Bandit off and on since having the baby.  I won it in a Facebook giveaway this past summer, and heard that these type of bands are very helpful on teaching your stomach muscles to go back to normal.  So I have decided to try to wear it as much as possible.  Although I was having some lower back pain the past week and a half, and the strong belt support felt like it caused more pain at times, so I didn't wear it all the time.  I do feel like it helps support me though.  And, the day after in the hospital when I put it on, it barely went around me.  Now I have stretched it to the end of the velcro, so that's a good sign.

baby

Anyways, just thought I would update you all on where I'm at.  & I look forward to sharing my journey to my post baby body with y'all in the next couple of months!!

Weight Loss Wednesday #2

wlw2

Little Sis here.....back for week 2! I have really been enjoying Weightloss Wednesday and my endeavors of Eating Clean!!  You can read about that HERE.  It has made this whole process more fun, enjoyable, and really a fun challenge! Last week I weighed in at 163, and just days before that I was weighing in at 165! UGH!! And today I was proud to see the scales down to 160.5! I'm so ready to be in the 150's! Anyways, though, I did well this week, definitely not perfect, but still making solid changes to my eating habits & lifestyle!

2

It has been fun for me to discover new ways to eat healthy! I went to a Gluten FREE cooking class, not because I want to be Gluten Free, but just to learn healthier ways to cook.  It was fun with my girlfriends (post coming later), and it was very insightful! Along with this, I have been researching and having many conversations on how to eat better.

A few changes I have made so far include using honey to sweeten things, like my COFFEE! Big Deal for me, and I don't taste a difference at all.  (Plus I got the honey from the Farmer's Market).  And also having fun creating new healthy, all-natural snacks for myself! One I shared was the Strawberry-Lemon Protein Pops! Those are fun and so yummy! Next week I'll share about our homemade fruit rollups!  I started juicing this week.  Just started, only have done 3 glasses, and am really enjoying it so far!

Along with these things, I have also been adding protein to a lot  of my foods, (like my juices, or homemade snacks that I make), and I started this whole thing off with a supplement cleanse which ended today.  It did not necessarily affect my eating too much since I was already making changes! I can share more about that if you want later!

There has also been one other thing that has been a HUGE help in rebutting Weightloss Wednesday! Big Sis is going to share more about that! But I LOVE IT AND AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF IT!

Be sure to follow along by searching #theSuellsEatClean

Big Sis here.. This has been a great week! I didn't eat perfect at all and honestly just started working out again yesterday. I set a goal for myself to work out at least 30 minutes this week M-F. Monday and Tuesday are complete! Today I got the all clear at my 6 weeks, postpartum appointment so I am more than ready to get my hiney into running again!! I was so excited to step on the scale and see 191.0!! I was 196.1 last week! So exciting!

The biggest thing that has happened this week is that we have launched our Weight Loss Wednesday Team! We have a group of 15 girls who have come together and joined together in a private forum setting and we are sharing it all. It has really taken off this week and it is so exciting to have that encouragement. Some have shared pictures, weights, goals, etc. It has been a very active group so far and we are so excited for everyone that has been involved. We hope in a both six months to launch another WLW Team! We are so excited to see the changes that are going to come from our team!! We asked our members what there goals are in being part of the team and these are some things that we heard:

" "Friendly accountability" that one thing that is great about this group. We help each other by knowing we are accountable every week to each other. We will all be each others cheerleader or a shoulder when we need it. We're all in this together and as females young & uh~um not so young we all know how each other is feeling! Thanks girls!!" -Kendra

"I needed someone to hold me accountable! All day today I thought... well I could eat that but then I would have to explain to the ladies what happened. So I didn't  where as last week I probably would have. That's so awesome! I'm glad I have this support to get me through. "support group" or "support of the group" lol" -Katie

We are so excited to share with you each week as we progress comments, guest blogs, weight loss struggles, adventures, recipes, etc. from our group! We hope that you will enjoy watching us from the outside as much as we love being together on the inside!

Don't forget to follow my family as we begin our Clean Eating Journey... we won't really get started too much until we get settled in Florida. This is the last post to you from MY living in Texas! :(
