sugar free

Yall, since I gave up sugar in 2015, I. HAVE. NOT. EATEN. A. POPTART!!

Yes, you read that correctly! And as a recovering picky eater who grew up in the 90’s eating frozen pizzas, little debbies, and yes, poptarts, I won’t lie, at times a toasted Brown Cinnamon Poptart has sounded amazing!

It’s been on my list for a while to try making a clean version, but honestly I felt like it was too much work…but finally I gave in and did it, and there were NO REGRETS!

  1. not that much work

  2. the taste was TOTALLY worth it!

Here’s what I did!

(makes 6 poptarts)

Paleo Cinnamon Poptarts

  • ⅔ cup cassava flour plus more for dusting

  • ½ cup almond flour

  • 1 teaspoon xanthan gum

  • ¼ cup coconut sugar

  • ¼ cup coconut oil

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

  • 1 egg white

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • *Wisk together

  • 6 tablespoons coconut sugar

  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil

  • 3 tablesppons coconut oil (not melted)

  • 1 tablesppons coconut sugar

  • 2 teasppons cinnamon

For Crust:

  1. Using a food processor, add in the flours, xanthan gum and coconut sugar, blend together.

  2. Then add in the coconut oil, eggs and syrup.

  3. Blend all together for 2 minutes. The dough will get a bit thicker.

  4. Remove dough from food processor and wrap tightly in plastic wrap; chill in fridge for one hour.

  5. Use some flour to dust a surface, and roll the dough out on it into a sheet that is 12"x 12"

  6. Use a pizza cutter, and cut 12 small rectangles, that are about 4" x 3" each.

Putting them together:

  1. Preheat oven to 350℉.

  2. Place half of the rectangles you’ve rolled out on a parchment lined cookie sheet.

  3. Spoon 1 tablespoon of filling in the center and spread around leaving a ½ inch border around the filling.

  4. Mix up the egg white wash, and brush a small amount of egg wash on the border where there is no filling.

  5. Using another, empty rectangle cover the filling. Pinch the sides together and brush with egg wash to get a good seal. (if they aren’t sealed, some of the good filling will leak out! Go over it again with the tip of a fork along the four sides of the Pop Tart.

  6. Repeat until all 6 Pop Tarts are filled and sealed.

  7. Brush the egg wash over the tops of all 6 poptarts

  8. Bake for 20 minutes.

  9. Let them cool for about 20-30minutes, and mix up the topping, then add it to the top

  1. Mix unmelted coconut oil, cinnamon and coconut sugar together to create a paste

  2. It’s best to put this on after the poptarts have had a chance to cool some so it doesn’t slide off….BUT, if you can’t wait, just go for it and enjoy! (that’s what I did, and how it’s pictured)

ENJOY! And remember if you make them to share pictures and tag me @BrittanySuell

FYI: I hope you enjoy these as much as we did! Don’t be intimidated by the instructions, it actually wasn’t too hard to make, and was so worth it! Also, I’m working on a better, creamier topping, so stay tuned, but for now, ENJOY!

Girl Scout TAGALONG Cookies [the Healthy Kind}

That's right you guys....I straight up did it again!

Last year I made some bomb, sugar free, gluten free Samoa Girl Scout can snag that recipe HERE!

And this year I just had to try another recipe, and Oh my word these cookies are amazing! Very simple to make, incredibly tasty, and gives you all the Girl Scout feels without all of the junk or added sugar! Plus with a little hidden gem in them!

What could be hidden under all of this goodness you ask....??

I used the Collagen Hydrolysate from Great Lakes Gelatin, which is perfect for baking because it dissolves in water, and doesn't have to alternate any of the other ingredients. I love adding this stuff to just about anything I bake so that I make it healthier, and with so many added benefits.

Here's a few of the benefits you AND THE KIDS can get from using Collagen in your treats!

  • Amazing for your hair, nail, and especially your SKIN! And as a newly 30 year old mama of 2, I'm all about keeping my skin looking nice and young! Can I get a "Yes & Amen" from my other mamas out there?!?!
  • For kiddos, it allows you to give them extra protein in their diet. Which who doesn't need a snack or treat that's extra filling for your kiddo! Maybe then you can get a bigger gap between their next moment of begging for more food!
  • These days we need all of the HEALTHY GUT foods we can get. And starting your kiddos out with a healthy gut as early as possible is so helpful for their long term health. Collagen/Gelatin helps to increase gastric acid secretion in the gut and also helps to restore a healthy mucosal lining in the stomach. What does this do you ask? Well it helps keep the cells in the tummy healthy, which could help them avoid Leaky Gut which so many American's have these days, due to what we are eating.
  • It's great for your bones and joints! Which for kiddos is awesome as they are growing, but even for adults this is helpful! How many people are walking around in pain from inflammation in the joints!?!? The amino acids in Collagen help to keep your cartilage and joints healthy, plus studies have even shown that gelatin can reduce the inflammation associated with arthritis.

TAGALONG Girl Scout Cookie Copy cat recipe! NO SUGAR, plus packed with Collagen!

TAGALONG [Sugar Free] Girl Scout Cookies

  • 1/2 cup grass fed butter softened

  • 1/4 cup monkfruit

  • 1/4 cup Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate (GLGLife20 for 20% off)

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 tsp pink Himilayan Sea Salt
  • 1 tbsp almond milk
  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all natural peanut butter
  • 2-3 teaspoons coconut oil
  • 1 pack [Sugar Free] Chocolate Chips

  • Preheat the oven to 350, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper

  • In a mixer, cream together the butter and monk fruit. Once creamed together, add in the Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate

  • Add in flour and salt, and mix. Then add the almond milk and vinalla until blended

  • Taking a piece of parchment paper, put all of the dough inside of it, creating a long, 2" round log. (mine went the entire width of the parchment paper, about 1.5ft long, and 2" thick) Keep it in the  parchment paper and freeze for 15-20minutes

  • Take the log out and cut it into 1/4" thick circles (mine made about 33 cookies). Bake for 12-15minutes, then cool on a rack

  • Mix together the peanut butter and coconut oil, microwave for 15-30 seconds. (If you have a peanut butter that is already creamy/runny, SKIP THIS PART, and don't add the coconut oil. **Feel free to add another 1/4 cup of Collagen to the peanut butter as well here**

  • Place a 1/4" thick amount of peanut butter on top of the cookie, smashing it down so that it fills the entire top of the cookie. Freeze for about 10 minutes

  • Melt the chocolate chips in a bowl in the microwave. Cooking for only 15-30 seconds at a time and stirring to make sure they don't burn. Dip the cookies in the chocolate and freeze until the chocolate sets!

DISCLAIMER: I received this product free for my honest opinion and use of it through my partnership with Fit Approach. All opinions are my own.

Alright you guys...for the past 2 Christmases I have made the most amazing, and perfect cinnamon rolls! And I have yet to share the recipe with you, so I was about time!

[Sugar Free] Classic Cinnamon Rolls = Perfection!

Yall...I am literally coming up on 3 FREAKIN' YEARS of NO SUGAR!!??

What!?!? How is this even real life!???

But did you know that growing up, CINNAMON ROLLS were my jam!?!? Like every single weekend, like clock work, we busted open a can of the big 'ol Pilsbury ones, smothered in icing, and enjoyed!

So to make these is such a treat for me! And they can be for you and your family too!

The perfect CINNAMON ROLLS---Sugar Free!!!

  • 4.5 tsp yeast, dissolved in 1 cup of warm water

  • 6 TBSP grass fed butter or coconut oil (I've used both)
  • 1 cup monkfruit
  • 8 cups organic, all-purpose flour (if the dough is too sticky, you might end up adding more, up to 9-10 cups)
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 egg, beaten
  • 1 TBSP salt
  • 1/2 cup soft grass fed butter or coconut (both work great!)
  • 1.5 cups coconut sugar
  • 2 TBSP cinnamon

  1. Add yeast to a cup of lukewarm water, sprinkle about a tsp of honey in it. Stir, and set aside for about 5 minuts.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, add butter, monkfruit, and salt to hot water and beat for 30 seconds, using the beater blade. Let the temp of the hot mixture cool for a few minutes. Stir in 2 cups of flour and mix until smooth. Add yeast mixture and mix until well combined. Then mix in the beaten eggs.
  3. Gradually stir in the remaining flour and mix with the dough hook for about 2 minutes. Or until the dough begins to pull away from the side of the bowl. Remove dough from the bowl and place on a lightly floured counter. Kned by hand, adding a little flour if the dough feels sticky. Knead until dough feels satiny and smooth.
  4. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  5. After dough has doubled in size, remove it from the bowl and divide it in half. With a rolling pin, roll one half of the dough into a rectangular shape, about 22 x 13 inches. Spread dough evenly with half of the butter or coconut oil. Mix in a bowl, the coconut sugar and cinnamon. Split in half and spread half on top of the butter. Feel free to add raisins or nuts at this time too.
  6. Roll up the dough in to one long roll. Cut rolls, with a bread knife, about 2 inches thick. (I made about 12 rolls for this half, 24 total with the recipe). Place rolls in a greased 9x13 baking pan. Follow the same directions for the other half of dough.
  7. ****If freezing, put in the freezer now. Then, when you are ready to cook them, set them out and let them rise for several hours. I usually set mine into the fridge overnight before the morning of baking.
  8. Let the rolls rise until double in bulk.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until cinnamon rolls are golden brown on top and cooked in the middle.

TOPPING: (2 options)

  • I topped ours with the [sugar free] Caramel Sauce from my Simply Sugar Free Cookbook! It was amazing, plus I also enjoyed it topping my morning coffee too, which is such a treat!
  • Or, mix together pure maple syrup, coconut oil, and cinnamon, melted and pour over the top! I do about 4 TBSP maple syrup, 1-2 TBSP coconut oil, and a tsp of cinnamon for waffles, so quadruple that and add more if you need to.

DON'T FORGET, I LOVE TO SEE PICS OF YOU ENJOYING MY RECIPES! Snap a pic, post it, tag me @BrittanySuell & @SimplySugarFreeCookbook, and ENJOY!

The Quickest Ginger Cookies You Will Ever Make!

So... we made a gingerbread house tonight! And no, not the crazy vegetable one that's floating around social media! Although that's pretty cool looking, we had a normal, ol' store bought, SUGARY, extremely fake gingerbread house! haha

A Gingerbread house, in a sugar free home!

So here's how it went down. [Let me preface for anyone that's new around here, this January I will have been sugar free for 3 years! NO REFINED SUGAR IN MY HOME, or for my kiddos, so there's that....]

My son has been asking to make one since we've been seeing them around the store, and since his Mimi was visiting we decided this was a great time for it. So we got it, and I already thought...if he asks, I'll give him like 1-2 pieces of candy. (I let him have some sugar at my discretion....ex: they give kids 1 piece of candy after gymnastics...I don't love it, but I don't take it away either)

So...we get started, and there's no word of wanting candy. To him, it's just decorations, which makes sense, since literally he's never eaten any of those candies before.

My 1 year old wanted up to the table a licked a piece once or twice.

So I'm thinking..."WOW, this is amazing! #MomWin !!!!!!"

Then as soon as we finish, he says..."CAN WE EAT IT NOW!????" So excitedly.....hahahahaha

Guess we weren't doing as well as I thought. I immediately followed that with. "No, [calmly] but we can make some of our own ginger cookies! And we can make them into designs too!"

So that's exactly what we did, and these cookies that I've been making all the time, turned out amazing, even rolled out and using cookie cutters on!

Also, did I mention, they are the quickest ginger cookies you will ever make! PLUS GLUTEN, EGG, DAIRY, SUGAR FREE!!! What!?!?!

GINGER COOKIE- Gluten, Dairy, Egg, Sugar FREE! & So easy!
They were a hit with everyone!

They were a hit with everyone!

  • 2 cups almond flour
  • 1/4 cup MOM FUEL Plant & Collagen Protein Powder (vanilla)
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Put all ingredients into a mixture and mix until combined
  • Put mixture between two pieces of parchment paper and roll out
  • Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut
  • Bake 8-10minutes

*You can also roll into 1-1.5 inch balls and then flatten them out with a fork (kind of like you do with peanut butter cookies! I do this on a normal basis, this time we just made them special!

This is how the regular ones come out!

Pumpkin Cheesecake!

It's Thanksgiving week, and I don't know about you guys, but that means LOTS OF FOOD, and an espcially large amount of desserts with our family!

So my favorite way to beat the Holiday Deprevation Blues...aka feeling like you are "doing without" because you are eating healthy, or on a to bring my own dessert!

I love to take holiday favorites and make them healthier, and SUGAR FREE! I've got so many recipes like this in my SIMPLY SUGAR FREE COOKBOOK, which is ON SALE now! And that's what I did with this Thanksgiving, PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE that's amazing!

Sugar Free Pumpkin cheesecake!

So I can come out of next week's holiday festivities feeling confident and proud that I didn't wreck all my efforts with one meal and leftovers!

Seriously, when I gave up refined sugar almost 3 years ago, I remember the best feeling of accomplishment I had was after our first holiday weekend....It was 4th of July, and we had attended a huge party! So much food, and an entire dining room devoted to DESSERTS! So much dessert!

I came home from that event, not feeling bloated, regretful, or guilty! I felt proud! I didn't step on the scale on Monday and say all these negative things to myself! The scale didn't jump up 5 lbs! Yes, I may have eaten some junk food [chips, hot dogs...], but no sugar! And it didn't affect my waistline or weight!

I easily jumped right back into my working out and healthy eating routine! IT'S ALL ABOUT BALANCE, and this is one of my favorite ways to keep my balance!

So here's to a well balanced, and delicious THANKSGIVING Meal!

MAKE IT, TAKE A PIC, EAT IT! Then POST YOUR PIC AND TAG ME NEXT WEEK! @BrittanySuell @SimplySugarFreeCookbook

Pumpkin Cheese Cake

(Source: + Simply Sugar Free Cookbook)

  • 16 ounces cream cheese
  • ½ cup plain Greek Yogurt
  • ½ cup organic stevia or monk fruit
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup organic pumpkin puree

  • 1 ½ cups almond flour
  • ½ cup Collagen (I used the Mom Fuel Vanilla Collagen. If you don’t have this, you can just add another ½ cup of almond flour)
  • ½ cup chopped almonds
  • ½ cup melted coconut oil
  • 4 TBSP pure maple syrup
  • 1 TBSP cinnamon
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • Pinch of salt

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Use mixer to combine cream cheese, Greek Yogurt, stevia, vanilla, and eggs. LEAVE PUMPKIN ASIDE
  • While the cream is mixing, use medium size bowl and a spatula to combine the almond flour, collagen, almonds, coconut oil, maple syrup, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and salt for crust
  • Rub coconut oil into cupcake pan or a cheesecake spring pan. (if doing cupcake size, this will make 12-16 cupcakes)
  • Evenly divide the almond mixture into the pans or pan, and use your fingers to flatten the crust into the bottom
  • Set aside ¼ of the cream mixture
  • Using the remaining ¾ evenly divide it into the pan, leaving a ¼ amount of room on top
  • Take the remaining ¼ of cream that you set aside, and combine the pumpkin puree. Once combined, add it to the top of the cupcakes or pan. If doing a pan, drop it into dollops around the top, then take a butter knife and swirl it in for a fun swirl cheesecake
  • Bake for 20 minutes
  • Let cool on counter top for 20 minutes, then refrigerate for 1 hour before serving.

A mom friend tagged me on Facebook today sharing that her daughter asked what it means to "Fuel Your Body," which is a phrase I use often, and used several times in my news segment. I want to encourage you mamas... use that phrase to help to educate your children on the benefits of good food. It's so important for us as parents to talk to our children about good and bad foods. To talk to them about a healthy balance. To show them how to pick healthy foods, and WHY we choose healthy foods.

Not sure how to talk to your kids about this without being an extremist, here are a few kid friendly ways I do it.

  1. First and foremost...SET THE EXAMPLE! They do what you do! And like I always say...EXPOSURE EQUALS PREFERENCE!
  2. Talk to them about foods that God gave us! Think whole foods, that are natural and good for us. Discuss having a balance, and leaning towards more God foods...veggies, nuts, fruits, meats, etc. and then keeping a smaller amount of Man foods available! Demonstrate this in your own food choices as well.
  3. Give your children a VISION of why we should care about eating healthy or "fueling our body," and why we should care about exercise. I always tell my kids..."We love to exercise because God gave us this body, and we want to take care of it so that we can live our happiest, fullest life living for God." (even though my kids don't fully grasp this meaning yet, I consistently repeat it to them, and one day they will understand)

You got this mamas! Remember, even small changes go a long way! Don't feel overwhelmed! And PLEASE, reach out if you need help or have questions!

All the mom love, XOXO

Roasted Grapefruit SPLASH

It's 4th of July weekend, which usually means....lots of fun in the sun with family! And when you are out in hot weather, a cold, fruity drink can usually make you feel incredible! Throw some gin in the drink....and well, you will feel that much better!

So, in honor of a fun and celebratory weekend, I created an amazing cocktail recipe for you guys!

First off though, let's just talk about why this Grapefruit Splash is the perfect drink for this time of year!

For starters, grapefruit is in season right now, and the benefits of eating in season foods, (see an entire list of summer fruits & veggies here), are huge!

Benefits of eating in season fruits

  • It's cheaper
  • Tastes Better
  • Fresher & with Higher Nutritional Value
  • Avoids Contaminates and GMO's
  • Supports the bodies natural nutritional needs
  • More environmentally friendly

Secondly, Grapefruit is full of nutritional value, and what better way to enjoy it than in a cocktail!?!

Benefits of Grapefruit:

  • Weightloss
  • Increases Heart Health
  • Fights off High Blood Pressure and Cancer
  • Benefits the digestive system
  • Is good for the skin
  • Is Hydrating

So if you haven't been enjoying grapefruit this time of year, this ROASTED GRAPEFRUIT SPLASH is the perfect way to start!

Roasted Grapefruit SPLASH

  • 2 large grapefruits
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • + enough syrup to drizzle on grapefruits
  • Gin
  • Lemon LaCroix

  1. Turn oven on broil. Cut the grapefruits in half, (cut a slice or two for garnishing as well) and lay cut side up on a baking pan. Drizzle tops with pure maple syrup. Broil for 7 minutes.
  2. Heat up water and maple syrup either in a small saucepan, or in a microwave. Stir thoroughly.
  3. Once the grapefruit is done, take the juice of the grapefruit (I use a small handheld juicer to get the juice from it), and combine that with the simple syrup (water+maple syrup). Refrigerate until cooled.
  4. In cup, fill with ice. Add 1 shot of gin. (or 2 if you are feeling it), plus 2 shots of grapefruit mixture, then top it off with the Lemon LaCroix. (feel free to try other flavors of LaCroix with it as well!)

As always, make the recipe, snap a photo, share it, and tag me! @Brittanysuell #simplysugarfree

EASY to make, EASY to eat! Sugar Free BAGEL RECIPE!

image1 (14).JPG

So...I didn't eat bagels until late in life. Sometime in my mid-20's I found Einstein Bagel's Cinnamon Sugar Bagel with the honey nut cream cheese! And as a lover of cinnamon toast, I naturally fell in love with this bagel.

However, I only had it on occasion since there was no Einstein's in my town. Then...when I went sugar free in 2015, it was nearly impossible to find any bagels made without sugar.

I personally tried numerous recipes, and not only were they all very time consuming and straight up just hard to make, but they never really turned out very well...sadly.

Finally... 2.5 years later, I have developed the PERFECT recipe! And if you didn't know, most bagels are made after mixing, rolling dough, cutting dough, boiling, then FINALLY baking dough! WOW....I told you it was hard!

This recipe though is so easy! Just snag up a donut pan, mix the ingredients, bake them and ENJOY!

OH...don't forget to snap a pic and share it with me! #SimplySugarFree @brittanysuell @simplysugarfreecookbook

By the way, if you haven't snagged your copy of my cookbook yet, now is your chance! GO HERE TO ORDER ONE

Cookie Cake!!!! Gluten & Sugar Free!

That's all time favorite for sure!

A cookie cake made with no gluten, sugar, or dairy! What more could you ask for?!?

Well I guess you could ask for it to taste good....and let me tell you, this one definitely does!

When I gave up sugar in 2015, it was about 2 years in before I found a cookie recipe that actually felt like a cookie. I know that sounds weird, but many of the cookies I tried making just didn't FEEL like the texture of a cookie. Finally I found one though, and loved it! I never dreamed though that I would EVER be able to create a Cookie CAKE!

And not only do I...the sugar free girl LOVE IT! But I had it tested by many sugar intakers over the weekend at my son's 3rd birthday and they also loved it!

I made two of the Chocolate Chip Cookie Cakes with Eggland's Best Eggs, and stacked them on top of each other. Using the Chocolate Avocado Icing from my Simply Sugar Free Cookbook. Then of course I had to decorate it so that my 3 year old would go nuts over it! The cake fit the construction party theme!

Another thing I love about this cake is that it's Gluten Free. I don't always bake things gluten free, but this year one of my goals has been to create more gluten free recipes, and this one is a major winner.

Plus with the use of Eggland's Best Eggs, which are naturally gluten-free, and contain highly functional proteins, this cake adds essential nutrients that our bodies need. So if you are trying out some gluten free baking, Eggland's Best Eggs are ideal to use with gluten free flours to help them bind together since the gluten is being left out.

This recipe is so easy to make, and is really, simply GUILT FREE! Usually I make one, and it's easily gone by the next day! My entire family loves it, even without the yummy icing and cute decorations!

  • 2 Eggland's Best Egg
  • 3 TBSP pure maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter (no sugar added)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • pinch salt
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar free chocolate chips

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  • In a large bowl use a whisk to scramble the Eggland's Best Eggs, add in maple syrup, coconut oil, peanut butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  • Use a rubber spatula and add in baking soda, cinnamon, salt, and almond flour. Mix thoroughly.
  • Add the chocolate chips.
  • In a pie pan, or 8 inch cake pan, use coconut to grease the pan.
  • Add the cookie mixture to the pan and bake for 17-20 minutes
  • Turn the oven to broil for about 1 minute to brown the top
  • ENJOY!

Alternatives to Halloween Candy

So here's the deal....the time is upon us. The time in America where we have back-to-back-to-back holidays that are surrounded with candy, food, and desserts.

So how the heck do you make it when you are living sugar free!?!??

Let's start by talking about the hard part. Honestly, to truly make it successfully through the holidays. For you, and your family (especially kids), you really have to reshape the American holiday. It's hard, it takes work, but YOUR HEALTH, and THE HEALTH OF YOUR CHILDREN ARE WORTH IT!

Let's start with the most prevalent one that is a mere 11 days away.

To truly make Halloween possible, it starts with you. What alternative to candy can you give to other kids. How can you make small changes that will gradually turn into big changes, and that may not only change your family's Halloween, but others too.

I took some time in the Target Dollar Spot and found some fun ideas to use instead of candy:

Now I know what you are thinking...."But Brittany, do you know how many pieces of candy I hand out at my door each year. There are hundreds of kids that come trick-or-treating at my house. I can't afford to buy these treats for all the kids."

And here's what I say to that. Remember above how I said we have to "reshape the American holiday." This is where it gets hard. But truly, why do kids need hundreds of pieces of candy? Why do holidays have to look like they always have. Can't you change up the way you do it without ruining tradition.

Here are some ideas on how to RESHAPE the holiday and do it different:

  • Attend a local trunk-or-treat, or church event where your kid gets only a small amount of candy vs. the hundreds of pieces they get trick-or-treating
  • Challenge the people you do Halloween with to all change it up: church group, friends, neighborhood. Do some of these treats I suggested above or do fun games outside your house instead of candy
  • Volunteer to help plan the trunk-or-treat. Make it a point system where the kids get tickets at each game station and trade it in for fun (cheap) prizes vs. candy
  • Host your own Halloween party and make healthy yet, good food for everyone! Need ideas, grab your pre-sale order of my SIMPLY SUGAR FREE COOKBOOK
  • Don't feel like you need to take your kids to EVERY SINGLE Halloween event. Just take them to one and let them have a little candy
  • Finally, if you have no control over some of these things, don't fret. Just limit what you do, and make changes in your own home and what you are handing out, and pray that it will trickle down to other parents. Because most likely, you are not the only parents that dread ALL THE CANDY!

What changes have you made to make holidays less sugary? I would love to hear them!

Why drinks are the hardest when giving up sugar

So here's the deal...people love their drinks!

Whether it's a latte in the morning, Diet Coke after lunch, or sweet tea at dinner. When it comes to giving up sugar, people struggle the most with letting go of their favorite sugary drinks.

The truth is though, this can be a dangerous thing to hang on to, and can actually contribute to a lot of the sugar we intake on a daily basis. Have you ever wondered why you can drink a Rte. 44 Sonic Drink without getting full. Or at restaurants, you can usually drink 2-5 coke's in one setting without it affecting how full you get. This is because the sugar in soda's doesn't trigger or register with your brain that you are full. So you are drinking all of these calories, without feeling full. This is a dangerous place to be.

Now...if you are thinking..."Well I drink DIET SODAS." Well think again. The artificial sweeteners that are used in diet sodas trick your taste buds into craving sweet things instead of feeling satisfied with the natural sweetness of something like blueberries.

A study at the University of Texas made some shocking discoveries. Researchers found people who drink just one diet soda were 65% more likely to be overweight, that two or more diet sodas raised your odds of becoming obese, and – are you ready for this – people who drank diet soda had a greater chance of becoming overweight than regular soda drinkers. -JJ Virgin

So as I aim to get my husband closer to being fully sugar free, I have found a lot of ways to get flavor, and even some ways to get the fizzle of the carbonation in drinks for him.

Here are some of my favorite Sugar Free Drinks:

1) Fruit Infused Water--or my favorite lately is just lemon water!

2) La Croix--these waters come in all different flavors, plus you get the fizz, and you can drink from a can. (if that's important to you)

3) Unsweetened flavored teas--our favorite is passion tea. We make a large pitcher, put it in the fridge, and add lemon to it.

4) La Croix + Silver Fern Brand Wai Drink Mixes--I mix a plain La Croix sparkling water with the Wai drink mix of my choice, and it has plenty of flavor and sweetness. (they are sweetened with monk fruit and stevia)

5) Silver Fern Brand Wai Drink Mixes--these things are so easy to have on the go, and they come in lots of flavors! My husband loves them, and is able to take them on the go to work with him. Or we take them when we travel. Not to mention they are pre- and pro-biotics, so they are super healthy for you and support your body in so many ways !

Amazing Peanut Butter-Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

You heard right! I have created an AMAZING Peanut Butter-Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Recipe that is perfect for this summer. What's better, is that it's full of nutrients!

I live in Texas...which means summer time is hot! So I'm always looking for fun, tasty recipes to help cool us off after being outside or after killing a great workout! And I love when I can add extra nutrients into the cold treat, so that when I enjoy it post workout, I'm fueling and hydrating my body as well.

That's exactly what this tasty recipe does!

It's made with two amazing ingredients....coconut cream, and Amazing Grass Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Superfoods (plant based).

To start...did you know that coconut cream which comes from cold coconut milk is full of goodness.

It's made with the good fatty-acids, which means they are the fat burning kind...which obviously we want! Plus it helps boost our immunity, and hydrates our body. Which post workout, hydration is great! It has a good amount of sodium and potassium, which are key ingredients in electrolyte drinks!

Then there's the tasty Amazing Grass Chocolate-Peanut Butter Protein Superfoods added to it! This adds tons of flavor and even more nutritious ingredients! One serving is 20 grams of protein, and two-full servings of fruits and veggies! So hello....that's awesome! Especially when the kiddos want some!
