The West Texas Half Marathon--Plus 4 Awesome Perks of Having a Running Partner

Well first let me start off by saying I had a CRAZY weekend!  It started off great, and on Saturday morning I hosted my first ever Healthy Eating Freezer Meal Workshop! (I'll be sharing all the fun details about that tomorrow, and how you can take part, whether you are local or long distance). It was so much fun and all around successful! Then after spending some time at the pool with my friends, I started having random stomach aches/cramping! I tried to push through the pain and go out with my son and husband, but the pain continued to intensify. I ended up in the ER from 7PM to 2AM (not fun), and found out it was some issues with my colon. UGH...sick, maybe TMI! But anyways, the last few days I have been recovering, and resting up!

Now....on to why we are really here.....The West Texas Half Marathon!

The West Texas Half Marathon! Training with running partners, plus a coupon code!

That's right people! I'm back at it! I'm signed up for the West Texas Half Marathon in October, and this time I'm doing it different......what does that mean you wonder?? I'm training with running partners!

[bctt tweet="Do you run alone? This might convince you that you need a running partner! Post from @brittanysuell" via="no"]

After running my half marathon in April, I took several weeks off, except for a few short 2 milers here and there, and the sprints I run at Stroller Strides. Three weeks ago though I signed up for the West Texas Half Marathon which is in October, and I started running with two of my friends.

Since starting to run together, we have run 5 days a week, and are starting with just 1 mile runs. Since they are just starting, and I went a month without really running, we wanted to start with a strong base. SIDENOTE: I definitely suggest this for anyone who is wanting to start running and adding distance. Get a good mile or 2 mile time under your belt. And get to where that is easy, where at the end you feel good and you aren't panting for breath. I feel like when you have this, then you are setting yourself up for success to gradually add mileage to your training.

So tomorrow we will begin running two miles. And let me just say, running with partners is very different, but in so many good ways!

4 Awesome Perks of Having a Running Partner

The West Texas Half Marathon! Training with running partners, plus a coupon code!

1) First off, we get to chit-chat while we run! Which is always great! But...we switch off on who is talking so that we have time to catch our breath! And although this is great for now, we have already agreed that when we get somewhere between 3-5miles, then we will probably start listening to our own individual podcasts while we run. For the time being though, I'm enjoying a little extra time chatting with friends!

2) It's way harder to back out of a run, or skip a run when you have plans to meet with others. Today is really the only day that one of us has said we are too tired to run. Other than that, we have all helped one another stay motivated and on track with training! We even got up at 7:30AM on a Saturday to run because one of us was going out of town for the day! I'm just telling you, having a running partner kicks your dedication meter up a notch for sure! The West Texas Half Marathon! Training with running partners, plus a coupon code!

3) We encourage each other to be better! For the first time ever when running, I am actually working hard to do better than my past runs. You know that term PR that so many runners talk about. (Personal Record). Well formerly that was not part of my running vocabulary. Honestly I didn't care how fast I ran, just that I was running and finishing. Now to some extent that still is what I'm worried about, but running with partners has helped me to make myself better. The first time we ran (with strollers) we were a high 11minute mile. BUT, we set goals together and have gotten to a 9:45-10 minute mile! That's a good change, and we have decided that our goal for the half is to run right under 10 minute miles! So it adds a different dynamic to your training when you are pushing yourself in a way of being better than your previous time! I like it so far!

4) We get excited together! It is so fun to celebrate little victories like new mileages, and new workout gear! (hey we are girls, we get excited about finding good running shorts that don't ride up, or leggings that feel like you are literally wearing NOTHING! and in this Texas heat, that's saying something). Plus, it is so exciting to think about taking a (short) road trip together and staying the night, eating our pre-race meal together, and crossing the finish line at a half marathon, celebrating together! No matter who you are with at a half marathon, even by yourself, the celebration is great, but I know it will be even better to celebrate our accomplishments after months of training together! I can't wait for that!

So, if you are anywhere near West Texas, or might want to take a road trip down here to join us, then we would so love that!! Plus, I have a 10% OFF code that you can use to REGISTER for the West Texas Half Marathon!!

TIUX Compression Socks Review & Giveaway

Does Wearing Bright Socks Make Me Run Faster?

I'm not sure if bright socks make you run faster, but if they are tight socks, specifically compression socks, then they will probably make your legs feel better after a long or fast run.

Have you noticed the recent trend of knee high socks at races? or sometimes the socks are crazy designed or bright colors like these!

TIUX Compression Socks Review & Giveaway

Let me tell you though, these socks have more going for them than just being bright, fun, and matching my outfit. (You have to admit they look pretty cute with my bright clothes though!)

These socks are compression socks!

Now I've shared over the past several months about compression sleeves and how great compression gear can be to help recovery from intense workouts or runs, but I have never worn full socks that are compression.

These TIUX Compression Socks are not only fun, but they have more function than you would think.

In the past, compression gear was known for use when flying on long flights or for pilots, and diabetes, to keep the blood flow happening, and to keep you from getting blood clots when sitting for long periods of time on a plane.

Now days, compression gear is a HUGE HIT with runners!

TIUX Compression Socks Review & Giveaway

I remember after running my first half marathon in 2012, we spent the afternoon at an outdoor mall! Ya crazy right! Walking around after running 13.1 miles that morning. And I remember saying, "I wish I had really tight leggings all over my legs. I just feel like that would make them feel better." I said this because my muscles were so flimsy, jello-y, and sore. This was before I knew what compression socks were, and now, they actually have full compression leggings as well.

When you where compression socks while running, before running, or even after running, (or hard intense workouts), studies have shown that they stimulate blood flow and oxygen to muscles, allowing legs to recover faster from a hard run.

So no wonder compression gear has become an essential part of a runner's wardrobe!

Since I have only ever used compression sleeves, it was different having the full sock from TIUX, but I actually really enjoyed it. Now days, you can find most socks (not just for runners), that have some type of compression in them, usually a little band around the arches. So it was nice to have the added compression and stability around my feet. Plus, they have added support around the back part of the ankle, and the socks are a good thickness. Not too thin like you might imagine for compression, but not too thick, so that they are still easily used in the Texas summer that is coming up!

TIUX Compression Socks Review & Giveaway

Also because of their specific way of production, they are able to keep their prices at just $35 for a long compression sock. Which in comparison to many other compression gear companies, is a GREAT PRICE! Very affordable if you are interested in trying compression out for the first time!

So I will definitely be wearing these throughout the summer as I train for my October Half Marathon (more to come on this next week!)

Top 5 Hits on my Summer Workout Playlist PLUS My Favorite Yoga Playlist!

It may be raining in Texas, but I believe we can officially call it summertime! And what goes better with summertime than some good ol' country music! HELLO, I'M A TEXAN! Just imagine it though, an afternoon at the pool, a cold sonic drink in hand, then driving home in your swimsuit and the windows rolled down singing your heart out to some good country music! Nothing sings SUMMERTIME like that to my Texas heart.  Today though, I won't be talking all about country music, so don't check out on this blog yet.....because although that scenario sounds great, country music isn't exactly my favorite workout music!

Today I will be sharing my Top 5 Hits on my Summer Workout Playlist (specifically for working out/running), PLUS My Favorite Yoga Playlist! And if you have Spotify or choose to use it, then my playlist will be made available to you!

The Top 5 Hits on my summer workout playlist plus my favorite yoga playlist! #Fridayfive

Okay, as you will see with the Yoga Playlist I am sharing below, I am LOVING Acoustic Covers on Spotify! So a lot of my favorite workout jams these days are acoustic! But don't think necessarily coffee house style, put you to sleep music. They may be classified as acoustic, but still have some spunk to them!

(Click on the song titles to find them on Spotify)

1) Uptown Funk (Live from SXSW 2015) by Cam

-It's an acoustic version, and SO MUCH FUN! A little side note, when I discovered this amazing version of this song, I grabbed my husband on my back porch, and we literally danced to this entire song! This song is great for running, or at Stroller Strides we do an awesome ab workout to this entire song! Definitely a burner!

2) Lips Are Movin by Meghan Trainor

-Seriously, I LOVE THIS SONG! And it's so much fun to workout to! It really puts an extra pep in your step, or a pep in your rep! (haha see what I did there) Especially when you are getting tired during a workout! And it's so much fun to sing to!

3) Want To Want Me by Jason Derulo

-Also such a fun and upbeat one for working out!

4) How Can It Be by Lauren Daigle

-Now I know most people love to workout to fast, upbeat tempo'd music, but that's not always the case for me. Even before I became a Yoga Instructor, I always enjoyed running to slow, inspirational or worship music. So I absolutely love this song and had to include it!

5) Rascal Flatts -All of it!

-So in the spirit of it being summer and me being a Texan, I had to include a little country music...and my favorite is Rascal Flatts! I love them and love to listen to them any time!

[bctt tweet="TOP 5 Hits on Summer Workout Playlist, plus the best Acoustic #Yoga Playlist from @brittanysuell #leaveyourlegacy #fridayfive"]

So when I talked my husband into running a half marathon with me, he said under one condition. That we would get Spotify Premium. It's like $12 or $14 a month, so I was like, "Whatever..." We had intentions to cancel it after the first few months, but then I realized how amazing it is for my Yoga music as well! PLUS, OMG you can follow your friends, and check out their playlists, and share your playlists with people!

So I created the most amazing Yoga Playlist....too bad I didn't name it something fun (and now don't know how to change the name). But basically it's acoustic versions of in songs, and perfect for Yoga. It's also my go-to playlist when I'm hanging out, cleaning, or studying for my ACE exam!

The Top 5 Hits on my summer workout playlist plus my favorite yoga playlist! #Fridayfive

So check it out! Just click HERE to get the playlist!  It's amazing, and FOLLOW ME (although my Spotify is under my husband's name), and share your awesome playlists with me too!!

Also, I would love for you to share my playlist with others! Click to tweet above, or hover over the image to PIN it!

Today I'm linking up with these awesome ladies for the #FridayFive linkup! Check out the party for more awesome playlist inspiration and get your summer workout music ready to motivate and inspire you to get fit!

My Latest Running Fuel Additions!

Alright! Here I am again, 2 weeks pre-HALF MARATHON!  This time, there is no chance of ice interfering, so if all goes well, I will for sure be running in the Big D Half Marathon in Dallas, TX. on Sunday, April 12th, with my husband! (Is anyone else running this? Let me know!!)

I am officially getting a tad bit jittery! I was running today and had that thought....."Why the heck did I sign up for this again." Even though I ran 10miles last weekend, the thought of running a race, the pressure of completing the 13.1 (although I am fully capable), is a tad scary and overwhelming! I know it will be great though!

Plus, I am so excited to be doing this with my husband!

Now, prior to the February Half Marathon that I ran was supposed to run, I shared about how I was fueling my run! Well, since then, I've added three more items to my list, so I thought in celebrating the upcoming race I would share those with you!

The newest additions to my Running FUEL list! Must-Haves for a successful, nutritious run! via @brittanysuell

1) Water!! Since it has gotten a lot hotter in Texas, I am running with water these days! Today it was in the mid-80's, and I needed my water big time to finish my race. So I will be utilizing my SPI Belt Water Bottle (you can snag one of those HERE in my online store), and/or the stations during this race!

It's Summer, and the SPI Belt Water Bottle is keeping me fueled during these hot runs! via @brittanysuell

2) I have found my newest favorite mid-race fuel!! I picked up a Honey Stinger Waffle at our local Natural Grocers, it was actually a gift for my husband, but I snagged it and tried it out during a 10mile run. WOWza! That thing was amazing! And NO SUGAR! Which is great for me, since I've Cut Sugar in 2015! Plus  they are organic, and my word if I didn't have self-control, I would buy enough to enjoy one a day as my dessert! Yes, they are that good!

Now I've only tried the Gingersnap Flavor, but I'm just telling you, this is the only one I need to try! This made me start brainstorming on how I could make homemade, sugar free gingersnap you never know, I may have a recipe for you coming soon!

My newest mid-run fuel! It tastes like a dessert! Plus it's organic and sugar free! @honeystinger @brittanysuell

3) Compression!

Using @BioSkin Compression to help fuel my half-marathon training! I am loving how it is enhancing my runs! @brittanysuell

I have started using Bio Skin Calf Skin Compression Sleeves to fuel my long runs, and I am loving how it is enhancing training!

Now let me just tell you, if you are looking for something to compress the muscles. Whether to enhance your training, to help with sore or painful muscles (or shin splints), this stuff has some incredible compressing power! I seriously wish I could've videoed the night we first received these. My husband and I both tried one on, and he seriously thought it was stuck on his leg/foot. He does have a size 15 foot though! It was the funniest thing ever...we just laughed and laughed!  Since then though, we have both been training with Bio Skin, and loving it!

Plus the material is incredible. Makes total sense why it is called Bio SKIN...since the material is sleek, and skin-like. And it definitely is not moving, no matter what kind of activity you are doing, so it feels like it's part of you, not like you are wearing some addition.

Even now, with the temperatures increasing, I thought about not wearing them, because it was just adding a layer to me, when I was already sweating. Then I remembered that it's part of the "technology" that Bio Skin is made with, to wick the sweat, and activate a cooling sensation, which it does. Crazy how it works like that! I didn't even notice or feel like my legs were extra hot while running.

Using @BioSkin Compression to help fuel my half-marathon training! I am loving how it is enhancing my runs! @brittanysuell

During my run, the compression seems to hold my calf muscles in, and just makes me feel more stable, secure, and stronger in my legs throughout the run. (Even when I get to where my legs usually feel like jello!)

Post runs, these things feel incredible! I would actually love to wear Bio Skin leggings (no such thing as of now), but covering with compression over your tired, sore muscles feels like you are getting a massage. Well kind of....definitely the next best thing to a sore muscle massage. So check them out HERE!

[bctt tweet="Fuel your training with these MUST-HAVE items from @brittanysuell @BioSkin #fitfluential"]

So, I'm definitely on the right track to a successful race! I'm nervous, excited, have my training (kind of) under control, so here goes nothing!

I also just recently shared MY TOP 5 SECRETS TO A SUCCESSFUL RACE, which are things that I have been implementing throughout my training, and will use during my race!

What is a Mantra?

Have you ever heard of the word Mantra? Is this a word that you commonly use in your vocabulary? or is it extremely foreign to you?

Even if you wonder "What is a Mantra?" It may be a word that you have started to hear.  Lately mantra is something that is being used more frequently.

So what is a Mantra?

Mantra means: a word or sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation.

Although Mantra's originated in Yoga, and are most frequently used there, the use of mantra's is being suggested in other physically demanding activities such as running as well.

In reality, you use an extent of mantra's daily, especially when you work out.

Have you ever been lifting weights and you repeatedly tell yourself you can do it, or you are saying encouraging things to yourself? That is a sort of mantra.

Or you are running, and you tend to use some of the same "inner dialogue" words or phrases to get yourself through the run, or on to the next mile.  That is a type of mantra.

In my opinion, a mantra is a word or phrase we use to encourage ourselves.  So although the original use of the word comes from Buddhism, I feel that we can take the use of mantra's and use them for good to encourage ourselves as we strive to get better or accomplish certain physical activities.

Many times when teaching yoga, I will give a phrase for my class to focus on, and will remind them throughout the class of that phrase.  For example, if the phrase is, "I Am Strong," then when we are holding Warrior Poses, and their muscles are SCREAMING at them, I will remind them of our class phrase.  They take this cue and begin repeating to themselves, "I Am Strong!" This takes their minds focus from their muscles and rejuvenates their body to stay strong in the pose! This is a great use of a Mantra!

I frequently use a Mantra when I am running as well.  Especially these days since it is harder than usual and I am training myself to get my miles back up there.  I will tell myself things like "You Are A Runner!" over and over, reminding myself that I can do this and that I am a runner! This encourages me mentally and physically to continue running and complete the set mileage goal for that day and not stop short.

So what is your favorite Mantra?

I would love to hear what you frequently say to yourself as encouragement when you are working hard!

or, if you don't feel like you have one, just start with this...."I AM..." and finish the sentence.  I frequently use this in my Yoga Classes, so people can learn to say positive things over themselves and remind themselves who they are!

40lbs Down, 1 Month Post Baby

Well my little man is 1 month old already, and I am slowly but surely seeing this weight drop! Actually it's going pretty fast, but that's probably because I gained 65-70lbs during this pregnancy!

That seems so crazy to me, so much weight to gain, but I am officially 40lbs down, and have about 25-30lbs more to lose! And I am quite encouraged with the fact that I haven't even started working out yet, so hopefully once I start working out then I really continue to see the results.1532130_734587969927111_1578367399037048371_n

I have been very aware of what I am eating though, and counting calories using the app My Fitness Pal, (which is awesome by the way! It links with my FitBit so that is a lot of fun, and helpful!) Along with eating well, I have also been going on a lot of walks! Either I go in the evening with my husband, or me and my other mommy friends go together! Both is a lot of fun... I either get good time with my friends, or a nice family outing....I am actually really enjoying walking! Although I am super ready to start running.

Next wednesday will be my 6 weeks mark, so I think I will start doing some light workouts.  I plan to start with the Beach Body T25 workouts, since they are 25minutes, I thought they would be a good starting point.  Along with that I also plan on starting to run.  Slowly but surely I know, but I am excited! I am hoping to run a "Firecracker 4 Miler" on the 4th of July in my hometown.  That is my first running goal, then we will go from there.

And I couldn't give you an update on my weightless progress without showing you a little sneak peek of my adorable man on his 1 month day! Isn't he darling!! I made that bow tie for him! Actually, I am selling Father-Son bow ties in my Etsy Store, if you are interested! Perfect gift for Father's Day!

Also, I wanted to let y'all know I am doing this awesome Twitter Challenge for the next month with Lorna Jane & Fit Approach! It's called #ShareSomethingInspiring, so the entire month we are tweeting and writing about things that inspire us! Obviously the first day I talked about my sweet son, and probably will more, because you all know how important it is to both me and big sis to be healthy for our families! Our big goal is to be healthy and fit and to teach our families to be the same! Anyways, follow along on Twitter and GET INSPIRED!! #SweatPink

I found myself lost in thought this morning about how I would like to pursue running longer runs more frequently.

Then I found myself wondering...when in the heck do I have time to do that.

In my half marathon training I save my long runs for Sundays because I have the most time on Sundays.  Those runs can take up to 1-2 hours depending on the distance, and if I was to ever train for a full marathon, it would be well over 2 hours, getting closer to 3hours forlong runs.  Plus with marathon training, long runs would be more frequently.

I thought about how I may never have time for this, then today I ran across this little piece of encouragement.

This really puts things into perspective for me!
