healthy snack

What to feed your kids!! The ULTIMATE KIDS SNACK!

It's summer, and we still have about a month of it.

Are you at that place where you are DONE, you are ready to STOP making snacks altogether!?!?

It seems that when summer hits, we are constantly just feeding our kids! Can I get an "Amen" from my other mamas out there?!?

So what do you feed your kids?

Many times because of the fast pacedness of our society, we tend to go for ease! We fill up baskets and drawers with pre-packaged snacks, that quite frankly probably fuels their sugar desire (or being more frank, let's call it what it is, their sugar ADDICTION), keeps them satisfied for a moment, then their body starts to want MORE! So they come back asking for more snacks!

The same thing happens with chips, and empty carbs, and things like that. They don't really fuel their body, they just give them some quick energy that will shortly be absorbed, burned off, and their body will want more!

So why not feed our kids something that's going to fuel them and keep them satisfied longer?!!?

  1. Many times, like I said, the fueling snacks take more time to prep. So convenience wins out.
  2. Sometimes it's just that we don't know what to feed them.

I understand. But let me address both of these issues, and stya with me because I've got a snack that's going to blow both YOU and your kids minds!!

So to address #1! You are right! HEALTHY FOOD takes time to prep! Look at the trends of our world! Back in the day, more time was spent in the kitchen, and our society was healthier! Today, barely any time is spent in the kitchen, and our health bills are showing the outcome of that! Not to mention that some of the leading causes of death today are now related to what we are eating! WE'VE GOT TO SPEND SOME TIME IN THE KITCHEN!

Now I'm not saying hours upon hours upon hours. But 1-2 hours a week to prep some meals and/or healthy snacks will save your waistline, your health bills down the road, and potentially YOUR LIFE! It's worth it! YOU ARE WORTH IT! YOUR KIDS ARE WORTH IT!

If you are wondering HOW you can maximize your time, but still make healthy snacks that you AND your kids will love! Join me this week for a "HEALTHY MOM + HEALTHY KIDS BOOTCAMP" It's FREE, 7-days long, and starts on August 2nd!

Ask to join the group HERE!

So let's address #2.

I just don't know WHAT to feed my kids!

Or maybe you just need more variety from the same 'ol thing you've been making!

I get that for sure!

And I can tell you, my bootcamp (you can join above) is FREE, and you will get so many recipes that you AND the kids will love! Plus these recipes are made to keep you FULL and FUEL your body so you aren't wanting MORE in 5 minutes!

But if you are are looking for a snack to make NOW! I've got you covered!

What makes these so great!?

These are our favorite go-to afternoon snack, and not only are they delicious, but they are full of healthy goodness. Just a few simple ingredients, and you are getting good healthy fats and proteins to keep you satisfied longer! Plus the kids love to help make these, and they are easy to pack up to take to the park, or put in school lunches!

All you need is:

  • 1 apple
  • 4 TBSP nut butter
  • toppings: shredded coconut, raw cacao nibs, seeds, nuts, chia seeds, cinnamon.

Try it out and let me know what you and your kids think!

What is your favorite HEALTHY SNACK that both you and your kids LOVE!?!?

3 Must-Haves for a Happy & Healthy Vacation

So there's this theory out there that hasn't really been solved. People, even experts have their opinions, but no one has said which is the end all be all when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. The theory....MODERATION!  When it comes to living healthy, eating healthy, does the common term, "Do everything in moderation" really apply. I have read that yes, you should have a cheat day or meal. Then I have read that ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Being that I am sugar free, and know that sugar is addictive, when it comes to healthy eating, I lean more towards the strict healthy lifestyle, no cheat days, and moderation is not good.

Now I will say that I do eat sweets, but they are healthy and sugar free! To me that is learning to live a healthy lifestyle. Feeding the sweet tooth with healthy foods rather than sugary, fattening foods! I have an entire list of SUGAR-FREE HEALTHY, Sweet Recipes here! Try them out! They will feed that sweet tooth, but you aren't "cheating."

I have a similar theory when it comes to vacationing! I LOVE traveling and taking vacations! But since really jumping in to a healthy and active lifestyle, just as much as travel is one of my personal and family values, so is being active. So even on vacation, I find sugar free treats to enjoy, I eat well, and I workout and/or do active things. It's not as a chore either, it's because I LOVE IT and it's become my lifestyle. In the past I shared ways to making working out on vacation fun, HERE, and ways to make eating healthy on vacation easier, HERE

Today, I'm sharing 3 Must-Haves for a Happy & Healthy Vacation!

Since my husband and I are headed out on our first post-baby (he's 16months old) vacation together next week, this is at the forefront of my mind!

These are personal things that I think will make your vacation more fun, while also staying healthy! 3 Must-Haves for a Happy & Healthy Vacation with Brittany Suell

2. A Good Pair of Pants

I absolutely love the color and fit of these Prana Meme pants from their Fall Zion Collection. You can also take advantage of a discount from Prana by using code: LiveInPrana15 for 15% off through September 30th!

These pants are going to be awesome for days when we are flying by the seat of our pants. Going out on adventures! They will be comfy for walking around town, or hanging at a coffee shop, while also working perfect if we decide to go for a hike or bike ride!  Since all of our activities are surprises being planned by my husband, I want to be prepared and these pants are sure to help me do that!

3. Workout Plans

The best thing about vacations. (well maybe not the best, but as far as fitness and working out) You can try new workouts that might not be offered in your town. You can take classes from different instructors. You can try out various gyms, etc. Or even if you don't want to go to a specific class, why not look up fun, active things to do on your vacation! Where you will be having SO MUCH FUN you will forget you are actually working out!

I love to take Yoga classes in new towns, and get different instructors perspectives. I love working out or running in new outdoor areas, and with my husband. I love going paddle boarding, or maybe taking a Barre class, which aren't things that are offered in my city. So plan those things! Make them a fun activity you do on vacation!

I know we will for sure go paddle boarding, hiking, and maybe rent bikes! These are all easy and fun things that will make your vacation healthy & fun!

Homemade Fruit Rollup Recipe

Today, I'm joining in with the Fit Dish Link up to share one of my favorite healthy desserts. I wouldn't say it's my all the time, have to have it desserts, but it's such a good one, and great for this time of year since so many of these yummy fruits are in season!  The Fit Dish, favorite healthy desserts!

Now before I share the recipe with you, let me preface. This is a recipe that I revived from my blog archives from when we were the Naturally Fit Sisters. So coming from you from July 10, 2013. This was right before I got pregnant, and I weighed more then than I do now.

I remember that summer, because I barely fit into any of my pants. I had gained a good 15 lbs (at least) from my "normal" weight. So all of my jeans fit so tight, so I just tried to avoid wearing them. Honestly I'm not sure why I had gained so much. I think it was just gradual. I barely at any vegetables at this time (unless they were rolled up in a recipe like this one). And I honestly had little control over my appetite/eating choices. I worked out and ran, but not a ton, and still my eating habits were so not on track, that even working out wasn't helping.

Anyways, this particular post was on a "Weightloss Wednesday," and I shared my weight. Now, today, in 2015, a year after having my son, I weigh in at about 148, and fit nicely into all of my clothes, which I am very thankful for. I actually tried on a shirt that I bought in China in 2008, that I remember getting to a point that I didn't fit in it, and it fit amazingly over the weekend! I was so happy because I love that shirt!

So let me go ahead and share with you the post and recipe from 2013!

ENJOY! And this is a great recipe to involved the kiddos in! But, the snack is yummy for adults as well! I LOVE IT!

July 10, 2013

"I weighed 160 this morning.

I started at 165 on June 16th, [2013], and today, on July 10th, [2013] I am at 160.

Today though, we have a wonderful recipe we want to share with you all!

Homemade, all natural fruit rollup recipe! No Sugar added, just lots of good fruits and veggies! by @brittanysuell

Here’s what you will need:

2-3 peeled and chopped APPLES

3-4 peeled and chopped CARROTS

1/2 a cup of BLUEBERRIES

1/2 a cup of STRAWBERRIES

1 tablespoon of HONEY

(you can add any of fruits or veggies you want to it really, this is just what I used. & the honey is in place of sugar that many recipes call for) [Yay, a sugar free recipe, before I went sugar free!]

YOU WILL ALSO NEED:  a food processor or high powered blender, and parchment paper

*You can also add some protein powder to it.  I have a Flavorless one, so it goes great in anything!

homemade fruit rollup

Once you have all of your fruits & veggies cut you put them in your food processor or blender.  I used a blender because most of my kitchen supplies were already packed.  It worked great though.

Once it is blended, this is where you mix the honey, and if you prefer your protein powder!

Then you lay out parchment paper on cookie sheets.  (we filled 3 of them), and you spread the mixture in a THIN layer across the parchment paper to fill the pan.

*You could also make little pancake size circles/blobs if you wanted.  We made big sheets like you see here, but we tore them into strips anyways, so individual blobs would work too.

Here’s the important part.  You then bake these things for 4 HOURS! Yes I said that right…..4 HOURS at the lowest temperature that your oven can go.  (Mine went to 170 degrees) We baked ours overnight and woke up to take them out, that’s because we started making them at 11pm! You will know they are done when every piece of it is dried out.  It shouldn’t have any wet or squishy pieces.

[you can also make these in a dehydrator]DSC_0751

Then once it cools you pull it up from the parchment paper.  And like I said we tore ours into strips and rolled them up the best we could.

Although they may look a tad bit like bacon, they sure are yummy.  Big Sis & I both went home with a tub full.  I ate them for a healthy, all-natural snack for myself, and she let Noah enjoy them as a snack!

Seriously these are so good and such a healthy alternative to store bought, sugar filled fruit rollups!"
