What to feed your kids!! The ULTIMATE KIDS SNACK!

It's summer, and we still have about a month of it. 

Are you at that place where you are DONE, you are ready to STOP making snacks altogether!?!? 

It seems that when summer hits, we are constantly just feeding our kids! Can I get an "Amen" from my other mamas out there?!?

So what do you feed your kids?


Many times because of the fast pacedness of our society, we tend to go for ease! We fill up baskets and drawers with pre-packaged snacks, that quite frankly probably fuels their sugar desire (or being more frank, let's call it what it is, their sugar ADDICTION), keeps them satisfied for a moment, then their body starts to want MORE! So they come back asking for more snacks! 

The same thing happens with chips, and empty carbs, and things like that. They don't really fuel their body, they just give them some quick energy that will shortly be absorbed, burned off, and their body will want more! 

So why not feed our kids something that's going to fuel them and keep them satisfied longer?!!? 

  1. Many times, like I said, the fueling snacks take more time to prep. So convenience wins out. 
  2. Sometimes it's just that we don't know what to feed them. 

I understand. But let me address both of these issues, and stya with me because I've got a snack that's going to blow both YOU and your kids minds!! 

So to address #1! You are right! HEALTHY FOOD takes time to prep! Look at the trends of our world! Back in the day, more time was spent in the kitchen, and our society was healthier! Today, barely any time is spent in the kitchen, and our health bills are showing the outcome of that! Not to mention that some of the leading causes of death today are now related to what we are eating! WE'VE GOT TO SPEND SOME TIME IN THE KITCHEN! 

Now I'm not saying hours upon hours upon hours. But 1-2 hours a week to prep some meals and/or healthy snacks will save your waistline, your health bills down the road, and potentially YOUR LIFE! It's worth it! YOU ARE WORTH IT! YOUR KIDS ARE WORTH IT!

What makes these so great!?

These are our favorite go-to afternoon snack, and not only are they delicious, but they are full of healthy goodness. Just a few simple ingredients, and you are getting good healthy fats and proteins to keep you satisfied longer! Plus the kids love to help make these, and they are easy to pack up to take to the park, or put in school lunches! 

All you need is: 

  • 1 apple 
  • 4 TBSP nut butter
  • toppings: shredded coconut, raw cacao nibs, seeds, nuts, chia seeds, cinnamon.

Freezer Meal Workshops Make Meal Planning & Prepping So Easy!


Okay, okay we all talk about how busy life is. And it truly is busy!  Between work, our social life, other obligations, plus if you are a parent that business doubles/quadruples, and you have even more on your plate. So seriously how do we find time to workout and eat healthy? 

Since I went sugar free in January, I really have come to the realization that it takes TIME to eat healthy. Many people try to make it seem so easy, but let's be's not. It takes time, and I'm thankful I"m home during the day with my son, working from home, and able to spend time in the kitchen trying and making sugar free recipes. But when you work full time with other obligations after work, seriously how do you have time to eat healthy? 

Our society make it so much easier to eat quick, processed, fast foods. So if you are in that boat, I totally get it. (That's one reason why I try to share as many of my SUGAR FREE RECIPES with you as possible, so hopefully you can find time to make them for your family!) 

Then you know there are those super productive and disciplined people who have a routine and they weekly meal prep or batch cook. Which is awesome for them. I have a couple of fitness industry friends that are seriously awesome at getting this done, and I am super impressed by them. 

BUT, for the rest of us....

What do we do?

Recently I started hosting Freezer Meal Workshops at my house. 

And since I didn't come up with the idea, and I brag and just say, this idea is GENIUS

Seriously, it's so smart! And I have had amazing feedback from the two I have hosted so far. I already have 3 more planned for the end of this month/first of July. 

So how do it work? 

Basically, people register to attend my workshops by paying a workshop fee. 

For the registration fee, they get a full menu (8 meals, which can be turned into 16 meals if you have a family of 2-3), plus the easy-to-read grocery list. Along with this, all utensils are provided, plus all the seasonings and rubs used in the recipes are provided. PLUS! They don't have to do it at their own house! Which means, no dirtying up the house, or adding hours to their meal prep just for cleaning up. They just come, meal prep, and leave. So it takes the hassle out of cleaning! 

Then, they leave with 8-16 prepped freezer meals! 

It's such a laid back atmosphere. I usually have coffee and a snack, and we just chat while being super productive. It's an amazing use of your time!

Plus, it gives back so much! 

When you are able to meal prep for your family like this, then that means you get more time to spend with your family during the week. 

Now you know evenings tend to be busy. Kids get home from school, parents get home from work. It's extra-curricular activities, homework, dinner, baths, and bed. Not much time to spend together as a family. So with having these meals already cooking in the crock-pot for dinner, you aren't spending an hour+ making dinner and away from your family. You are able to have that time back with your family, and dinner is just READY! 

How awesome is that!

One more awesome thing....the meals are HEALTHY! 

I go through all of the recipes and make them as healthy as possible. 

Because that's the point isn't it. If we just wanted meals for our family with no concern to the nutrition, then we could run through the McDonald's Drive-thru and shop the Dollar Menu if we needed. What I am offering families is a way to have HEALTHY MEALS prepped for themselves! There is so much more value in that! Remember, we are striving to Leave a Healthy & Active Lifestyle Legacy!

What if I don't eat certain things on the menu? 

Seriously, I have so many menus to choose from, and we can totally customize the menus if needed. There have been several people who don't eat shell fish, or pork. When that is the case, we can change the meat or just change the menu items all together!

Start 'em Young

As we all know, and can probably attest to, habits start young. My Little Z at 6 Months Old.  This is when he started eating whole foods.

Many of our personal habits now, both good and bad may have started early on in our childhood, passed to us from our parents or siblings.  And another thing we know as adults, is that bad habits are hard to break! Whether it's smoking, cursing, or bad eating habits....if you have ever decided to quit doing something you consider a "bad habit," you have experienced the challenges that come with the temptations to fall into old patterns.

Growing up, I lived at home with my brother, sister, and a single mom.  We were busy with extra-curricular activities of three children, sometimes my mom even worked two jobs, so eating out, and eating microwavable meals were the norm for us.  I grew up on McDonald's chicken nuggets, and man I loved them!

Now as an adult, that way of eating is a "bad habit" for the lifestyle that I desire to live.  I made the choice to change those habits, but it has taken me all of 5 years of marriage to really feel like I have a grip on things.  People used to talk about how disgusting McDonald's was, but even as an adult I LOVED it! When I began grocery shopping for my husband and me almost 5 years ago, the majority of things I bought were from the frozen section.  Now, I seldom eat at fast food restaurants, and as I mentioned previously in "How to Balance Your Grocery Cart," I buy the majority of my groceries in the fresh produce section.

So although I feel like I have KICKED the major issues of my bad eating habits, it's still tempting when my husband decides to get Ice Cream! (CONFESSION), and we sit together at night, like we have this week and have a bowl together....a BIG BOWL! 

As a mom of now a 6 month old, who has started eating whole foods, I have made the decision to START 'EM YOUNG! 

For our son, we have made the decision to do baby led weaning.  We knew we weren't going to do store bought baby food, even before he was born.  I had planned to puree his foods myself, but then my friend told me about baby led weaning, and I loved the idea.  Basically, you skip the pureed baby foods, and give the baby strips of fruits and vegetables, and they learn to feed themselves.


With the vegetables I give him, I steam them, then cut them in grab-able strips, if they need to be, then I freeze a small bowl of them.  Then when it's time to eat, I give him the frozen fruit, so it feels good on his teeth, and it doesn't break apart as easily. This has been a super easy process for us, and he has taken to it so well!



Plus, it is not a ton of extra work as some might think. Most the time, I will take the vegetables I am making us for dinner, make a little extra, and once they are cooked freeze a handful of them, then after I have taken his portion out, I then season ours.  So I have frozen fruits and vegetables on hand, so I don't have to cook just a small portion each time he is ready to eat.

I am so excited about this way of feeding him because I am really able to control what he is getting, and know that it is fresh, good fruits and vegetables.  Plus, I love seeing him learning more and more how to pick up the foods, and use his hand-eye coordination to feed himself, and discover the new tastes.

I hope that by doing this, and Starting 'em Young, that I am setting my son up for huge successes as he grows up.  That he will learn good eating habits now, and will grow up LOVING fresh, whole foods, and will avoid the struggle that I had to go through.


I do plan to do some purees with him, for example I made homemade apple sauce this week! Which was fun for me as well, something I have never done! I will be sharing that process and recipe with you in the near future.  I feel like it is important for him to try different textures, plus eating purees will teach him the skill of using a spoon, and learning to get the food and bring it to his mouth with a utensil.

Power Protein Bites

Today I'm sharing a yummy recipe with you!


I'm a sucker for snacks, so I'm constantly looking for healthy, (mostly) all-natural snacks that I can make in batch and enjoy over the next week or two when I get munchy. These yummy power bites are packed full of protein and are so yummy, PLUS they are no-bake! How great is that!?!?


Here's the recipe: 1cup dry oatmeal 2/3cup of coconut flakes 1/2cup peanut butter (I used all-natural) 1/2cup of dark chocolate chips 1/3cup of honey 1tbsp. Chia seeds 1tsp. Vanilla extract

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl, mid thoroughly with spoon or hands. Put mixture in refrigerator for half an hour to chill. Once chilled roll into 1inch balls. Store in air right container in refrigerator. ENJOY!

Puerto Rican Beef {My Version}

Do you ever have a night where you really do not know what you are going to cook? That was me tonight! I knew what food I had… and I knew I did not want to go to the store. We are going out of town for the weekend and then here for a few days then out for like 10 days on vacation.. so I am trying to limit what I buy -as I don't want to waste it. My dad brought me deer meat.. so I wanted to do something with that, but had no clue!

At 530 (well past my normal start of dinner time) I pulled out my handy-dandy "Everyday Paleo" book and decided to look up recipes for ground beef, as I had already started cooking my deer meat as you can see below. What I found was a Puerto Rican Beef that I did not have all the ingredients to, but I adapted.. and guess what? It was great! Keep reading to see what the true recipe is.. and what I did! IMG_5323

Everyday Paleo Big Sis'
Ingredients Ingredients
1 pound ground beef 1 pound deer meat
1/2 each green, red, and yellow pepper Mix of sweet peppers
1 white onion 1 white onion
3 tablespoons of EVOO 2 tablespoons of Coconut Oil
1/2 tablespoon cumin 1/2 tablespoon cumin
1 tsp. ground coriander 1 tbsp. oregano
1/2 tbls. Tureric powder sea salt and pepper
1 tablespoon oregano 4 turnips
pinch of saffron threads almond milk
sea salt and black pepper butter
1 bunch of kale, chopped
1/2 cup green olives
3 sweet potatoes
1 avocado


So as you can see, I made some adjustments. I was rather sad to see I had used all of my kale in my Zuppa Toscana that I made the other night… But it was still so yummy! I am into Turnips right now apparently… I am enjoying finding out how they taste… So first, make sure you peel it. I know they look gross.. but once they are peeled, they are white and look just like potatoes.


Here you can see where I have sautéed the deer meat with onions and peppers and I have put the turnips on to boil after cutting them up. I boiled them for about 15 minutes.


Once I finished with the turnips I blended them with Almond milk and some butter. Because of the amount of butter I used (on accident) I actually did not partake.. because I am watching what I am eating… The meat had a good spice to it, and I can figure out where it came from!! :D I also added some garlic salt to the turnips! IMG_5330

SOOO, because I didn't eat it… (I did try it) I had to ask my main squeeze what he thought.. and he is always super honest. Even if it is gross, he will eat it.. but he gave me a THUMBS UP!!! He even had me put it away for left overs… I didn't know if he would want me to keep the turnips or not-- but indeed he did! When I tasted it, they had a bit of a sweeter taste to them! :D IMG_5332

But of course, my four year old.. he wanted to thumbs up about his carrots and celery for us! :D IMG_5333 I hope if you guys try this you enjoy it as my family did!
