3 Must-Haves for a Happy & Healthy Vacation

So there's this theory out there that hasn't really been solved. People, even experts have their opinions, but no one has said which is the end all be all when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. The theory....MODERATION!  When it comes to living healthy, eating healthy, does the common term, "Do everything in moderation" really apply. I have read that yes, you should have a cheat day or meal. Then I have read that ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Being that I am sugar free, and know that sugar is addictive, when it comes to healthy eating, I lean more towards the strict healthy lifestyle, no cheat days, and moderation is not good.

Now I will say that I do eat sweets, but they are healthy and sugar free! To me that is learning to live a healthy lifestyle. Feeding the sweet tooth with healthy foods rather than sugary, fattening foods! I have an entire list of SUGAR-FREE HEALTHY, Sweet Recipes here! Try them out! They will feed that sweet tooth, but you aren't "cheating."

I have a similar theory when it comes to vacationing! I LOVE traveling and taking vacations! But since really jumping in to a healthy and active lifestyle, just as much as travel is one of my personal and family values, so is being active. So even on vacation, I find sugar free treats to enjoy, I eat well, and I workout and/or do active things. It's not as a chore either, it's because I LOVE IT and it's become my lifestyle. In the past I shared ways to making working out on vacation fun, HERE, and ways to make eating healthy on vacation easier, HERE

Today, I'm sharing 3 Must-Haves for a Happy & Healthy Vacation!

Since my husband and I are headed out on our first post-baby (he's 16months old) vacation together next week, this is at the forefront of my mind!

These are personal things that I think will make your vacation more fun, while also staying healthy! 3 Must-Haves for a Happy & Healthy Vacation with Brittany Suell

[bctt tweet="Make your next vacation HAPPY and HEALTHY with these three Must-Haves from @brittanysuell #sweatpink @fitapproach"]

1. Healthy Snacks!

This tip is not only good for your body, but for your budget! Vacationing, and buying ALL of your food there can get expensive! Save your wallet and take care of yourself by planning healthy snacks!

3 Must-Haves for a Happy & Healthy Vacation with Brittany Suell

Next week I will be traveling with these yummy Hemp Heart Bites from Manitoba Harvest! These things are packed full of goodness! 10grams of protein and 10grams of Omega-3 & 6 in each serving! Plus they taste amazing and are easy to travel with. They don't melt while out in the Texas heat which is a great thing when vacationing in Texas! Even my son loves them! He has actually been hogging them most of the time!

Snag some hemp hearts for you and your family and get 15% off when you order! These are great to send to school with the kids either for a snack or in their lunchbox!

2. A Good Pair of Pants

Now we all know that leggings are the go-to choice of pants these days, but what's even better, an amazing pair of pants made of flexible, breathable, water resistance material! That has several pockets, comes in great colors, and can go for cuteness, or comfort!

[bctt tweet="Get 15% OFF on your @PrAna order from @brittanysuell and @fitapproach #liveinprana #7daystretch #sweatpink #leaveyourlegacy"]

I absolutely love the color and fit of these Prana Meme pants from their Fall Zion Collection. You can also take advantage of a discount from Prana by using code: LiveInPrana15 for 15% off through September 30th!

These pants are going to be awesome for days when we are flying by the seat of our pants. Going out on adventures! They will be comfy for walking around town, or hanging at a coffee shop, while also working perfect if we decide to go for a hike or bike ride!  Since all of our activities are surprises being planned by my husband, I want to be prepared and these pants are sure to help me do that!

3. Workout Plans

The best thing about vacations. (well maybe not the best, but as far as fitness and working out) You can try new workouts that might not be offered in your town. You can take classes from different instructors. You can try out various gyms, etc. Or even if you don't want to go to a specific class, why not look up fun, active things to do on your vacation! Where you will be having SO MUCH FUN you will forget you are actually working out!

I love to take Yoga classes in new towns, and get different instructors perspectives. I love working out or running in new outdoor areas, and with my husband. I love going paddle boarding, or maybe taking a Barre class, which aren't things that are offered in my city. So plan those things! Make them a fun activity you do on vacation!

I know we will for sure go paddle boarding, hiking, and maybe rent bikes! These are all easy and fun things that will make your vacation healthy & fun!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO ON VACATION OR MUST-HAVE ITEMS TO MAKE YOUR VACAY HAPPY & HEALTHY??

Bulu Box Review

Let's be honest, nutrition products are needed. They can help enhance our workouts, help with pain, help us take care of ourselves, and increase our overall health all together. But while we are being honest, can we all admit that the nutrition industry is making a KILLING off of us.  Nutrition products aren't cheap, so when you buy them, it's usually with a good chunk of change, and there is always some risk involved. Sometimes the risk comes from you not getting the results you want from a product. While other times, it could just be that you can't stand the taste of the product. I have had several nutrition products that are so potent that I just can't handle drinking or taking them due to the taste.

Then there you have it. You have this entire container of an expensive product that you won't even be using. And you are left trying to decide if you want to find another product to buy, risking that the same thing could happen again.

WELL....no more of that!

Bulu Box has fixed the problem for us!

Rather than buying full size products with our fingers crossed and hoping it works out for us, Bulu Box has created a monthly subscription box where they will send you full size samples of health and nutrition products to try out.

I got a BuluBox this week, with some great products in it! Some I would never even think to look for at the store, but I realize would be very helpful for me. Here's what I got!

Bulu Box Review

  1. Yerba Prima-is a fiber powder, which I love to add to my smoothies but haven't had any to do that with in a long time. This specific one is full of goodness that promotes healthy bacteria in the gut. This is actually such a big deal, because with so much of the food in our world today, many of us are walking around with bad guts, which can cause a lot of inflammation in our body! I am definitely going to be trying this and reading up on it.
  2. The T-Brush-a different way to brush your teeth. This was a bonus for this box, but I am so intrigued, and have enjoyed the different shaped toothbrush so far.
  3. Island Boost-is supposed to be an automatic shot of energy without caffeine. I am running 8 miles tonight, so I plan to try this out and I'll let you know how it goes!
  4. RUNA Tea-I was so excited to see this. They sale this tea at a local Natural Grocers, and my friend just bought some and was telling me how amazing it was. PLUS, it's Sugar Free! She bought already made, bottled tea, but this is a tea bag. I'm excited to make some hot tea with it! Plus I love cinnamon.
  5. Movit Energy Gummies-Okay, I tried these on my 5miler last night, and it was my best run in a while. I felt INCREDIBLE!! Plus these things tasted great!

So take advantage of the 50% OFF Code from Fitappraoch, and who knows, you could find some amazing health and fitness products that could really help enhance your workouts and make you feel better! Even if some products you don't love, at least you didn't waste money on full sizes of them!

Avocado Ice Cream Recipe!

Summer isn't quite over yet. And while I'm itching to get into some leggings and boots, topped with a super cute scarf, I live in Texas which means I have a while to go. So I decided I would take advantage of more time with 95+ degree weather by adding two of my favorite things together!  Duh AVOCADOS & ICE CREAM!

Avocado Ice Cream Recipe! Simple, Healthy, and Good!

Now if you are like me, the thought of Avocado might intrigue you while also making you quite worried. When I first heard of it, I was a little skeptical as well. You don't often see avocado's going into sweet things, but let me just tell you, this is good!

Plus Avocados are just incredible foods to add to your diet. They are full of dietary fiber, they have more potassium than a banana, and have tons of amazing vitamins in them. Plus while most fruits are high in carbs, about 88% of the calories in an avocado are made from fat, but the good kind that you want to be eating!

So let's just get right to it! How about an Avocado Ice Cream Recipe!? A treat that tasty, full of goodness, it's sugar free, and simple to make!  All you will need to enjoy this yummy treat is a food processor or high-powered blender, plus all the ingredients listed.

Freezer Meal Workshops Make Meal Planning & Prepping So Easy!

freezer-meals-with-britt.jpg

Okay, okay we all talk about how busy life is. And it truly is busy!  Between work, our social life, other obligations, plus if you are a parent that business doubles/quadruples, and you have even more on your plate. So seriously how do we find time to workout and eat healthy?

Since I went sugar free in January, I really have come to the realization that it takes TIME to eat healthy. Many people try to make it seem so easy, but let's be honest...it's not. It takes time, and I'm thankful I"m home during the day with my son, working from home, and able to spend time in the kitchen trying and making sugar free recipes. But when you work full time with other obligations after work, seriously how do you have time to eat healthy?

Our society make it so much easier to eat quick, processed, fast foods. So if you are in that boat, I totally get it. (That's one reason why I try to share as many of my SUGAR FREE RECIPES with you as possible, so hopefully you can find time to make them for your family!)

Then you know there are those super productive and disciplined people who have a routine and they weekly meal prep or batch cook. Which is awesome for them. I have a couple of fitness industry friends that are seriously awesome at getting this done, and I am super impressed by them.

BUT, for the rest of us....

What do we do?

How can we make healthy foods for our family when our life is so busy?

Freezer Meal Workshops make meal planning and prepping so easy! with @brittanysuell

Recently I started hosting Freezer Meal Workshops at my house.

And since I didn't come up with the idea, and I brag and just say, this idea is GENIUS

Seriously, it's so smart! And I have had amazing feedback from the two I have hosted so far. I already have 3 more planned for the end of this month/first of July.

So how do it work?

Basically, people register to attend my workshops by paying a workshop fee.

For the registration fee, they get a full menu (8 meals, which can be turned into 16 meals if you have a family of 2-3), plus the easy-to-read grocery list. Along with this, all utensils are provided, plus all the seasonings and rubs used in the recipes are provided. PLUS! They don't have to do it at their own house! Which means, no dirtying up the house, or adding hours to their meal prep just for cleaning up. They just come, meal prep, and leave. So it takes the hassle out of cleaning!

Then, they leave with 8-16 prepped freezer meals!

It's such a laid back atmosphere. I usually have coffee and a snack, and we just chat while being super productive. It's an amazing use of your time!

Freezer Meal Workshops make meal planning and prepping so easy! with @brittanysuell

Plus, it gives back so much!

When you are able to meal prep for your family like this, then that means you get more time to spend with your family during the week.

Now you know evenings tend to be busy. Kids get home from school, parents get home from work. It's extra-curricular activities, homework, dinner, baths, and bed. Not much time to spend together as a family. So with having these meals already cooking in the crock-pot for dinner, you aren't spending an hour+ making dinner and away from your family. You are able to have that time back with your family, and dinner is just READY!

How awesome is that!

Ladies making their meals at our Freezer Meal Workshop

One more awesome thing....the meals are HEALTHY!

I go through all of the recipes and make them as healthy as possible.

Because that's the point isn't it. If we just wanted meals for our family with no concern to the nutrition, then we could run through the McDonald's Drive-thru and shop the Dollar Menu if we needed. What I am offering families is a way to have HEALTHY MEALS prepped for themselves! There is so much more value in that! Remember, we are striving to Leave a Healthy & Active Lifestyle Legacy!

Here's an example of my upcoming menu:

Freezer Meal Workshops make meal planning and prepping so easy! with @brittanysuell

What if I don't eat certain things on the menu?

Seriously, I have so many menus to choose from, and we can totally customize the menus if needed. There have been several people who don't eat shell fish, or pork. When that is the case, we can change the meat or just change the menu items all together!

I want to work with you to make it fit your family's needs.

Isn't it Awesome!

I am seriously loving being able to do this! I really feel like it's a way for me to spread the Leave Your Legacy Lifestyle in person with people. To share with them my passion of helping families make healthy choices!

Plus, I am working with some to host LONG DISTANCE FREEZER MEAL WORKSHOPS!

So, if you are local, obviously you can sign up for an upcoming workshop! If you are long distance but this interests you, then let me know, I can contact you and we can customize a workshop for you and your friends!

As a sidenote, along with hosting these Freezer Meal Workshops, I am a consultant for Velata. That is the brand of seasonings/rubs that we use for the workshop. They are all non-GMO, diary, nut, soy free, and totally yummy!

What Does #LeaveYourLegacy Mean to You?

EDITED-0010.jpg

So as you know, when I launched the new blog rebrand in mid-January, a big part of that brand is:

Live a life that is about more than you! Be Bold, Be Strong, Be Courageous, and Leave a Legacy for those you love! @brittanysuell

Now, I have  had time to mull this over, toss it around, and really evaluate what it means to me to #LeaveYourLegacy. So today, I'm going to share what it means to me, and I hope that at the end of this post that you can share with me what LEAVING A HEALTHY AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLE LEGACY means to you.

Live a life that is about more than you! Be Bold, Be Strong, Be Courageous, and Leave a Legacy for those you love! @brittanysuell

When I think about what kind of Legacy I want to leave, so many things come to mind.

First off, who am I LEAVING a LEGACY for!?!

The obvious answer is my family. My son (future children). Beyond those that are closest to me that I love the most though, I want to impact even more than that. Even if it's only in small ways, I want my LEGACY to trickle into other's lives. My friends, those that I teach, my blog followers, even strangers that I just have random (fate) encounters with. I want to live a LIFESTYLE that is real, and bold enough that people can see the depth of me and pick up on little pieces of that, that can change their lives.

Secondly, what kind of LEGACY am I LEAVING!?

I want to be strong, bold, courageous. I want to be a pursuer of goals, a dreamer, a person who thrives in the adventures (whether big or small) of life. I want to be real, and authentic. I want my children to grow up knowing that they can do anything that they set their minds to. Anything that they have vision for, they can pursue. I want people to see the go-getter-ness within me, and be inspired to push a little harder, and go a little further to achieve their dreams and desires. Mostly, I want to leave a LEGACY that impacts lives, upon lives, upon lives to come. I want to be real in who I am, in my health, and fitness goals. I want people to know that they can get healthy and active, no matter where they are starting. And I want them to see that living a healthy and active lifestyle really means that they will be living their best, most successful life possible.

WHY? Why does all of this mean so much to me?

I believe that when we are living a healthy & active lifestyle, that we are able to live Our Best Life. Our Happiest Life. Our Most Successful Life. Wondering why I say that?? Because when we are healthy and active, we have more self confidence. When we are moving, and doing things that are good for ourselves, taking care of our bodies, then we feel secure, and confident. Which means that we will love ourselves, which means that it will be easier for our children to love themselves and be confident just by watching us. When we are healthy and active, we are able to move, and do so many things. We have the ability to take chances, enjoy life's adventures, and even simpler than that, not be afraid to get on the floor or run around the yard with our children. When we are healthy, we spend less money on doctor bills, surgeries, and diseases, which means we have more money in our pockets. And although, of course money isn't the key to all happiness, it does ease our minds of worry and stress and make us feel happier in life. When we are healthy & active, we are not afraid to face life head on. We are able to be BOLD, CONFIDENT, STRONG people who go after their dreams, and that, that makes us HAPPY!

[bctt tweet="What kind of Legacy will you leave!?! And why does it matter? #leaveyourlegacy @brittanysuell"]

Live a life that is about more than you! Be Bold, Be Strong, Be Courageous, and Leave a Legacy for those you love! @brittanysuell

So there you have it! That's What kind of Legacy I want to leave! That's why my life vision is "Leaving a Healthy & Active Lifestyle Legacy"

So will you join me!?!

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Tell me, what kind of legacy will you leave? and why is it important?

CHALLENGE: Share with others! If you are a blogger, blog about What #LeaveYourLegacy means to you. Otherwise, post on your Facebook page, or post a photo on instagram or twitter, and tag me! #LeaveYourLegacy @BrittanySuell I want to know what kind of Legacy you will leave!

Homemade Applesauce #MommyMonday

Mommy Monday

As many of you have seen in the past, I am doing Baby-Led Weaning with my son, (learn what that is, and all about the nutritional value of it HERE). Along with that, I am also feeding him only food I cook, (for the most part). So, I am avoiding jar baby food, and as much processed foods as I can.  Mostly I am feeding him whole fruits and vegetables that I steam or bake and then cut into strips.  There are a few items that I puree myself so that he can try out various textures and practice using utensils, and APPLE SAUCE is one of those.

So today I'm going to share my EASY-PEASY HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE with you!

First, let me start with a little nutrition lesson:

DISCLAIMER: No judgement if you buy this for your children, just want to show you how much sugar and other unnecessary ingredients are added to these types of store bought foods, and how easy it is for you to make this homemade at your house!

dcs-074b_2z

1) Applesauce for a baby does not need ANYTHING added to it! It doesn't have to be sweet for them to eat it.  Remember, as a baby, you are helping them develop their taste pallet, so it's okay for it not to have brown sugar or cinnamon flavoring in it.

If you are making this for older kids or adults, try some flavoring (I'll mention what I did at the end), but still try to avoid added sugars. There is enough natural sugar in fruits that you don't need to add more!

2) True Applesauce doesn't need anything added to it except a little water.

You have probably heard that high fructose corn syrup is one of the worst things you can eat, and one of the main reasons you should avoid processed foods because it is added to everything! I am not a nutrition pro (yet), but I will say after making my own Applesauce, I have NO IDEA why they would need to add all of these things to their ingredients.

*Some recipes tell you to add Apple Juice as your liquid base. Not a big deal if it is ALL NATURAL. BUT, once again, if it is store bought Apple Juice, then it probably has unnecessary sugars added to it as well, so you are just replacing one with the other. The safest way to go is to just use water as your liquid.

2013-01-22-09.20.19-1024x768

3) Many store bought foods, even foods for kids/babies have tons of sugar added to it! Like a ton...Like WAY TOO MUCH!

Check out how much sugar is in one small cup of this Applesauce. When making my own Applesauce, obviously there is sugar, but it's all natural sugar, so I don't even worry about it.  A lot of the sugar in this brand's sauce probably came from the unnecessary added high fructose corn syrup mentioned above.

91tnkG9hxBL._SL1500_

On to the recipe!

apple sauce

HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE:

-Take 2 apples

-Peel them, core them, dice them

-Put on to boil with 1/2 a cup of water

10799418_324290261097347_990069132_n

-Let them cook on med/high heat for about 20 min (apples will be soft and slightly broken a part)

-Pour the apples/liquid into blender & blend until smooth

10866913_324290257764014_1553889552_n

-For a baby, divvy it up into containers and freeze. Then when you are ready to serve it, heat slightly so that it melts and serve it to baby.

10850863_324290241097349_1973389324_n

I ate the Homemade Applesauce just like this, and it tasted great! Seriously, with the already natural sugars that apples have, it had plenty of flavors.

For my husband, I wanted to try something a little different, so I added a 1/4 of a teaspoon of cinnamon, and he ate it like that. It was great with the cinnamon flavor as well. Still though, there was no need to add any more sugar to it in my opinion.

10751997_324290227764017_1391740110_n

So, instead of taking the easy way out and buying the store bought brands, why not take just a little more time out of your weekend and prep a bunch of yummy Homemade Applesauce for the week!

Applesauce makes a great snack for adults and kids! You can take it for lunch, or eat it in the afternoons, and seriously it takes about 25-30 minutes to make, and most of that time is when it is boiling on the stove so you can be getting other things done. Then you can rest easy, because you know exactly what is in the food that you are feeding yourself and your children. Plus, your just adding to the daily serving of fruits that you are taking in, and that is always a PLUS!

[bctt tweet="You've got to try this yummy Homemade Applesauce recipe from @NFSisters great for a kid-friendly or adult-friendly snack! #MommyMonday"]

So, try the recipe, and be sure to post a picture and tag me when you are loving how yummy it is! @NFSisters #MommyMonday

Day 10

Working Out vs. An Active Lifestyle

Do you ever struggle with getting your workout in? Why is it that when it comes to living a busy life, that exercising is always the first thing to get put on the back burner?

Today I'm linking up with Jill Conyers & The Fit Switch with #DishtheFit to talk about How to Simplify the Active Lifestyle.

Processed with Moldiv

Take these three tips, and take Working Out from being just a duty, something you have to check off your list, and instead lets change your lifestyle to be more active, so that exercising is something you do naturally, out of passion and priority rather than duty.

1) Become Passionate about Working Out, And Make It A Priority

Next time you work out, really become aware of the feelings you have in the hours and day following your workout. What emotions come up, how do you feel about yourself, what does the exercise, endorphin "high" do to you!?  I'm sure if you were to describe the workout high you feel, you might use some of these words:

motivated Now fall in love with those feelings! Make those feelings something you have to have!

2) Let Active Living Be A Part of Your Every Day Life

Now here is the key part! Once you become passionate about being active, and getting that workout high becomes a priority, now it's time to let that saturate every part of your life.

This means in the office, that you desire to take the stairs, or the long walk around the building just so you can move and get active. This means that when you don't have time to go to the gym at night or in the morning, that you take your workout clothes, and you get moving during your lunch break.  Because even 30 minutes of activity feels better than none. This means that when it comes to deciding what to do as a family over the weekend, that you are looking into events or activities that get the entire family moving together.

It's easy, when being active becomes something you are passionate about, then it is at the forefront of your mind.  So you are constantly looking for active things to do in your every day life, (not just going to the gym).

3) Get Around Other People Who Are Passionate About Active Living

Do you know how hard it is to love being active and have friends who just want to do is sit around and talk or go to the movies all the time.  That does not make it easy for you to get active.  You need friends who enjoy working out and being active.

You need friends who will go take a kickboxing class with you just for fun, or come over to practice Acro-Yoga with you. You need friends that want to go on a weekend hiking trip with you and enjoy being outdoors and moving just as much as you do.

Even if it's as simple as walking together while you talk.  I do this with my friends all the time.

And like Chalene Johnson always says, "If your friends don't work out with you, then GET NEW FRIENDS!"  Okay, maybe that's a little extreme, really though, isn't there a little truth in that?

Protein Powder:

There are so many brands of protein powders out there.  When finding one, I would suggest finding a natural, or plant based powder, here are two suggestions from previous reviews we have done: Skoop & Manitoba Harvest Both are plant based, and have great flavors.

I personally use protein powder in my smoothies because I use smoothies as meal replacements, and sometimes, post workout nutrition.  When it is as a meal replacement, it's important for me so that I am able to stay full longer.  When I am using a smoothie as a post workout drink, the protein aids in muscle recovery.  (more about that HERE)

Green Veggies:

My two favorite green veggies to add to my smoothies are:

KALE

Kale is high in beta cartene and vitamins K and C.  It also contains sulforaphane, and indole-3-carbinol. Screen Shot 2014-10-23 at 10.39.39 PM

SPINACH

Spinach is full of antioxidants, vitamins A, C, E, K, B2, and B6, magnesium, manganese, folate, betaine, iron, calcium, potassium, folic acid, copper, protein, phosphorus, zinc, niacin, selenium, and omega-3-fatty-acids. Screen Shot 2014-10-23 at 10.39.59 PM

So basically, adding greens to your smoothie is AWESOME FOR YOU!!! So DO IT!!

And don't be afraid of them! Just a handful of greens and you won't even taste them, your smoothie just might have a hint of green color to it! I love adding a handful to mine just because that means a little more vegetable intake for that day, and a whole lot more of GOOD NUTRITIONAL VALUE in my smoothie!

Chia Seeds:

Screen Shot 2014-10-23 at 10.36.02 PM

Same seeds used to create a CHIA PET! You know those little grass heads sold on TV Info-mercials in the 90's! These seeds are FILLED with Omega-3-fatty-acid and are also dietary fibers.

Some people even let these sit for a while, because as they sit in liquid, they become little jelly capsules, so they thicken up your smoothie! Yum! Or add them to a bowl of yogurt or oatmeal!

Flax Seeds:

Screen Shot 2014-10-23 at 10.31.32 PMFlax seeds are high in dietary fiber, micronutrients, and omega-3 fatty acids, and have about 800 times the amount of antioxidant lignans of any other plant.

I have used the ground version or whole seeds in my smoothies, but usually the whole seeds get grounded some by the blender anyways.

Peanut Butter

Screen Shot 2014-10-23 at 11.22.44 PM

A balanced source of energy, and supplies all three macronutrients. About 13% carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 72% fats. Great to add in for an extra boost of protein, but also be careful not to add too much, and go overboard with it.

Be sure to get natural peanut butter though.  Many regular peanut butter brands actually have sugars added to them....why did they ever do that? I don't know, in my opinion, a natural peanut butter has plenty of sweetness to it! So GO NATURAL!

These are my TOP 5 most used Nutritious Additives in my Smoothies, but I asked fellow Health & Fitness Bloggers, and here's some others they often times add.

Others:

-Almond Butter -Full of nutrients and vitamins, and has different nutritional values than peanut butter.

-PB2-a low calorie powder form of peanut butter

-Bee Pollen -claimed to be nearly 40% protein and contain all nutrients required by humans

-Maca Powder - a Peruvian root powder that contains many vitamins, aids in energy, and more.

-Cacao Nibs -crumbles from whole Cacao beans, rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and fibers, and adds a natural chocolate flavor!

-Coconut Oil -claims to be easy to digest, and to help boost metabolism.

So in your adventure to become a Pro-Smoothie Drinker, I hope this helps!!!

Pick a couple of these on the list that interest you or seem like they would benefit your body and diet the most and go with it! You don't have to do them all!

So.....

Well-Living Wednesday & My Fave Way to Eat Sweet Potatoes

It's Well-Living Wednesday, and today I'm sharing with you my favorite way to eat sweet potatoes....by making Sweet Potato Chips!

Last week in my post "I want to be just like you," I wrote about how we need to be examples to our children, and those around us by choosing a healthy lifestyle, rather than going along with the fast paced life of processed snacks and fast food meals!

It's easy to use the excuse of not knowing what healthy snack alternatives to choose, so I'm going to make it easy by giving you some ideas! Recently in my house we have started making Sweet Potato Chips on a weekly basis! They are such a yummy way to eat sweet potatoes, and a great alternative to a bag of process chips! 10733374_305937026266004_989273959_n

Sweet Potato Chips

-Peel the sweet potatoes, then use the slicer side of the cheese grater to cut the sweet potatoes into chip style strips.  Toss the strips in a bowl with olive oil, then lay them out on a pan. (Using a pizza pan with holes in it cooks them the best) Lightly sprinkle with salt.  Cook at 200 degrees for 2 hours. (or you can put them in a dehydrator.)

Like my Kale Chip Recipe, these never seem to make it further than the pan.  Every time we make them, we stand over the finished product and eat them all up, even when I am trying to save some for later! They are that good!

So make the choice this week to switch out the bags of processed potato chips in your pantry for some homemade Sweet Potato Chips! & if you like those, then be sure to check out my recipe for Kale Chips and add those to your weekly snack rotation as well!

There are so many great options, and I'm sure the entire family will love them!

Here are my Weightloss stats for the week:

Week 13: -1.1lbs

Week 14: -.2lbs

Week 15: -1.3 lbs (152lbs) Total: -8.6lbs

I would love to hear if you try one of my chip recipes, and comment below with your favorite healthy snack!

What is your favorite healthy snack!??

Healthy Choice Desserts

Last week I posted about our new adventures in Eating Clean! I am really excited to see where this takes me and my husband.  I have already felt changes in myself, and am excited to see and feel more!

When I first started thinking about making these changes, I realized I needed to find an alternative to snacks, or desserts.  I love cold desserts/snacks.  I love getting fro-yo, or Icee's, and I enjoy an occasional snack! Especially at night! So I had to think of something better for me than the norm.  I thought about making fun frozen treats, and the next day I saw a cook book just for that at Sam's! I bought it for $5.99....well worth it for me! Not only is this a great treat for me now, but it will be wonderful to have all of these fun recipes when I have kids.  Then I picked up these two packs of popsicle trays at Wal-Mart for $1.50 each!

The first popsicle I decided to try out was the Strawberry-Lemon Pop!

For this here's what you needed:

1-Cup of strawberries

1-Tablespoon of lemon

1-cup of milk

1/2-cup of yogurt (plain, but I used strawberry because that's what we had)

1-teaspoon of sugar

*At the time I made this I used Splenda, but I learned last week that it is better to use HONEY to sweeten things.  So that is what I used on the ones I made this week! & I have also been using that on my coffee too! :-)

**I also added my unflavored protein powder to add an extra punch of goodness in there!

IMG_2097

Then you just stick it all in your blender until it is pureed.

IMG_2098

Next you pour them evenly into the little trays! This recipe made a tray and a half of these!

IMG_2102

Then I froze them overnight, and enjoyed them the next day!!

IMG_2104

I'm telling you, you should definitely try these out! They are easy and fun, and can be all natural! I used all fresh, organic fruits, and organic milk & yogurt! So I feel great about eating these no matter what time of day it is! They could even double as a smoothie in the morning, with the protein and fruit, it's like a small smoothie on a stick!

Plus the kids will LOVE IT!

This is a great snack/treat for kids! Way better than store bought popsicles that are dripping with fake stuff and sugar!! :-)

My nephew loved them and had like 3 this weekend!

Clean Eating

You may know that I, Little Sis have had 3 High School Asian boys living with me for the past two years.  In short my husband and I did a host parenting program.  We decided after two great years that it is now time for us to stop doing that and enjoy us together, and start working on our own family!!

cupcakes

Anyways, what's this got to do with Clean Eating!?!? LOL Well when you have 5 people in your house, you buy food that stays under your budget.  We didn't buy horrible food, but we shopped at Sam's, and knew exactly what we got each time.  Not a lot of thought going into it.  I mean I would meal plan but that was just to help with the budget.  (meal planning on a budget post here) I didn't think much about how we were eating health-wise as a family. I mean I would try to buy veggies, and fruit, but usually bagged, steam-able veggies or something.

Anyways, now that it is just my husband and I, I  have decided to start taking control of what we are eating and make changes! I am not doing this to be a part of some Gluten Free or Paleo fad that is going around.  I have read some about Clean Eating, and will continue reading more, but I understand the importance of eating more natural food, and less processed food.  But believe me, this is no easy task! I was raised on processed food, I love McDonald's, so this will be a challenge, but one I am ready for and excited to take!

One of the best things I read before starting this journey into Clean Eating is to think of it on an 80-20 scale.  80% Clean eating, 20% not.  And I don't think okay I'll buy this and then splurge for my 20%.  No the 20% is to help me, I am not doing this to punish myself, but because I want to.  So the 20% really does help! I mean I am not going to clear out my cabinets and waste food that we already have.  But from now on I am striving to buy more "Clean" foods, so that's the 80%.  I'll explain more below with my first Clean Meal!

But first, a few things I did to start my Clean Eating.  Find a local Farmer's Market.  I swear my city is WAY behind on health initiatives! But they still have a small Farmer's Market.  So I went.  I didn't need a ton because I had already gotten some fresh veggies from my Dad's garden, but I did get these two things.

Or maybe this is your chance to start your own garden! If you have the time and resources that could be fun! Just enough to feed your family!

iPhoto

Anyways, I bought fresh Kale & Cucumbers.  Here's what I use them for:

Cucumbers-I literally slice up and dip in ranch.  (Guess I need to look into buying organic ranch :-) But I eat it for lunch, dinner, snack.  I am not a HUGE Veggie eater so I take what I can get.  I will eat baby carrots with this too!

Kale-You wash it.  Thoroughly dry it.  Then lay it on a baking sheet, sprinkle Olive Oil on it and salt, and bake it at 350 degrees for 10 minutes and you get crunchy Kale chips.  The first time I had them I wasn't in love, but I tried again and am liking them.  The only bad thing is that Kale is a taste that stays in your mouth for a while :-)

NEXT:  I went shopping at our local Natural Grocer's store.  This is newer to my town, but most town's have something similar.

Here's what I got!

IMG_2093

So here I am talking about EATING CLEAN, but maybe you don't even know what that means....

Yeah neither did my husband....In the middle of Natural Grocers my husband said...."What does ORGANIC even mean...!?!?!"

By definition, Organic foods are, "foods that are produced using methods of organic farming – that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Organic foods are also not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents, or chemical food additives."

Basically Clean Eating is eating food in it's most basic form, not processed or full or synthetics or chemicals.

So fresh food is one of the best things to have, or cage free products.

So now....for my first ever Clean Meal.

Here is where I explain more about the 80-20 part.  I'm telling you, have this in the back of your mind and you won't set yourself up for failure.  If you have the mindset of going 100% Clean, then when all your friends go to eat, you are depressively declining because of your choice to be healthy.  NO, go eat with your friends! It's a choice, not PUNISHMENT! (just don't go out to eat every night) hahaha Make good choices! This blog post was amazing at describing this.  Her point of view was based on her young daughters and not wanting to put a misconception of food into their minds that could later lead to eating disorders. It's a very interesting read!

IMG_2094

Our first official "Clean Meal." I used the All Recipes, Chili's Chicken Enchilada Soup.

Anyways, I made the Kale chips I mentioned above, but used my Wal-Mart bought olive oil.  I made guacamole with organic avocados & the Organic Blue Corn Chips that I bought.   In the soup, (which tastes way better than it looks here), I used mostly fresh stuff, but the enchilada sauce I had bought a while back so I used it, and it wasn't organic.  Things like that.  If I already have it, I'm going to use it.  And I still felt GREAT about myself because I had set the 80-20 expectation up for myself, so I was okay that it wasn't all PERFECTLY CLEAN/ORGANIC FOOD!

Anyways, I will continue to update you on how things are going.  A few things I have planned for the coming weeks it to share with you about fresh fruit frozen treats I have made, and about a Gluten Free Cooking Class that I went to!

Here's to CLEAN EATING!! #theSuellsEatClean  (had to make my own hashtag) :)
