How To Make Working Out Something You Enjoy!

Here's the problem...people don't workout because they don't enjoy it. 

Last night I looked in the mirror as I was getting ready for bed. My muscles super fatigued from my recent leg workout, and I thought..."You know, I REALLY ENJOY working out." 

I'm not sure when this concept switched for me. When working out became fun and something I desire/crave versus something I have to or need to do to lose weight or stay fit. But I'm so thankful it did. I looked forward to working out and getting active. I look forward to sweating, moving, and stretching! 

How can you get to that place of ENJOYMENT?

Here's 3 Tips to Make Working Out Something You Enjoy:

1) Make it something you can do!

-If working out is not something you do often, don't make the hardest class at the gym the one you go to to try and get back into the swing of things. When you try something too hard, where you feel like you aren't getting any of the moves or able to make progress, it will more than likely discourage you from continuing. 

Find something that challenges you, but doesn't make you feel like a total failure! Little victories spike your enjoyment and create a desire to keep trying and keep getting better. 

2) Make sure the workout you choose isn't too long, but fits your time schedule

-If you only have 30minutes, don't try to fit in an hour workout. If it's longer than you have time for, you won't stick to it. Other things will take priority. Decide how long each day you have to commit to working out, and find a workout that fits that amount of time! THEN GET IT DONE!

3) Make it something FUN!

-So as you all know I am 2.5 months postpartum. I've recently done two things to make working out something that is fun and desirable for me. Because even though I enjoy it, when you are just getting back into it, it can most definitely still be difficult to be motivated. First, I have started doing a workout with my husband! This is so fun to me! I love to workout with him and us be challenged together! So it makes me more motivated to do and stick to the workout! Secondly, for a little cardio, this week I started the new Beachbody Country Heat Workout! It's amazing! It's country dancing. Great music, fun moves, plus lots of sweat! I've loved it and the fun of it has definitely kept me coming back each day! Let me know if you want to try out this workout!

Snack Prep Tips

Just about every weekend I spend some time making some of my favorite healthy snacks. It's my way of making sure our family is ready to have a success week of healthy eating! Plus when you live a sugar free lifestyle, preparation is KEY! Since mostly every snack around convenient stores, grocery stores, etc...all contain sugar. 

It only takes a couple of hours. I decide which snacks we will have for the week, add the ingredients to my shopping list, then prep for an hour or so. I usually will make two batches of each and freeze parts of them so that we have plenty! When I have prepped snacks, not only is it good for me, but it's great for keeping my husband away from junk food! 

Lately I have been utilizing Bob's Red Mill Nutritional Boosters and Protein Powders in a lot of my snack recipes. A few weeks ago I shared this amazing Butter Nuggets recipes! These things are full of protein, plus taste like candy!  

I love adding protein powder to lots of healthy snacks. Plus when using Bob's Red Mill products you know that they are sugar free, gluten free, vegan and full of probiotics (which we could all use more of for that gut health!).

Here's some of my favorite weekly snacks to make:

Farewell, I'm off to Yoga Training with some Paleo Snacks & a GIVEAWAY!

Wow I am so excited for the next several days! I am heading out to my Level 4 Yoga Training, which is four days packed of Yoga Knowledge! I will learn a ton, plus get to take Master Classes from some incredible instructors. Plus I also packed in a mini course one evening that is all about using essential oils in Yoga! (Yes I'm an essential oil believer! I use them on my son all the time!) Then, on Monday, July 20th I will go take my ACE Group Fitness Certification Exam which puts me one step closer to becoming a Fit4Mom Stroller Strides Instructor! (Pray for me!)

So, an exciting several days ahead of me. But from my mommy heart I'm a little timid since I will be leaving my son for 4 days....the longest I have left him yet! (Pray for me double time)

I can't believe it though, it was about 3 years ago, to the date, that I made the decision to start my Yoga Training. Here's the picture I posted on Facebook, July 29, 2013!

So what I'm loving most about my pack: 

1) The dried fruit! I got dried strawberries, which taste like gummy snacks! Even at our local natural food store, the strawberries, (and most fruits) are sweetened with sugar....which I just don't get, and it annoys me so much! I was relieved to see that these are just strawberries! My son and I both love them! 

2) Which brings me to the second awesome thing. My son loves it all! He's only one, but I feel comfortable feeding him all of this! Oh, and on that note, my husband loves it too. He sat down and ate an entire pack of beef jerky...which I gave him a hard time about. But being sugar free, my husband still eats some sugar, despite me not wanting him too. It's hard for us to find him good fulfilling snacks though, so getting Paleo Snacks from Steve's makes that easier! 

3) The GRANOLA! OMG I love it! If you look at most store bought granolas, they are packed with sugar. The one that we used to eat on a regular basis even has so much sugar in it. And I still haven't found a homemade recipe that I love. This one is so good and is cinnamon flavored, and I love cinnamon. 

4) And lastly.....they have Paleo, Sugar Free KETCHUP!!! Which this may not seem like a big deal to you. But since giving up sugar in January, I have had no ketchup. Well I take that back, I made my own once, but it wasn't incredible, and I only made it once. And they have tons of sauces. Which if you didn't know, lots of sugar hides in the sauces and dressings that you eat, so for me this is a relief!

Backyard Body Burner + a Casio Watch Giveaway

Man, my past few weeks have been so crazy! First I was sick, then I had my niece and nephew for a week, traveled for 5 days to visit family, got sick again, and now I am finally home and back into my normal routine. Needless to say, that throughout those 2-3 weeks, things were crazy and my weekly workout routine was off some. I went probably a week without doing much due to being sick, so now that I am back and feeling great, I have been ready to workout!  So this weekend I decided that my husband and I should do a backyard workout together, and let me just tell you, this thing got it's name honestly, because it is definitely a BODY BURNER! 

Once my husband agreed to workout with me, I was so excited. So I wrote down five workouts for us to do, and added some time intervals, and it made for a quick and intense workout. One that we both enjoyed, and left us both sweating, shaking, and muscles sore the following day!

So to complete this workout you will need a few items: The TRX Suspension Band, a Kettle Bell or Dumbbell, and a timer or awesome watch! 

So for this workout, since we did timed intervals of each, I used my awesome CASIO Sport Watch from Kohl's.

This watch was super helpful for creating and doing an interval workout! The timer functionality of it is super easy to use, which I love. I know a lot of people who use timers and/or timer apps while they workout. Which will beep every 30sec or so to tell them to switch sets, well I love that this watch does that as well. Makes it easier to do interval training, without the added timer or having your phone on you.

I'm not sure if bright socks make you run faster, but if they are tight socks, specifically compression socks, then they will probably make your legs feel better after a long or fast run.

Let me tell you though, these socks have more going for them than just being bright, fun, and matching my outfit. (You have to admit they look pretty cute with my bright clothes though!)

These socks are compression socks! 

Now I've shared over the past several months about compression sleeves and how great compression gear can be to help recovery from intense workouts or runs, but I have never worn full socks that are compression.

I remember after running my first half marathon in 2012, we spent the afternoon at an outdoor mall! Ya crazy right! Walking around after running 13.1 miles that morning. And I remember saying, "I wish I had really tight leggings all over my legs. I just feel like that would make them feel better." I said this because my muscles were so flimsy, jello-y, and sore. This was before I knew what compression socks were, and now, they actually have full compression leggings as well. 

When you where compression socks while running, before running, or even after running, (or hard intense workouts), studies have shown that they stimulate blood flow and oxygen to muscles, allowing legs to recover faster from a hard run. 

So no wonder compression gear has become an essential part of a runner's wardrobe! 

Since I have only ever used compression sleeves, it was different having the full sock from TIUX, but I actually really enjoyed it. Now days, you can find most socks (not just for runners), that have some type of compression in them, usually a little band around the arches. So it was nice to have the added compression and stability around my feet. Plus, they have added support around the back part of the ankle, and the socks are a good thickness. Not too thin like you might imagine for compression, but not too thick, so that they are still easily used in the Texas summer that is coming up!

Also because of their specific way of production, they are able to keep their prices at just $35 for a long compression sock. Which in comparison to many other compression gear companies, is a GREAT PRICE! Very affordable if you are interested in trying compression out for the first time! 

 So I will definitely be wearing these throughout the summer as I train for my October Half Marathon (more to come on this next week!)

Fake It 'Til You Make It! + A Giveaway


Fake it 'til youmake it....find out how faking it is a good thing! From @brittanysuell Hm.....not sure what you think about that phrase?? 

Ya I wasn't either when I first read it in the book, The Skinny Confidential written by Lauryn Evarts. 

My first thought was...."Nope, I don't agree with this girl." 

I mean aren't we supposed to be REAL: during the good, the bad, and the ugly. That's when people relate to us the most, right!?? People love it when we are vulnerable and real, even when things aren't all sunshine and daisies. 

What I learned when I read this chapter of her book though was very good, and actually something I whole heartedly agree with. 

Basically it comes down to this....when you walk around saying you can't do something, or you aren't good at something, you are giving that "something" power over you. So instead of allowing that "something" to hover over you as something you can't do, why not just do it, even if you aren't good at it or really don't enjoy it. Then as you begrudgingly do the "something," you will find yourself getting better at it and probably growing more accustomed to it. 

Practice makes perfect right! 

Here are two practical examples:

#1--"I can't do yoga, I'm not flexible!" How about instead of saying that, you start practicing yoga every day. Even if you feel like you aren't good at it. Over time, as you are 'faking that you are good at it, by doing it,' (which is what Lauryn suggests), you will find yourself getting good at Yoga, and as you practice, you will get more flexible! BOOM! Fake it til you Make it in full effect! 

#2--"Ew I do not like vegetables, I am a picky eater." (Hello, I said this so much in my lifetime, and I was just agreeing with my confused tastebuds and making them think that I didn't like vegetables) So instead of speaking all the negativity and giving power to the words, I'm going to just start trying vegetables. Over and over again, eat a little at a time, until I teach my taste buds that they are good! DONE! I'm a vegetable eater! 

I love this idea, because as a person, (and a yoga instructor), I realize how much power words have over people. I literally just chatted about this with friends, and read it in a book, but when we speak negative things over ourselves, our children, or anyone....over and over again, then we start to believe it and it becomes real in our life! So, let's do the opposite here! 

See, "FAKE IT TIL YOU MAKE IT" makes so much sense now!

My Week in Pictures, Yoga Progress, + a Giveaway!

This week my mom and niece came to visit, and we have been busy exploring various things in West, Texas, and taking lots of Yoga pictures! And along the way, I have seen how much I have grown and progressed in some of my Yoga Poses! I am so happy with my progress and strength! So, without too many words, check out my week in pictures!

This is where I first realized how much progress I have made with Yoga Poses! 

I was able to go into a forearm stand and hold it and move in it for longer than ever before! Plus I felt so brave doing it out in the open, which isn't normal. I'm usually a total wall clinger!

We drove 45min to the small town of Albany, TX. mainly for lunch because there was not much else in the town other than a pretty courthouse! 

I was shocked at the fact that I was 1. brave enough to do a handstand without a wall, and 2. able to hold it, (although for only a few shorts moments)


I just have to share these! My mom brought some of my baby-high school boxes to me, and I tried on my dress from a hometown pageant I ran in my senior year in high school (2006). It actually fit a little lose, which my mother informed me was not the case in high school! So that felt good! 


 I had to reenact the pageant! hahaha my husband thought I was crazy! 


I taught a Nuttzo Nutrition Workshop! 


I got my SpiBelt products in a local shoe store, which is pretty exciting for me!


I practiced more arm balances at my house, and was impressed with my progress. In the past I have never been able to get up on my arms and lift my feet at all in firefly. I'm excited to keep working on this and see my progress!

Well, I've officially been a month and a half with pretty much NO SUGAR

WHAT?? Is that even real life? 

It has honestly been a fun journey for me. I have enjoyed learning. Even when I "fail." AKA start eating some peanut butter and realize after several bites that it has sugar. 

I'm definitely not beating myself up over a few bites of sugar-infested peanut butter. I did however put the jar up, and will start buying any nut butters naturally. (got to keep an eye on those nutrition labels...even in the "healthy" stuff)

The Sugar Detox

Here's a few things that got me through the weeks of what they call the "Sugar Detox."

Sugar Detox-the first several weeks of giving up sugar. When your body is telling your mind..."I NEED SUGAR." Even though you don't, you are just so used to it, and maybe even addicted to it that you think you need it! 

So, a few ways I tricked my mind into soothing it's sugar cravings, is by indulging in natural sugars! 

I was leaning heavily on fruits and their natural sugars during those weeks. Having about 4 servings a day. (now I've gone to about 2 servings a day). 

I also ate almond butter (the non-sugar infested one), with an apple literally every day! It was my go-to dessert! Or afternoon sweet snack! Soooo good! 

Just because an item contains sugar doesn't mean it's bad! 

One thing I have really learned more about is reading food labels! 

To start, I first look at how many grams of sugar the item contains. Then, once I see the amount of sugar, I look to the list of ingredients! 

Just because it has sugar in it doesn't mean it's bad and I can't have it. I have to find out where that sugar is coming from! 

If the list of ingredients says SUGAR...then that straight up means it's a no go. 

There are some items that will show sugar in the nutritional facts though, and not actually contain sugar. It will just be the counting sugar from the natural sugars or fructose that is in the product. A good example of this is the World Market Sweet Potato Chips. The label shows that it has a certain amount of sugars, but the ingredient list reads sweet potatoes, oil, and salt. There you have it. It's as natural as some baked sweet potatoes at home. All that sugar is just the natural sugar in sweet potatoes, which are SO YUMMY, and a great thing to eat all the time by the way! (and that don't need added brown sugar or marshmallows! FYI! because they are so sweet naturally, why do we think we need to add more stuff to them!?!? I don't get it!)

Do I still crave sugar? 

Well yes I do at times. BUT this has been the fun part of the journey! Learning to cook and bake various treats for my family that have ZERO SUGAR!! and they are still sweet! 

Say hello to my Blueberry Muffin Recipe! Yep that's real life! Blueberry Muffins with NO SUGAR! and so yummy! 

Banana Pancakes! Yep, I can still have pancakes! and I either eat them with a nut butter on top, or pure maple syrup!

*pure maple syrup is one of the tricky ones. It may say it contains lots of sugar, but if the ingredient list says "maple syrup" then you are good to go. Just have it in moderation.

Homemade Larabar Recipe! Such a yummy treat, and super nutritious! Plus this was the first time I cooked with dates. That has been a fun learning experience. 

Strawberry-Banana Nice Cream....a great snack for you or the kids! 

I also have a sugar free cake I've been playing with the recipe for. Trying to get it right for my son's first birthday in April. I'll be sharing that in the next month or so! 

HONEY is my new best friend! 

Dates & Honey are my go-to natural sweeteners! 

But honey, honey is my new best friend! 

I use honey to sweeten mostly everything! Even my coffee! It is so good in coffee! Even if you aren't even remotely interested in going to a SUGAR FREE life, I would still encourage you to try honey in your coffee! I even order my coffee at coffee shops, Starbucks included to be sweetened with honey. Just try it. Tomorrow morning, forgo your normal regime of coffee, and try it with a spoonful of honey and maybe some milk if you prefer! It's tasty!

 So there you have it, a little about my journey, and how it's been. Honestly, sometimes I feel like I'm cheating the No Sugar lifestyle by still getting to enjoy some of these yummy things. But then I have to remember, just because I'm doing no sugar doesn't mean that I don't get to eat good, or even sweet foods. Obviously I have to be careful not to over indulge, and still eat healthy, not just take the no sugar factor as all the weight of what I'm eating. But, it's nice to still be able to have something sweet sometimes.

How Bout a Sugar Free Recipe! 

How to make a yummy Acai Bowl! Full of nutrition, and topped with natural coconut and Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts! From @brittanysuell


An Acai Bowl is a super easy and yummy snack to make for an afternoon snack, (especially when it starts to warm up), or as a late night snack or dessert. It has an ice cream like texture, but is fruity, and full of nutrition. Plus when you top this with all-natural Hemp Hearts from Manitoba Harvest, you're adding more protein and omegas to this already power packed snack! 

How to make a yummy Acai Bowl topped with Hemp Hearts!

First you will need some Acai.

They come in packs of 4 like this. You can find them in the frozen section!

Second, you will need Hemp Hearts!

Third, you will need a high powered blender and some milk of your choice.

1-Toss the frozen Acai Smoothie pack into your blender (I used one pack for one bowl). Add a little bit of milk. (I like to use coconut or almond). Blend on high. Add only a little milk at a time, and continue adding some when needed. You want the Acai to stay pretty thick, like ice cream.

2-You can add some frozen berries in with the Acai, or a frozen banana if you want a little extra flavor and more fruity goodness. 

3-Use an ice cream scoop to put it in a bowl. and top it with your HEMP HEARTS from Manitoba Harvest


*The Acai is a little tart, so you can always add a little honey to make it a tad sweeter.

Acai-one serving contains only 60 calories, 3 g of fiber, 6% iron, 15% vitamin A, 4.58mg of Omega Fatty Acids, 0g of sugar, or caffeine. It also contains other various minerals, vitamin C, and some Calcium.

How I'm Fueling My First Post-Baby Half Marathon + a Giveaway

Well race day is upon me! I'm 5 days out, and I will admit, I'm pretty dang excited, and maybe just a tad bit nervous!  Mostly I'm nervous because my last few weeks of training haven't been as great as previous trainings had been.  I ran my 11 mile run 4 weeks ago, and had intended to run my top 12 mile run the weekend I attended my Yoga training, but that just didn't happen.  So add that first weekend of not hitting my far training run on top of two different times getting sick, plus some icy weather, and the last 3 weeks of my training has been quite all over the place. 

Needless to say though, I am still super excited and about 95% confident that I am ready and will do great! I believe my finish time for my first half marathon in 2012 was 2hr49min. and then my 2nd in 2013 I didn't keep track of the time because I did intervals (walk/running) with my mom and 7 month pregnant sister. If all goes well, I think that I will PR (hit a personal record) for my half marathon time. Now, that does excite me, although I'm not all about the time either. I am just a runner to run. I don't pay attention to what time I hit each of my miles in, etc. I don't really care about that. I was not naturally a runner, so just being a long distance runner is a huge achievement for me, and at this time I'm fine with focussing on that. Maybe as I run more long races, then it will be fun to see if I can beat my previous time, but that's not what I focus on. 

This run I will definitely focus more on proper nutrition and fueling my body for the run. I recently attended a "Nutrition for Runner's" Workshop at a local running store, and it really got me thinking and realizing that I need to focus on nutrition, before, during, and after my run. 

So here's my plan and what I'll be using to Fuel My First Post-Baby Half Marathon!

Before My Race: 

-Nuun Hydration- I drink a glass of water with half a Nuun Hydration tablet in it. I love the tri-berry flavor! It is a great way to start the race hydrated, especially since I don't run holding a water bottle. 

-RX Bar- I eat half of an RX bar before my race. Now granted I run my training runs in the afternoon/evening, and the half marathon will be in the morning, so I will probably add a banana to the half of the bar as well.

RX Bars are incredible bars that are made with REAL foods, and lucky for me, NO ADDED SUGAR! They are Whole 30 approved, and most contain some of the same ingredients like egg whites, dates, almonds,and figs, plus other stuff depending on what flavor. My favorite flavor is the Blueberry RX Bar! Oh my word! Can you say INCREDIBLE! Seriously, it's like eating a healthy blueberry muffin, and I LOVE BLUEBERRY MUFFINS! 

During My Race: 

-Flip Belt-I will be using my Flip Belt, it's not really nutrition related, but it holds all my goodies in place! My phone which will be playing "The Chalene Show" Podcasts, and tracking my run with Nike+, and My RX Bar that I will eat around mile 4-6.

-Bondi Band-Once again, not actually nutrition related, but Bondi Bands are my GO-TO head bands when it comes to running, or any workout where I will be sweating a ton! Let me know if you are interested in getting some, I have a lot in stock, and I'm telling you, they are great headbands! 

-Water-What!?! Yep that's right, I'll be taking advantage of the race water stations and staying hydrated! Gotta love that H20! 

-RX Bar-Around mile 4-6 I will be eating the 2nd half of my RX Bar! 

Did I mention that RX Bars are incredible and super yummy! Packed with 12 grams of protein, GMO free, Gluten free, Soy free, Dairy free, and full of yummy nutrition! And they come in several good flavors, so no matter what running mood you are in, surely you can find one to fuel your run for the day! 

Post Race: 

-Nuun Hydration-I'll be drinking the 2nd half of my tri-berry tablet, directly after the race, and maybe another later in the day to refuel and stay hydrated from the long run. 

-Vega Team Protein-After every run/workout, I always have a post workout protein smoothie with Vega Team Protein! It's a plant based protein powder that is yummy and doesn't have all the crap in it that some protein powders have! 

Now I don't know if I said enough about these wonderful RX Bars! You know with my journey of no sugar in 2015, that I am loving on the go snacks that are packed with protein, nutrition, real foods, and NO ADDED SUGAR, oh and they need to taste good. I've have fun making homemade stuff, but these things are awesome and so great to have on hand. Plus they have a coffee flavored one, and I love coffee!

Actually this past weekend we took a quick trip to New Mexico for a day of skiing. Now it was a quick trip, so we had one day to ski, so we did not want to take time to stop and eat lunch. What #NoExcuses Means to Me!

What #NoExcuses Means to Me! With @brittanysuell & @Fitapproach I have been taking part in the #NoExcuses Challenge hosted by Sweat Pink! Basically it's a challenge to get you moving, no matter what! #NOEXCUSES right!! What better way to start the year than putting any excuses that come up aside and keep moving! Ya that's what I was trying to tell myself yesterday when I was not living in the #NoExcuses attitude! Yesterday everything was hard for me...eating well, getting active, cleaning my house....I felt so lazy! Probably had something to do with the fact that my son is hard core teething and so I was holding him most of the day! Still that was no excuse for wanting to eat everything in my pantry! Especially carbs!!! 

So today! I am writing this, not only to INSPIRE YOU, but also to MOTIVATE MYSELF! I need to remember why I choose to live a life of NO EXCUSES, and what #NoExcuses means to me! 

 What #NoExcuses Means to Me! With @brittanysuell & @Fitapproach

To me, living a life of #NoExcuses has everything to do with who I am, who I have become, and who I am continually growing to be! If I let excuses get in the way of who I am, then I wouldn't have 2015 goals, I wouldn't be on a journey (albeit hard at times) to give up sugar in 2015, and I wouldn't be kicking my butt to run multiple half marathons in 2015! None of these things are easy by any means, I guess that's what makes them goals. If goals were easy, then really there would be no point in making them because you would have nothing to try for! 

I guess you could say striving for a life of #NoExcuses is also part of the passion behind the Brittany Suell blog! If you notice at the top it quotes, "LEAVING A HEALTHY & ACTIVE LIFESTYLE LEGACY!" This quote means so much to me, and I would love for you to adopt it as well and let it mean a lot to you! It drives who I am as a woman, a blogger, a wife, a mom, a person! No matter what, we all leave a legacy! Whether for thousands of people, or just one. Even if my legacy is left for just one person, I want it to be a legacy that means something to them! I believe that when you live a healthy and active lifestyle, then you can live life to your fullest! When you are healthy you can do so many things in life, you can achieve so much, it sets you up for success in all areas! Therefore, I am striving to live a healthy and active lifestyle, so that with those around me: family, children, friends, acquaintances, even strangers in some instances can be impacted to do the same! I WANT THAT TO BE MY LEGACY!

So....what does #NoExcuses mean to means that I am, "LEAVING A HEALTHY & ACTIVE LIFESTYLE LEGACY" by pushing myself past my whiney limits, and going further, and being all that I can be!

Nutrition While Nursing + A Workout for Pregnancy & Post-Prenancy & a Mommy+Baby GIVEAWAY #MommyMonday

Nutrition while nursing, a workout that's great while you are pregnant, or post-pregnancy, plus a mommy & Baby Giveaway on #MommyMonday at You may have read that I am training for a half marathon! Wahoo! I am less than six weeks out, and yesterday I ran my furthest yet, 10miles! Which is also the furthest I've run since having my son, 9+ months ago! I am also currently still nursing my son, and don't have any plans to discontinue doing so at this point.  Now I have heard many people worry and fret about working out too hard, or training for something while nursing because they didn't want it to affect their milk supply. So, I felt like today, since it's #MommyMonday, it would be great to chat about this! 

Yes, you do lose calories when you are breastfeeding, they estimate 500calories per feeding.  And yes, you shouldn't go on some extreme diet where you are eating only 1,000 calories a day, or taking diet pills.  All this would affect your own nutrition, which would have an affect on your milk supply, and diet pills could be bad for the baby all together, so let's just stay away from them.  BUT, I don't think this is an excuse to eat everything in site, or to henge on junk food/high calorie snacks, even if you are training for a race.  So, here's a few small tips on how to have good NUTRITION WHILE NURSING, specifically when you are working out a lot, and/or training for a race: 

1) Eat full meals! This does't mean just eat a sandwich. This means eat a meal that has lean protein, good fats, some carbs, and lots of yummy veggies that are full of goodness! 

-This is what I ate before I ran today. Almost an entire chicken breast, sweet potato chips (real ones! The only ingredient is sweet potatoes), and half of an avocado.  Honestly, this would've been even better if I would've had a nice green veggie with it, but it was a late lunch, so I was a slacker.

2) Make sure you have good pre-/post training fuel that restocks a lot of nutrients that you burned off while sweating!

 -My newest favorite post run fuel is a LARABAR. These things are super yummy bars, and not like normal bars that are full of all sorts of stuff, including lots of sugar! Nope, these things are made with what's in them! Check out the ingredient list on this Cashew Cookie Larabar, which is the exact one I had today. They are naturally sweetened with dates, and have other great nutrients packed into them!

3) Drink a lot of water. If you are nursing, then you may have experienced the "OMG! I'm dying of thirst all of a sudden. My mouth literally feels like a desert, and if I don't get water quick I'm done." feeling while nursing.  So, this means when working out/training, always have water with you. Drink plenty of water BEFORE, and AFTER working out! 

Pregnancy & Post-Pregnancy Workout

Now, while we are on the subject of nursing, and pregnancy, I thought I would share with you a great workout that is good for while you are pregnant, post-pregnancy, or hey any time! I do these workouts now. I'm just saying though, when you are pregnant or recovering from giving birth, obviously you can't worry about your abs much, so why not focus on your legs, and specifically your arms! You can definitely still tone those babies while you are prego! 

What you need: Elastic Band 

10 sets of each exercise x 3

This is a great workout that can be done at your own pace, while pregnant, or after your doctor releases you to workout again post-pregnancy.  

My motto is...My belly may be big, but my arms can still be tone!

Just kidding! but I think I might adopt that next time I get pregnant, I mean why not have nice arms, and legs for that matter!

Having available is also so helpful for me at home because having a baby, I am not able to get out and go to the Yoga Studio or gym classes as much as I would like.  This makes it so much easier to still get my sweat on and take yoga classes from various instructors.

SPEAKING OF THE INSTRUCTORS..... has awesome instructors.  Each class I have taken, has had nothing but professional instructors, but it's also great because they have a wide variety of instructors, so you can take classes with various styles.  Obviously, I love the Yoga classes, since I am a Yogi at heart, so I appreciate different styles and techniques that Yoga Instructors carry, and I enjoy learning from them.  Don't worry though, if you aren't a has way more to offer than just Yoga!


No matter what kind of workout you are looking to get, they've got it, and they are adding to it often.  They have cardio classes, strength, classes that use weights, classes that have specific muscle focal points. Plus, whether you have 20 minutes or over an hour to spend working out, I have seen classes that offer it all.


On Monday night, I put my baby to sleep, and my husband was working in the garage, and I felt like I needed a little me time before getting to work on our at-home business orders. So, I found a 20 minute Yoga workout! It was just what I needed at that time.  Just enough to get my heart going, and a small sweat on, but still left enough time to get some work done! Plus, I did it in my bedroom, I didn't even have to leave my house!

Although I would say I already drink a lot of water, having this challenge in the back of my mind, and a place on my fridge where I mark off my eating/drinking servings, really helps motivate me! Knowing that I am trying to get to a certain amount each day keeps it in the back of my mind. So instead of getting Sweet Tea somewhere, I may decide to just get water so that it adds to my water servings each day! I especially love this with the fruits and veggies too, because it really drives what I eat throughout the day, and I love that!

So, maybe think about challenging yourself during the holiday season to eat a certain number of freebies and drink LOTS of water!
