Well, I've officially been a month and a half with pretty much NO SUGAR!
WHAT?? Is that even real life?
It has honestly been a fun journey for me. I have enjoyed learning. Even when I "fail." AKA start eating some peanut butter and realize after several bites that it has sugar.
I'm definitely not beating myself up over a few bites of sugar-infested peanut butter. I did however put the jar up, and will start buying any nut butters naturally. (got to keep an eye on those nutrition labels...even in the "healthy" stuff)
The Sugar Detox
Here's a few things that got me through the weeks of what they call the "Sugar Detox."
Sugar Detox-the first several weeks of giving up sugar. When your body is telling your mind..."I NEED SUGAR." Even though you don't, you are just so used to it, and maybe even addicted to it that you think you need it!
So, a few ways I tricked my mind into soothing it's sugar cravings, is by indulging in natural sugars!
I was leaning heavily on fruits and their natural sugars during those weeks. Having about 4 servings a day. (now I've gone to about 2 servings a day).
I also ate almond butter (the non-sugar infested one), with an apple literally every day! It was my go-to dessert! Or afternoon sweet snack! Soooo good!
Just because an item contains sugar doesn't mean it's bad!
One thing I have really learned more about is reading food labels!
To start, I first look at how many grams of sugar the item contains. Then, once I see the amount of sugar, I look to the list of ingredients!
Just because it has sugar in it doesn't mean it's bad and I can't have it. I have to find out where that sugar is coming from!
If the list of ingredients says SUGAR...then that straight up means it's a no go.
There are some items that will show sugar in the nutritional facts though, and not actually contain sugar. It will just be the counting sugar from the natural sugars or fructose that is in the product. A good example of this is the World Market Sweet Potato Chips. The label shows that it has a certain amount of sugars, but the ingredient list reads sweet potatoes, oil, and salt. There you have it. It's as natural as some baked sweet potatoes at home. All that sugar is just the natural sugar in sweet potatoes, which are SO YUMMY, and a great thing to eat all the time by the way! (and that don't need added brown sugar or marshmallows! FYI! because they are so sweet naturally, why do we think we need to add more stuff to them!?!? I don't get it!)
Do I still crave sugar?
Well yes I do at times. BUT this has been the fun part of the journey! Learning to cook and bake various treats for my family that have ZERO SUGAR!! and they are still sweet!
Say hello to my Blueberry Muffin Recipe! Yep that's real life! Blueberry Muffins with NO SUGAR! and so yummy!
Banana Pancakes! Yep, I can still have pancakes! and I either eat them with a nut butter on top, or pure maple syrup!
*pure maple syrup is one of the tricky ones. It may say it contains lots of sugar, but if the ingredient list says "maple syrup" then you are good to go. Just have it in moderation.
Homemade Larabar Recipe! Such a yummy treat, and super nutritious! Plus this was the first time I cooked with dates. That has been a fun learning experience.
Strawberry-Banana Nice Cream....a great snack for you or the kids!
I also have a sugar free cake I've been playing with the recipe for. Trying to get it right for my son's first birthday in April. I'll be sharing that in the next month or so!
HONEY is my new best friend!
Dates & Honey are my go-to natural sweeteners!
But honey, honey is my new best friend!
I use honey to sweeten mostly everything! Even my coffee! It is so good in coffee! Even if you aren't even remotely interested in going to a SUGAR FREE life, I would still encourage you to try honey in your coffee! I even order my coffee at coffee shops, Starbucks included to be sweetened with honey. Just try it. Tomorrow morning, forgo your normal regime of coffee, and try it with a spoonful of honey and maybe some milk if you prefer! It's tasty!

So there you have it, a little about my journey, and how it's been. Honestly, sometimes I feel like I'm cheating the No Sugar lifestyle by still getting to enjoy some of these yummy things. But then I have to remember, just because I'm doing no sugar doesn't mean that I don't get to eat good, or even sweet foods. Obviously I have to be careful not to over indulge, and still eat healthy, not just take the no sugar factor as all the weight of what I'm eating. But, it's nice to still be able to have something sweet sometimes.

How Bout a Sugar Free Recipe!
An Acai Bowl is a super easy and yummy snack to make for an afternoon snack, (especially when it starts to warm up), or as a late night snack or dessert. It has an ice cream like texture, but is fruity, and full of nutrition. Plus when you top this with all-natural Hemp Hearts from Manitoba Harvest, you're adding more protein and omegas to this already power packed snack!
How to make a yummy Acai Bowl topped with Hemp Hearts!
First you will need some Acai.
They come in packs of 4 like this. You can find them in the frozen section!
Second, you will need Hemp Hearts!

Third, you will need a high powered blender and some milk of your choice.
1-Toss the frozen Acai Smoothie pack into your blender (I used one pack for one bowl). Add a little bit of milk. (I like to use coconut or almond). Blend on high. Add only a little milk at a time, and continue adding some when needed. You want the Acai to stay pretty thick, like ice cream.
2-You can add some frozen berries in with the Acai, or a frozen banana if you want a little extra flavor and more fruity goodness.
3-Use an ice cream scoop to put it in a bowl. and top it with your HEMP HEARTS from Manitoba Harvest!
*The Acai is a little tart, so you can always add a little honey to make it a tad sweeter.
