The Regrets of a Pregnant Woman....

Wow....it's been a little over a week since I found out I was pregnant!  Pregnancy Announcement: The Regrets of a Pregnant Woman

Anyways I will say that even just this past week has been super hard on me! I have had zero energy, and have felt....like crap! I have had no desire to cook food, and a huge desire just to go out and grab fast food when I'm hungry. 

I have been good at eating fruit when I need a snack. Either that or saltine crackers. It keeps coming to mind for me though what my doctor said when I went to my 10 week appointment for my son Zander's pregnancy. My husband asked how important nutrition was at this time.....(we had several arguments over my lack of nutrition in the first trimester of that pregnancy), and the doctor said...."Right now, it's really just about surviving and eating what she can." Ahhhh.....such a sigh of relief. So I am trying to keep that in mind during this time as well....although it is super hard. 

I will say I have truly been craving and wanting cereal! 

Now, if you don't remember, back in January 2015, I made the commitment to go SUGAR FREE!! That's right, I gave up sugar all together! In drinks, in foods, period. I was done with sugar. And it has been a great year so far! I have loved this lifestyle of not worrying about eating sugar and having that guilty feeling after a long weekend. I have even had fun in the kitchen trying out new recipes. Right now though, the last thing I want to do is be in the kitchen. 

And when I'm craving cereal, and EVERY SINGLE CEREAL has sugar in it, I won't lie, the Regrets of a Pregnant Woman start coming out. 

Like did I really commit to that? 

Doesn't pregnancy dismiss that? 

Surely all my followers would understand!? 

But no, I am staying committed! Even through these pregnancy cravings! I have loved this sugar free lifestyle and I knew if I got pregnant it would be hard. BUT, I want this to continue being my life even after 2015. Many have asked if I will stay sugar free after the year is up. (My original commitment was the year 2015). And my answer is YES I will stay sugar free! 

For now though, I will keep begging my husband to cook for me while I lay on the couch, or take me out when he just can't do it. And I will keep working hard at staying fit as well! I want this pregnancy to be a fit one! And I know if I stay away from cereal and all the other sugar cravings, I will not gain 70lbs like I did in my first pregnancy!

I'll be sharing more on my desire to have a fit pregnancy next week, but for now, I will say that it has been so helpful to have the #BOSUStrong Challenge pushing me to be committed and stay fit! I love challenges with Fit Approach! They are inspiring and fun! 

Plus my little man loves working out on the BOSU with me too! Plus if you include valslides, or paper plates under your feet along with a Bosu, you are getting an incredible workout!! That's what I did today for some side lunges. I put valslides under my feet and slid them out and back in for lunges! It was super hard!!!

HAPPY NATIONAL COFFEE DAY + a GIVEAWAY

  • A coffee shop is a good place to meet a new or old friend
  • Coffee takes away the pressure to always hang out with people around meal times! It gives you something to do while chatting with friends, but not having to stuff your face while doing so! 
  • Even the idea of being at a coffee shop alone, but knowing others are drinking it too....makes you feel good! 

4) I love the taste! 

  • At Home: flavored coffee+half-n-half+honey
  • At a coffee shop: house coffee+honey+steamed half-n-half
  • When I need to: I'll drink it black

5) Coffee makes inspirational quotes and t-shirts more fun! (some of my favs)

How I Stay Balanced When Life is Crazy...

Yep I admit it....life has been crazy the past couple of weeks!  I literally unpacked my suitcase a week and a half after I got home from vacation. I've been busy spending time with my son and enjoying some much needed play dates after being gone for almost two weeks. I feel like I can barely keep up with cleaning my house, all in the midst of teaching Yoga & Fit4Mom classes and hosting Freezer Meal Workshops.

So you wonder....How do I stay balanced when life is crazy....

There are several things that help me through crazy, high-paced, or even stressful times. 

1) Yoga Balancing Poses

When doing Balancing Yoga Poses, you have to focus! It takes not only strength, but mental focus. So when I practice balancing poses, my thoughts go away from the craziness of life, and I am forced to focus on holding the pose, and keeping a steady breath. This brings relief to a crazy life, and allows me to clear my mind of all that it has been bogged down with.

2) Stay Grounded with Pluggz

Stay Grounded with Pluggz! How I Stay Balanced when life gets crazy!

What are Pluggz?? Pluggz are shoes (super cute shoes) that have grounding techniques that connect you to the earth and enable an electrical connection and harmony that our body needs. 3) Have a good book with me always!

Yep I just started reading this book. And as a matter of fact, I just adopted this concept of staying balanced. I think taking time to read a book in your spare time versus getting lost in your phone or other technology can definitely keep us balanced. It quiets our mind, and in this case is a great way for self-development and growth. 

This book is all about taking advantage of our "Fringe" hours, or spare hours throughout the day. So that's what I am doing by keeping a book on hand with me. Now I just have to fight the urge to be on my phone, and instead choose to pick up the book when I have free time. 

4) Freezer Meals

This concept has been a life saver over the past few months. As you may know I host local and long distance Freezer Meal Workshops! You can get more info on that HERE.

Having healthy meals prepped ahead of time and ready to toss in the crockpot in the morning or at lunch is so handy! Plus when it's time to eat my home smells incredible! And all the meals are amazing! Especially my latest menu of soups and stews! Oh, but be sure you REMEMBER TO PLUG IN THE CROCKPOT! Yep, that happened yesterday...needless to say, we went out for dinner!  

5) Keep Going!

Just keep going! How I Stay Balanced when life gets crazy!

Whatever you do, just keep going! Give yourself a high-five, take a couple of minutes to breathe, and remember why you do what you do, and soon enough, the craziness will chill some! JUST KEEP GOING! You can do it! 

Surround yourself with people that will push and encourage you to keep going when life gets hard! Join a #FitFam, and be encouraged by them, but just keep going!

How I #LiveInPrana Even on Vacation!

Yep, I made it back from vacation! We had a blast! Let me just say it's super fun to stay kind of local (about 4 hours from our home) and explore the state/area that you live in for all it's worth! We stayed about 50minutes from two major cities, Austin & San Antonio, Texas, and we got to enjoy those, plus so many more throughout our week.  One things for sure, my Prana clothes got me through the entire week!

We started our vacation by spending a night in Waco, Texas. We got to see the Fixer Upper's store (from HGTV), plus explore some fun around the city. And let me just say these Meme pants are my absolute favorite! I'll be honest, when I first got these I wasn't sure about the Cargo pockets on the side, but they are my fave! They add a uniqueness to the skinny jean! The fabric that these pants are made out of are incredible, and they are flexible and easy to move in! I can easily go from dressed up, to cute and casual, to all out hiking or handstanding all in the same pants!

Once we got to Austin, I had to take advantage of the FREE YOGA DAY! So I grabbed my husband for a Vinyasa Flow Class that ended up being the HOTTEST Hot Yoga Class I have ever taken, at Black Swan Yoga Westlake. Which was a great studio with awesome instructors! I enjoyed the class a ton. I also got lots of laughs seeing my husband slip and slide, and be drenched in sweat. (He's not a Yogi, so this was a true challenge for him). I on the other hand was decked out in Prana gear, and ready to sweat!

I wore my favorite outfit from their Spring collection!

  • The Ambrosia Tank, which was perfect for hot Yoga. It has super cute cutouts in it, which made it totally breathable. Plus the also band around the waste keeps it in place while also allowing for a flowy top. 
  • The Roxanne Capri in the orange pixel print. These are seriously some of my favorite leggings! I get so many compliments on them, and they are super flexible for all sorts of workouts.
  • I also used my Prana Yoga Mat which was a great companion for the sweat fest class we attended! Although myself and my mat were both drenched in sweat, I had no fear of slipping and hurting myself as I held poses.
  • You may also notice my Yoga Mat Rap, it's Prana too!

We also took some adventures while we were in the area, and found 2 amazing natural springs that are including in the Top 10 [Natural] Swimming Holes in Texas. The one pictured above is Jacob's Well! It's not only a natural spring that you can hike around and swim in, but there's also a 30 ft. whole in the spring that you can jump into! My amazing Prana swimsuit was incredible for this sort of adventure! Not only did I feel super cute, but the Tobago Bottoms which claim to be "a secure fit [that] will withstand heavy waves" measured up! While climbing up rocks to the top, and even jumping in the water I felt secure and these things stayed put! The same went for the Taala Top, when I jumped in I definitely expected to have to readjust my top before submerging from the water, but nope, to my surprise my top stayed in place!

Then....one of my favorite moments of my week happened! I got to take an Aerial Silks Class at 4 Elements Austin. Wow was this a rush! Seriously such an invigorating experience. The challenge that you get when you do a Silks class is so fun! And felt so good to be able to achieve and hold some of these moves. And once again, my all time favorite Prana leggings got me through it! These are the Gabi Leggings are amazing. The seems create a flattering look, plus the Chakara Performance Fabric is different. It's more of a cotton feel vs. a spandex. I love them! They are so comfortable and super cute on! They are most definitely my go-to's! I really need to get them in the other color!

We also played Top Golf, enjoyed a morning on the Tennis Court, and spent an entire day wine tasting at some amazing Texas Hill Country Wineries! We were so impressed by how much Texas had to offer!

Then I finished the week by joining my mom for some early morning Yoga and a mid-morning run. Plus we got to enjoy some amazingly cool weather. The first that I have felt in Texas, but we could definitely tell that Fall is on the way, so I pulled out my Ergo Leggings which are super stylish, majorly athletic and a great fit legging from the new Prana Fall line. And I had to throw on my  Ginger Top to stay comfortable in the cool weather!

Finding Your Life Song & Living It!

Have you ever sat back and really thought about who you are? What you are passionate about? And why you do the things you do? What drives your intrinsic motivation? What gives you energy to keep going even when you are worn out? What makes you say yes to some things and no to others? What is the WHY behind the things you do? What is your life song?  I feel like over the past few years, and especially in the past year, this has been an ongoing theme in my life. And it wasn't on purpose either. It started with becoming a mom, then rebranding my blog and trying to decide what I wanted to stand on when it came to my blog, then from their, my life has followed. 

Then without even knowing it I was going through the process of Finding Your Life Song & Living It! 

So today, I'm not going to give you some step-by-step on how to figure out what your life song is. I'm just going to encourage you, go on the journey with yourself. Take time for yourself to evaluate your life, your lifestyle, the places you thrive in, the people that lift you up, the things that drive you. 

Go on a journey to FIND YOUR LIFE SONG! 

Then, as you figure out what that is for you, and as you start living it, I believe that you will be happier, and others will begin to notice that as well. And as you are true to your life song, it will become apparent to others what your life song is! 

Last night was eye opening and encouraging for me. When my friend sent my a photo of this adorable shirt. I thought she was just showing it to me, but she said that this was my "Life Shirt." 

That was such a sweet thing to me, and made me realize that what I'm doing, how I'm living, and staying true to my life song is being seen by others, and that to me is AMAZING!

Yoga is for EveryBODY

Each time I attend a Yoga Training, I am renewed with excitement and passion for what I do. I love being a Yoga Instructor. I love being able to guide people through a class of self-awareness, challenging their muscles, releasing stress, moving their joints, and ending in a time of reflection or meditation. Yoga is all around just good for us. It's good for our muscles, our bones, out joints. It's good for strengthening our core and keeping our posture upright and strong as we age. It's good for our mental clarity and focus. Yoga is good for maintaining and relieving stress. Yoga teaches us that it's okay to just be, in a world where we are constantly going and doing. Yoga makes us look inward and reminds us of who we really are.  Yoga is needed, and in my opinion, Yoga is for EveryBODY!

Whether you are young or old, Yoga can be good for you. 

Yoga is for EveryBODY! We all need it! It helps to strengthen our muscles and joints as we ago, plus helps to keep us stress free and calm in such a busy world!

There are two main reasons I will focus on today, to make my point of why Yoga is for EveryBODY! 

1) We are all getting older, and Yoga helps us maintain a healthy body, with strong muscles and healthy joints.

WE ALL NEED YOGA! 

As we age there are several things that occur.....

We start to get stiff, we lose muscle and bone density, we stop moving as much (in general), our posture begins to slouch, we begin to feel more pain overall.

Yoga helps all of these things. 

One of the things that I love about Yoga the most is that you move the joints a lot. A lot of the moves use movement that we use in everyday life. Take chair pose for example. It's teaching you to sit back in a chair, or get up out of a chair using your core. Even the simple movement of extending your arms up is amazingly helpful as we age. How many times do we reach out or above us to grab something?  So in Yoga you are constantly lubricating those joints, which helps with stiffness that occurs as you age. This loosens up our joints, making it easier and more free to move to do our every day activities. 

Plus with Yoga you do balancing poses. This helps as well, because as you age you begin to lose muscle mass, and strength, which is a big reason why you hear of elderly people falling often. Working on balance and stability will help strengthen those muscles that keep you upright. 

So basically what I"m saying here, is Yoga helps you live your best life! It helps you Leave a Healthy & Active Lifestyle Legacy! I am so passionate about creating a healthy and active lifestyle for YOURSELF so that you are able to enjoy life to the fullest, for the longest possible time. When you are healthy, you are able to do things with your children and grandchildren! You are able to experience life with them, and pass that value on to them! Yoga helps you do that! Yoga can literally be maneuvered to fit your body. If you are seeing crazy poses on Instagram, and you think you can't do those....that's okay, you probably can't. But if you go to a well run class, those aren't the poses you will be doing. You will be doing basic Yoga Poses, and the instructor should lead you to find the version that fits your body! Fit the pose to your body, not your body to the pose. There are always options and variations for Yoga Poses!

2) In a world that is constantly going and has so many areas of stimuli and stress, Yoga calms the mind and teaches us to just be. 

WE ALL NEED YOGA!

Seriously....how often do you just sit and be quite, and do nothing. UM.....Like never! 

In each of my Yoga classes we spend a couple of minutes in the beginning, and about double or triple that time at the end just being. We focus inward, on our breath, on ourselves, sometimes on a specific word or phrase, or characteristic of ourselves. And let me just say.....THAT IS HARD FOR PEOPLE TO DO. 

Yoga is for EveryBODY! We all need it! It helps to strengthen our muscles and joints as we ago, plus helps to keep us stress free and calm in such a busy world!

Our world is so, go-go-go, that when we are asked to sit and just be, it is so hard for us. It can actually become an emotional place for us. If we tend to hide or smother our emotions, and fill our lives with busyness, then if we spend even just a couple of moments where our minds and emotions are able to go to those places where we are smothering, then it can begin to bring those emotions us and make us start to face them. IT'S A GOOD THING! 

Yoga is therapeutic because of just this. Yoga is special to me not only because I know it's a good workout and it tones my body, but because in two of the hardest places of my life, Yoga has brought renewal and healing for me.

In 2009 after losing my brother to a car accident was the first time I started doing Yoga. I remember every time we laid in the final relaxation pose, I would get emotional. I didn't understand it at first, and really I wanted to run from it, but I stuck it out and it was good and helpful for me. 

A similar thing, in 2013 after miscarrying, each time I went to Yoga, rushing in from a busy day at work, it gave me that quiet time I needed and wanted for myself. I appreciated time to just stop thinking about everything and everyone else in the world, and spend an hour focussed on just me! I craved that time, and appreciated it during that healing period for me. 


So get convinced! Yoga is good for you! Yoga is for EveryBODY, and we need to be doing Yoga! It keeps us healthy mentally and physically!

Basically I like to think of it as taking care of my body which is already aging. So that as I age I still feel good, am strong, and have full mobility of my limbs!

1) It builds bone density- poses like this and other arm balances build upper body strength due to the weight that is put on the arms and shoulders, which helps to increase bone density.

Long Distance Freezer Meal Workshop

Wow, since I started doing more of my own Freezer Meals and prepping healthy food for my family it has made my life so much easier! Taking just a couple of hours out of my day to prep meals, that are hearty and healthy and ready to be cooked in the crockpot is an amazing use of my time. It really enables me to have more time in the evenings with my family rather than scavenging in the kitchen trying to get dinner cooked in time and missing out on time I could be spending with my family. I absolutely love it.  Now I know I shared with you all about how I have begun hosting Healthy Freezer Meal Workshops for my local people! It has gone over great! Because what's better than prepping healthy meals for your family? Prepping them with other people! Enjoying the company of others while you are super productive and get things done that will make life so much easier!

Level 4 Yoga Certification & Tips on Taking the ACE Group Fitness Instructor Exam

Wow! What a long week it has been!  I have been back from 5 intense fitness training days for a couple of days now, but I decided to take it easy and rest up. While also catching up with emails, etc. So here I am. Today it's back to go mode! That includes blogging, working my biz-ness hard core, and finally cleaning my house! 

So I shared with you last week about me heading out for my Level 4 Yoga Certification with Yoga Fit. It was by far the longest and most intense training I have done. It was 4 days of Yoga. Starting at 7AM-6PM. So they were for sure long days, and I got super spoiled to my Starbucks every morning!

This training was a lot about the history of Yoga and Yoga Philosophy. I learned Sanskrit, the original language of Yoga, and so much more. I also learned some new poses, got to try out some new binds, along with finally nailing some arm balances and inversions that I have tried to do in the past! Plus I met and connected with a lot of amazing Yogis, which is always so much fun! 


I also spent a good chunk of my time away studying for the ACE Group Fitness Certification Exam which I took on Monday. Man that test was stressing me out. I cam home with some mouth ulcers which I attribute to the pre-test stress I was having. Now I have an undergraduate and masters degree, but I think I was more stressed about this test. Honestly just the thought of having to pay $200 more to retest was stressing me out. BUT I spent a lot of time studying, red through the entire red book, and took some practice quizzes....and wouldn't you know....I PASSED! 

TIPS ON TAKING THE ACE GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR EXAM

 

BE AWESOME AND SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS WHO ARE PLANNING TO TAKE THE EXAM! 

So I thought since I am now officially a certified Group Fitness Instructor, that I would share with you some Tips on Taking the ACE Group Fitness Instructor Exam

-I studied! 

-I red through the chapters in the red book that comes with the study materials, and answered all of the study questions in the study guide

-sidenote: I also read back through those study questions again, and semi-quizzed myself with the multiple choice questions

TIPS ON TAKING THE ACE GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR EXAM

-I studied the Essentials of Exercise Science Flashcards. These went with the white book, which I started the first chapter of back in April, and never picked up again. The flashcards were enough. Plus I made sure I knew all of the major muscles. I hope to go back through the Essentials Book later on, just to learn more about anatomy, etc. 

-Surprisingly there was not as much about anatomy on there as you might think, so don't stress about that part. Do know the terms that reference how the body or movement is moving. (i.e. frontal, sagital plane, dorsiflexion, planter flexion, flexion, extension....those basics)

-The test focussed a lot of class outline, group instructional methods, teaching styles, etc. Focus on these things: 

  • Cueing
  • Teaching techniques
  • Learning Styles
  • Feedback 
  • Monitoring Methods
  • Class Programming

-The test also had several questions on working out in various weather conditions 

-There were also several on liability, so be sure to study that! 

Now the BEST thing I did before taking the exam was...I bought a $10 study app versus the $50 practice test that ACE offers. It was such a great investment! It's called Pocket Prep for the ACE GFI Exam! 

TIPS ON TAKING THE ACE GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR EXAM

The app is $10 and it's called POCKET PREP FOR GROUP FIT! 

This seriously helped me so much! It has 300 questions and it rotates through them! There are several options on making your quizzes personal, like focussing on certain parts of the test that you seem to struggle with the most, etc. Plus it shows you at the end the categories that you need to work on more. 

After taking the test I realized how much the quizzes from the app really helped me. I realized relying on those were potentially taking a risk, but it mostly focussed on class design, teaching styles, liability, etc. which is mainly what was on the test. And the way the app worded the questions was very similar to the way they did it on the test. So I would for sure suggest this to anyone taking the exam. (And they have these apps for all sorts of tests/certifications)

DIY Yoga Bolster

Yay, OMG, I am so excited to share a DIY Post with you all!  A little bit about me, I am a mad crafter, and actually that's how I started out blogging. I would share tons of DIY posts. Over the past couple of years though, my DIY efforts have gone into the remodeling of our house, then after having my son, I have slowed down on the crafting. Usually though when we have specific functions or parties that I want to craft for then I'm all about it. Like for my son's birthday. I made decorations, banners, t-shirts, etc. I love it, but lately just haven't found much time for it. 

So, in preparation for 5-6days away for my Yoga Fit Level 4 Yoga Training, and taking my ACE Group Fitness Exam, I decided I needed a little DIY in my life. Plus at the Yoga Training which is 4 days of 7AM-6PM, I will be sitting on the floor the entire time. That calls for needing my very own bolster, and what better way than to make one!

This was super easy, and very little sewing, and took me about 30 minutes to make. I used this tutorial from Sew It Love It. 

I could've made it look more square like a store-bought bolster, but I decided I wanted this to be a quick and easy project so I went with this style.

I love the way it turned out. It's cute, plus it's very full and hard like normal bolsters, so it provides the support I need while using it during Yoga poses.

Here's a few of my favorite poses to use a bolster in, and how it benefits my body in the pose.

In Child's Pose, using the Bolster allows your body to fully surrender, and release tension. 

Here's a tip on getting more fully into the pose from Yoga Journal:

"As you rest here, invite gravity to pull the legs deeply toward the earth to release any lingering tension in the hips and thighs. Soften the muscles of the lower back and release the tailbone toward the heels. At the same time, spread your shoulder blades apart as your arms dangle like vines toward the floor."

When this pose may normally be hard to get into, the bolster allows support to help soften the knees, and open the hips, groin, and thighs. It allows for you to relax in the pose and let your body slowly fall deeper into it while you rest into your bolster. 


 I'm not sure the total cost of the project, probably a lot with all of the stuffing I used. (stuffing isn't cheap). But while researching various tutorials, I saw people stuffing theirs with old clothes, towels, etc. In case you are interested in making your own.  

I used all supplies that I had at home, so the stuffing was from old pillows I no longer use. And the fabric, I was so excited to finally use. It was from my 2009 month stay in Japan when my sister lived there. I have had it and never used it. It's super cute, I love the gold specks in it, and it is quilted, so it already had a little padding in it!

Setting Goals & Creating New Habits!

Recently we visited East Texas and had dinner plans with our family. My mother in law was trying to decide what to cook and asked, "What vegetables do y'all like?" My husband looked at me and changed the question to say, "What vegetables don't you like? " When he said that, it hit me. I am a totally DIFFERENT person than I used to be! 

Now although it seems like I have been like this for a while, it really began shortly after my son was born. Even as a prego, I ate lots of crap and sweets...I mean I gained around 70lbs. (but that's a whole 'mother story in itself.) Seriously though, after I had my son I became a whole new person. I began trying eating eating every vegetable there is. I made better health choices in general, then I made the huge choice to give up sugar in January! 

I can confidently say...

I am the healthiest I have ever been!

So when did the switch happen!?! 

What made we create new habits and go after my goals of being a healthy and active mom!?

There are a few things through my experience that I fully believe in. I believe that when you have these things in place, that you are setting yourself up to achieve your goals and set new habits!

Setting Goals and making new habits! My top 3 ways to do it successfully!

1) Set clear, attainable goals!

2) Have a support system! 

-This may be a partner that is going after the same goals. In that case, it is extremely helpful. Even through having running partners I have seen huge success in it. On nights when I don't feel like getting out and running, their drive pushes me to, and I'm always happier afterwards. 

Setting Goals and making new habits! My top 3 ways to do it successfully!

-This could even be a spouse or someone, in addition to the partner mentioned above. You need someone that is going to support and help you in achieving your goals. Someone that is going to be your cheerleader, and believe in you when you don't believe in yourself. THIS IS HUGE! When creating new habits, it never fails we go through slumps where we don't think we can push through and change! We need support from someone who loves us and wants to see us achieve our goals!

3) You need a reason to achieve your goals! Find your "Why"!

-When the going gets tough, you have to know what the point in all of it really is! Why are you pushing yourself, why are you changing your ways, why are you doing things that seem so foreign for your mind and body? You need to be able to come back to your WHY and find renewed motivation!

For me, I knew that I had the desire to LEAVE A HEALTHY AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLE LEGACY for my son. And I knew for that to happen, it would start with me getting healthy! Not just a good size on the outside, but healthy from the inside out! And I know that I am. Throughout that time, the motivation of having my son, and knowing the things I wanted to teach him motivated me especially in the eating department. It motivated me to buy real food, to eat healthy vegetables that prior to this time I had never eaten. Plus I had my husband to support me! He has supported me in my dreams to stay home from an 8-5 job and go after my dreams of teaching health and fitness. I am a living example of setting goals and changing habits by implementing those 3 tips listed above!

So now my newest habit I want to change: 

I want to get up earlier in the mornings! 

-I know that if I get up when my husband does, around 6:30AM, or even at 7AM when he is leaving for work, that I could have such a successful morning while our son sleeps. 

-Plus I will be able to get so much done before my morning workouts. On mornings when I start productively, I feel like my entire day is productive. When I start slow, it is hard for me to find the motivation to get started at all. 

-So, I know that my husband will support me, and my drive will be the fact that I have so many responsibilities that lack in getting done or being successful when I don't take advantage of morning time. That's #2 & 3 from the tips above. 

-Tip #1---- I will wake up by 7AM, at least 3 days a week, and do things like work my business, blog, or clean my house. ALL WHILE DRINKING COFFEE OF COURSE! So there you have it, my clear, attainable goals! Let's do this! Let's create a new habit!

Are We Snacking Our Kids to an Unhealthy Lifestyle?

Look around you. In our American lifestyle, isn't it obvious that we love to SNACK! Whether you look to the grocery store, the food stands in the mall, or even the cheap $1 menus at fast food restaurants. We are taught, trained to snack throughout our life.

I would even dare to say that having just 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) is abnormal in the American Lifestyle.

So is snacking really helpful for us? It seems that as soon as our brain is even slightly triggered to be hungry, then we stuff our mouths with a snack. Whether it's healthy or not, is it okay? Should we actually let our body feel hungry for a while before eating? Maybe practice a little self-control, and just drink some water instead. (Not drink high calorie drinks that are basically a snack in themselves). 

So where does this idea of having to snack come from? Why don't we allow our bodies to get hungry? 

If you are a parent, or have been around parents, you might already know the answer to this. Not only does our culture train us to snack while we shop, drive around town, or go to work, but I believe it starts even earlier than that. I believe we are taught as children to snack! 

So I pose the question: 

Are we snacking our kids to an unhealthy lifestyle?

 

Now let me preface. I pose this question as a conversation starter. Not as an expert on the subject, just as a mom whose goal is to LEAVE A HEALTHY & ACTIVE LIFESTYLE LEGACY FOR MY CHILDREN. As a mom I have an opinion, and I would love to hear what you think! 

So, with that said, early in with my son I made the choice to not give him snacks a lot. In my head I realized, I wanted to feed him good, hearty meals, so that he didn't need to snack. More than that, I didn't want to use a snack as something to occupy him, the idea is similar to not letting him watch a movie on my phone just to keep him quiet (that's another topic in itself), but you get the idea.

I made this choice because I want him to have a healthy relationship with food. I want food to be something he uses for FUEL for his body! I don't want it to be something he does out of boredom, or feels like every time we go somewhere we he has to have a snack. I can see some of those bad habits in myself, and I didn't want to start him off that way. I may not blast this idea to everyone, but I try not to give in to the pressure of snacking. Even when I'm around a lot of moms, and they are feeding their kids snacks, or Zander is fussy and they offer a snack. If I know he has had a full meal prior, I politely decline. Now, if I feel like his meal wasn't sufficient, obviously I will give him a snack, but I try to use it for feeding his hunger, not his fussiness. 

You probably can relate or know what I am talking about. You may even realize you have been guilty of doing this. You know, you are chatting with friends and not ready to leave, but your baby is fussing, or getting into things, so you distract them with a snack. Whatever the case may be, it's easy to do this. Because lets face it, when they are snacking, they are occupied, and you can do what you want. 

BUT...are we teaching them bad habits from the start? 

Are we teaching them to always fill their time and space with food? 

Are we teaching them to eat, even when they are not hungry? 

I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Honey Stinger Gingersnap Waffle---turned into Healthy Cookies!

Yep I did it! I took the Honey Stinger Ginger Snap Waffle, which I fell deeply in love with back in March-April when I was training for the Big D Half Marathon, and I made a Healthy Cookie taste (almost) just like them. Sugar Free, Grain Free, Healthy Gingersnap Cookies

Well, they weren't quite as tasty because they didn't have the yummy, chewy-ness inside of them, but still....for being a no-grain, sugar free cookie, these things were DANG GOOD!

You see, I never used to eat gingersnaps. I might have had one in my lifetime, but when I was at mile 6 during a training run and I tasted that Honey Stinger Gingersnap Waffle, I was like WOAH! Seriously incredible, and I had to have some Gingersnap cookies. 

So...I made it happen! 

And what a great way to celebrate NATIONAL RUNNING DAY too! Taking the best mid-run fuel that I have tasted and making it into healthy cookies and sharing the recipe with you! So run to the store, get the ingredients, and make these cookies to CELEBRATE! Plus, have absolutely no guilt while eating them.

I remember in 2012 when we ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon, we over heard someone say they run because they can. That one day they may not be able to, so for now, they run! And that really stuck with both my mom and myself! So true! I love that. So today I celebrate running, BECAUSE I CAN!

Does Wearing Bright Socks Make Me Run Faster?

I'm not sure if bright socks make you run faster, but if they are tight socks, specifically compression socks, then they will probably make your legs feel better after a long or fast run. 

Have you noticed the recent trend of knee high socks at races? or sometimes the socks are crazy designed or bright colors like these!

Let me tell you though, these socks have more going for them than just being bright, fun, and matching my outfit. (You have to admit they look pretty cute with my bright clothes though!)

These socks are compression socks! 

Now I've shared over the past several months about compression sleeves and how great compression gear can be to help recovery from intense workouts or runs, but I have never worn full socks that are compression. 

These TIUX Compression Socks are not only fun, but they have more function than you would think. 

In the past, compression gear was known for use when flying on long flights or for pilots, and diabetes, to keep the blood flow happening, and to keep you from getting blood clots when sitting for long periods of time on a plane. 

Now days, compression gear is a HUGE HIT with runners!

I remember after running my first half marathon in 2012, we spent the afternoon at an outdoor mall! Ya crazy right! Walking around after running 13.1 miles that morning. And I remember saying, "I wish I had really tight leggings all over my legs. I just feel like that would make them feel better." I said this because my muscles were so flimsy, jello-y, and sore. This was before I knew what compression socks were, and now, they actually have full compression leggings as well. 

When you where compression socks while running, before running, or even after running, (or hard intense workouts), studies have shown that they stimulate blood flow and oxygen to muscles, allowing legs to recover faster from a hard run. 

So no wonder compression gear has become an essential part of a runner's wardrobe! 

Since I have only ever used compression sleeves, it was different having the full sock from TIUX, but I actually really enjoyed it. Now days, you can find most socks (not just for runners), that have some type of compression in them, usually a little band around the arches. So it was nice to have the added compression and stability around my feet. Plus, they have added support around the back part of the ankle, and the socks are a good thickness. Not too thin like you might imagine for compression, but not too thick, so that they are still easily used in the Texas summer that is coming up!

Also because of their specific way of production, they are able to keep their prices at just $35 for a long compression sock. Which in comparison to many other compression gear companies, is a GREAT PRICE! Very affordable if you are interested in trying compression out for the first time! 


 So I will definitely be wearing these throughout the summer as I train for my October Half Marathon (more to come on this next week!)

It may be raining in Texas, but I believe we can officially call it summertime! And what goes better with summertime than some good ol' country music! HELLO, I'M A TEXAN! Just imagine it though, an afternoon at the pool, a cold sonic drink in hand, then driving home in your swimsuit and the windows rolled down singing your heart out to some good country music! Nothing sings SUMMERTIME like that to my Texas heart.  Today though, I won't be talking all about country music, so don't check out on this blog yet.....because although that scenario sounds great, country music isn't exactly my favorite workout music! 

Today I will be sharing my Top 5 Hits on my Summer Workout Playlist (specifically for working out/running), PLUS My Favorite Yoga Playlist! And if you have Spotify or choose to use it, then my playlist will be made available to you!

Okay, as you will see with the Yoga Playlist I am sharing below, I am LOVING Acoustic Covers on Spotify! So a lot of my favorite workout jams these days are acoustic! But don't think necessarily coffee house style, put you to sleep music. They may be classified as acoustic, but still have some spunk to them!

1) Uptown Funk (Live from SXSW 2015) by Cam

-It's an acoustic version, and SO MUCH FUN! A little side note, when I discovered this amazing version of this song, I grabbed my husband on my back porch, and we literally danced to this entire song! This song is great for running, or at Stroller Strides we do an awesome ab workout to this entire song! Definitely a burner! 

2) Lips Are Movin by Meghan Trainor

-Seriously, I LOVE THIS SONG! And it's so much fun to workout to! It really puts an extra pep in your step, or a pep in your rep! (haha see what I did there) Especially when you are getting tired during a workout! And it's so much fun to sing to! 

3) Want To Want Me by Jason Derulo

-Also such a fun and upbeat one for working out! 

4) How Can It Be by Lauren Daigle

-Now I know most people love to workout to fast, upbeat tempo'd music, but that's not always the case for me. Even before I became a Yoga Instructor, I always enjoyed running to slow, inspirational or worship music. So I absolutely love this song and had to include it! 

5) Rascal Flatts -All of it! 

-So in the spirit of it being summer and me being a Texan, I had to include a little country music...and my favorite is Rascal Flatts! I love them and love to listen to them any time!

 So when I talked my husband into running a half marathon with me, he said under one condition. That we would get Spotify Premium. It's like $12 or $14 a month, so I was like, "Whatever..." We had intentions to cancel it after the first few months, but then I realized how amazing it is for my Yoga music as well! PLUS, OMG you can follow your friends, and check out their playlists, and share your playlists with people! 

So I created the most amazing Yoga Playlist....too bad I didn't name it something fun (and now don't know how to change the name). But basically it's acoustic versions of in songs, and perfect for Yoga. It's also my go-to playlist when I'm hanging out, cleaning, or studying for my ACE exam!

Reese's Protein Bites with Vega Sport #FuelYourBetter

I may be doing well with the SUGAR FREE LIVING, but I still get a sweet craving every now and again. That's why I am constantly trying new snack foods and healthy sweets recipes to keep on hand in my home. You can find some of the ones I have created and changed to be sugar free, HERE in my Sugar Free Recipes Archive.  Now by no means am I constantly craving sweets like I used to, but every once in a while I want something yummy and sweet....a lot of times I will get this craving when I've been around yummy desserts all weekend and have opted out. 

Here's an example. This weekend, I was surrounded by crazy amounts of sugar indulgences. I realized on Monday evening after the long weekend was coming to an end, how much sugar I would've eaten if I ate sugar. It would've been a ton, and honestly I bet on Monday night I would've been sitting in self-defeat, frustration, because I wouldn't have felt good physically, and all the healthy living and working out I do would've felt pointless. So I am so thankful I am sugar free. Anyways though, imagine with me for a moment if I ate sugar, here's all the opportunities I would've had to partake in something sugary: 

FRIDAY NIGHT: Cookies & Chocolate the night before one of my best friends weddings.  Sitting around, excited and chatting with girls, it would've been easy to eat a ton of chocolate! 

SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Cake at my friend's daughters 1st birthday party! It was cute, and my husband said it was delicious! 

SATURDAY NIGHT: Some of the best wedding cake that is made in my town. PLUS very sugary margaritas! (for free) and I had NONE, and honestly I wasn't even tempted! 

SUNDAY AFTERNOON: Friend's baby shower....cupcakes! 

SUNDAY EVENING: My friend baked the cupcakes and a cake for the baby shower, so she brought leftovers for my house for our life group get together! 

MONDAY: The cake from the night before was left at my house. In my sugar eating life (lol) I most definitely would've eaten some! 

WOW! 

Isn't that crazy! What a great, and busy weekend I had, but imagine how much sugar I would've eaten if I would've taken advantage of it at each opportunity! Which in my sugar eating life, I probably would've definitely eaten some! 

So, by Sunday night, I decided I needed something sweet in my life! 

That's when I decided to make some Reese's Protein Bites with Vega Sport Protein!

These are the kind of things I like to make on the weekend and keep on hand throughout the week! They are great for when I'm craving a little something sweet. If I need a little pick-me-up before a workout. Or just if I want a nice healthy snack, or post workout protein!

Fresh Strawberry Basil Margarita Recipe

Wahoo!  Everyone celebrate because it's the WEEKEND! And on top of that, it's a LONG WEEKEND! 

So what better to celebrate with, than a HEALTHY, ALL-NATURAL, SUGAR FREE Strawberry Basil Margarita! 

Healthy, All-Natural, Sugar Free, Fresh STRAWBERRY BASIL Margarita Recipe by @brittanysuell

It's basically a smoothie with alcohol in it! Seriously, it's so good! 

Wondering how I decided to create a Strawberry Basil Margarita!?! I know, it sounds weird at first, but it's super yummy. 

Remember when we finished our chicken coop and I shared with you all about the herb garden I planted on the roof of it!? You can see details and photos of my coop and herb garden here. So my basil grew like crazy and I harvested my first herbs from my garden box! (I was seriously so excited!) Plus look how fresh and yummy they look!

So I decided to make a Strawberry Margarita and add some basil to it. And when that went over so well, I invited some girls over last weekend while my husband was gone, and I made them for everyone!

So celebrate Memorial Day weekend with friends, and a fresh margarita! If you don't have fresh basil, that's okay, just grab some from the store, along with REAL strawberries, and it will still be super yummy!
