Let me start this post by letting you know a little bit about me. I, Little Sis have always been labeled with the term, "picky eater." Really I hate being called that, but never fails, friends and family always pick up on my eating habits and tend to use that term to describe me. I on the other hand would call it being preferential. There are foods that I like, and then there are foods that I don't prefer. So when it comes to eating healthy, honestly this has always been difficult for me, mostly because I am not a huge vegetable person. I love meat, fruits, CHEESE (maybe a little too much), and there are a few vegetables that fall within those that I prefer to eat, and then many that fall in my not preferred list. (Although over the years my preferred list has increased!)
So, a veggie burger is not something that has ever seen the inside of my refrigerator. When we make burgers at my house, we use beef, turkey, or venison, either way....it's always meat!
This weekend though, my husband and I decided to give our taste buds a surprise, and make some Sunshine Burgers. These burgers are organic, gluten free, soy free, vegan. They come in various flavors, and we got to try two of those flavors.
The Garden Herb burgers have a mellow yet satisfying flavor and are a versatile addition to your meals. The Black Bean South West burger, with jalapeño, cilantro and black beans, make a zesty veggie burgers adding a southwestern kick to any meal!
So with these burgers I decided to make a cheese burger topped with sautéed mushrooms & onions on a 7-grain wheat bread. It was pretty easy, I just sautéed onions and mushrooms in a garlic olive oil, laid a bed of iceberg lettuce on 7-grain wheat bread, then cooked the Sunshine Garden Herb burger on the stove. Once finished, I topped the burger with cheese and the sautéed mixture, to make a YUMMY Sunshine Burger! Paired with a side of fresh fruit made for a wonderful, light yet filling summertime lunch.
Now before I tell you about the taste of the burgers, let me just say, one thing I loved about the burgers was the convenience of them. I knew I would be cooking them Saturday at lunch, so Friday evening I went to take them out of the freezer to thaw. It was then that I decided to read the directions, which good thing I did. I discovered that Sunshine Burgers don't have to be thawed, but can be pulled straight from the freezer and cooked on the grill, stove, or in the microwave. I even loved that they could just be popped in the microwave for a quick meal on your lunch break. See, so convenient.
Now to the good part.....to hear from my tastebuds.
Well, like I mentioned, this was my first ever veggie burger. And once I got over my preferential fear of eating something made all from veggies when I am used to a burger patty being made all of meat, then I was able to enjoy the burger.
I ate the Black Bean South West burger, (I opted out of the bread since I'm trying to drop that baby weight.) My exact comment while eating was this..."This tastes like straight Mexican Food in a burger." And to me, that equals a GREAT thing! Being from Texas, I love Mexican food, so I loved a burger that tasted like Mexican food. It was full of flavor, and definitely yummy.
My husband chose to try the Garden Herb flavor. He really enjoyed it, but after trying the South West flavor, I believe he will have that one next time. Which I saw via the Sunshine Burger Facebook page seemed to be popular with most people.
All in all, I don't think we will be trading in our meat burgers for veggie burgers all the time, butI wouldn't mind keeping some Sunshine Burgers on hand for a convenient, great tasting and healthy alternative. Easy to use as a quick meal, plus you can do all different things with them, such as crumble them and use them as a salad topper.
Here's a little about the burger.
