My No-Sugar Journey Update! by @brittanysuell

Well, I've officially been a month and a half with pretty much NO SUGAR

WHAT?? Is that even real life?

It has honestly been a fun journey for me. I have enjoyed learning. Even when I "fail." AKA start eating some peanut butter and realize after several bites that it has sugar.

I'm definitely not beating myself up over a few bites of sugar-infested peanut butter. I did however put the jar up, and will start buying any nut butters naturally. (got to keep an eye on those nutrition labels...even in the "healthy" stuff)

The Sugar Detox

Here's a few things that got me through the weeks of what they call the "Sugar Detox."

Sugar Detox-the first several weeks of giving up sugar. When your body is telling your mind..."I NEED SUGAR." Even though you don't, you are just so used to it, and maybe even addicted to it that you think you need it!

So, a few ways I tricked my mind into soothing it's sugar cravings, is by indulging in natural sugars!

I was leaning heavily on fruits and their natural sugars during those weeks. Having about 4 servings a day. (now I've gone to about 2 servings a day).

I also ate almond butter (the non-sugar infested one), with an apple literally every day! It was my go-to dessert! Or afternoon sweet snack! Soooo good!

Just because an item contains sugar doesn't mean it's bad!

One thing I have really learned more about is reading food labels!

To start, I first look at how many grams of sugar the item contains. Then, once I see the amount of sugar, I look to the list of ingredients!

Just because it has sugar in it doesn't mean it's bad and I can't have it. I have to find out where that sugar is coming from!

If the list of ingredients says SUGAR...then that straight up means it's a no go.

There are some items that will show sugar in the nutritional facts though, and not actually contain sugar. It will just be the counting sugar from the natural sugars or fructose that is in the product. A good example of this is the World Market Sweet Potato Chips. The label shows that it has a certain amount of sugars, but the ingredient list reads sweet potatoes, oil, and salt. There you have it. It's as natural as some baked sweet potatoes at home. All that sugar is just the natural sugar in sweet potatoes, which are SO YUMMY, and a great thing to eat all the time by the way! (and that don't need added brown sugar or marshmallows! FYI! because they are so sweet naturally, why do we think we need to add more stuff to them!?!? I don't get it!)

Do I still crave sugar?

Well yes I do at times. BUT this has been the fun part of the journey! Learning to cook and bake various treats for my family that have ZERO SUGAR!! and they are still sweet!

Say hello to my Blueberry Muffin Recipe! Yep that's real life! Blueberry Muffins with NO SUGAR! and so yummy!

Banana Pancakes! Yep, I can still have pancakes! and I either eat them with a nut butter on top, or pure maple syrup!

*pure maple syrup is one of the tricky ones. It may say it contains lots of sugar, but if the ingredient list says "maple syrup" then you are good to go. Just have it in moderation.

Homemade Larabar Recipe! Such a yummy treat, and super nutritious! Plus this was the first time I cooked with dates. That has been a fun learning experience.

Strawberry-Banana Nice Cream....a great snack for you or the kids!

I also have a sugar free cake I've been playing with the recipe for. Trying to get it right for my son's first birthday in April. I'll be sharing that in the next month or so!

HONEY is my new best friend!

Dates & Honey are my go-to natural sweeteners!

But honey, honey is my new best friend!

I use honey to sweeten mostly everything! Even my coffee! It is so good in coffee! Even if you aren't even remotely interested in going to a SUGAR FREE life, I would still encourage you to try honey in your coffee! I even order my coffee at coffee shops, Starbucks included to be sweetened with honey. Just try it. Tomorrow morning, forgo your normal regime of coffee, and try it with a spoonful of honey and maybe some milk if you prefer! It's tasty!

[bctt tweet="I've gone 1.5months with no sugar! Woah! Here's the deets on how I'm doing it! @brittanysuell #leaveyourlegacy"]

So there you have it, a little about my journey, and how it's been. Honestly, sometimes I feel like I'm cheating the No Sugar lifestyle by still getting to enjoy some of these yummy things. But then I have to remember, just because I'm doing no sugar doesn't mean that I don't get to eat good, or even sweet foods. Obviously I have to be careful not to over indulge, and still eat healthy, not just take the no sugar factor as all the weight of what I'm eating. But, it's nice to still be able to have something sweet sometimes.

Check out my Leave Your Legacy Podcast and follow my NO SUGAR JOURNEY in 2015! I've gotten the Jan. and Feb. episode up so far, and I would love for you to get to know me a little more via my podcast and hearing first hand how my journey is going!

How Bout a Sugar Free Recipe!

How to make a yummy Acai Bowl! Full of nutrition, and topped with natural coconut and Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts! From @brittanysuell

An Acai Bowl is a super easy and yummy snack to make for an afternoon snack, (especially when it starts to warm up), or as a late night snack or dessert. It has an ice cream like texture, but is fruity, and full of nutrition. Plus when you top this with all-natural Hemp Hearts from Manitoba Harvest, you're adding more protein and omegas to this already power packed snack!

How to make a yummy Acai Bowl topped with Hemp Hearts!

First you will need some Acai.

They come in packs of 4 like this. You can find them in the frozen section!

Second, you will need Hemp Hearts!

How to make a yummy Acai Bowl! Full of nutrition, and topped with natural coconut and Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts! From @brittanysuell

You can get some of this nutritious goodness from Manitoba Harvest, or ENTER TO WIN SOME BELOW!

Third, you will need a high powered blender and some milk of your choice.

1-Toss the frozen Acai Smoothie pack into your blender (I used one pack for one bowl). Add a little bit of milk. (I like to use coconut or almond). Blend on high. Add only a little milk at a time, and continue adding some when needed. You want the Acai to stay pretty thick, like ice cream.

2-You can add some frozen berries in with the Acai, or a frozen banana if you want a little extra flavor and more fruity goodness.

3-Use an ice cream scoop to put it in a bowl. and top it with your HEMP HEARTS from Manitoba Harvest

4-ENJOY!

*The Acai is a little tart, so you can always add a little honey to make it a tad sweeter.

yoga people bags

Don't even tell me that I will NOT be the CUTEST YOGI at training!! haha because of my bag of course!!

Anyways, this bag is awesome! Not only does Yoga People Bags have amazing prints for their bags, but they are super roomie as well!

yoga people bags

On a normal basis I leave my mat, strap, and block in my bag! That's pretty roomie on it's own.  A few weeks ago though, I ran to the gym from my house (1.6miles one way), and did a yoga class then ran back.  All I took was my yoga bag, and I fit everything that I needed in it! I was so amazed! But even with just your mat in it, it's not TOO big.  It has a great/roomie inside zipper pocket, then two small outside button pockets.  I use those for my phone, headphones, money, etc.

Big Sis & I both loves these bags!

So in honor of me being at Yoga Certification Training, and Yoga People Bags being so AWESOME, 2 of you are going to WIN  a bag of your choice!!!

Just So Flippin' Excited

little signautresHey everybody! Little Sis here, and I am JUST SO FLIPPIN' EXCITED!

Let me just start by saying I AM GOING TO BE A YOGA INSTRUCTOR BY NEXT MONTH!!!

OMG!

This summer has been crazy, with getting pregnant, and losing the baby, and all the emotions and hard times that came with that, then with trying to buy a house and going through a ton of hassles that put us off a month later than expected, we have done a lot of waiting around this summer.

And in the midst of all that we were going through, my husband and I felt that the Lord told us that we need to START DREAMING again! He minded me that what we are doing now isn't the "FULLNESS" of what he created us for, and he "Wasn't done with us yet!" So since that big revelation at the end of May, we have started dreaming!

Obviously I am very passionate about fitness! (that's why we have a blog about it :-) ) & I just love yoga! I love the way it makes me feel, I love the escape it gives me, I love being challenged and growing in my skill, flexibility, & strength, and I love it! And I have such a desire to teach it!

So that is why I am going to Austin next week to get certified! I am ecstatic, and cannot wait!

Then last week something great happened! Currently I work at a local university as the Student Activities Coordinator.  Well last week our fitness department called me and offered me the job as the Teacher for the Yoga Course that they offer as a PE Credit! And I accepted! I am so excited about this, and am just praying for the opportunity to teach yoga even more at local gyms, etc.

I am pumped about exploring my dreams, following my dreams, and getting opportunities to walk out in those dreams! I am so thankful that the Lord got our attention and reminded us to keep dreaming!

Stay tuned next week as I travel to Austin to get certified!! We will have an AWESOME YOGA GIVEAWAY FOR YOU!!

Gluten Free Cooking Class

So, a few weeks ago some friends and I signed up for a Gluten Free cooking class. We decided to make it a girl's night and leave the men at home!

Naturally Fit Sisters Cooking Class

We grabbed a few bottles of wine, and drove 15 minutes down the road to a nice restaurant in a tiny Texas town called Clyde! We were really excited.  As you know, I have only recently decided to start changing my eating habits! (You can read about my choice to Eat Clean Here.) So I was very excited that not only was I going to hear from someone that cooked organically in her own kitchen, but she also has a family, and her own business.  *Is this Super Woman?* I also loved that in her profile for the class it mentioned that she used to teach yoga.  Of course you know that I love Yoga, and even though I wouldn't say my deciding to Eat Clean came straight from getting more involved in Yoga, it may have had a little to do with it.  Either way, I was very interested to hear from Jaclyn Harwell from My Organic Kitchens.

Anyways, we had such a great time! Jaclyn shared her journey that led her to start eating semi-Gluten Free, which had a lot to do with her children's behavior.  In short, her son had very out of control behavior and after going to a doctor who suggested she take her 3 year old to a psychiatrist to be put on medication she had a serious change of heart.  It was such a moving story, to see a mom share about the struggles she went through, and that she actually thought she might go through with putting her 3 year old on medication.  That is when she decided to start changing her families diet.  She started with excluding sugars from their food, and it went on from there.  It was really neat to hear her point of view, and how she literally has her own observation lab in her home.  With small children, and a very aware mother, it is easy to notice how different foods affect her children and their actions.

My Organic Kitchen

We got to watch her make various foods, and try each one! Here are the items that we got to eat!

Bell Pepper "Nachos," where she used Sauerkraut as the cheese.  Honestly, I am a very picky eater, and never eat Bell Peppers, but on this night I ate every bit of the food she served.  And I really enjoyed the bell pepper nachos, of course I felt like they were more like tacos.  I have already made them at home for my husband.

We also had a Prickly Pear Lemonade.  I think that is a specialty that the restaurant Bonterra Blu serves all the time. This was the brightest colored drink I have ever seen and it had a very good taste to it!

Next we had Cauliflower Shredded Beef Wraps, I am going to get really real with yall here and admit that I have never had cauliflower in my life! But, like I said, I ate everything, and these were actually VERY Good.  I will definitely be trying this out in my home.  Plus the beef she got from the Abilene, TX local Farmer's Market, which I am excited to try out.

Lastly, was the yummy dessert! Yes you can have dessert when eating healthy, or Gluten Free in this case.  She made us Cheesecake! It was definitely delicious, and so interesting to see that she made the crust with mostly flax seeds and dates.

I would have to say that the biggest thing I took away from this class, the thing that has impacted me the most on a daily basis since then, is to use all natural honey as a sweetener.  The weekend after the class I went to our local Farmer's Market, and purchased organic honey.  I have never been big on honey, but since then I have used it in place of my artificial sweeteners that I am used to in my coffee: TASTES GREAT, and honestly with honey and my creamer, I can't taste anything different.  I have also included it in a few recipes that call for sugar.  One was a homemade fruit roll up that my sister and I made together! (I will be sharing that yummy and all organic recipe with yall soon!)

So, I am so excited to say that I have gotten to connect with Jaclyn from My Organic Kitchen since her first class and she has graciously decided to offer one of our readers the chance to WIN a Dozen Gluten Free Cinnamon Rolls!!

Naturally Fit Sisters & My Organic Kitchen

All you have to do to WIN is enter in the form below! We will pick at Winner at random next Thursday!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Also, if you are interested, and a local, you may want to check out My Organic Kitchen's next class at Bonterra Blu! This time she will be talking about going beyond Gluten Free with a cooking demo and tasting! It's well worth it believe me.  Or if you want check out the other classes they are offering in this series! I am hoping to make one or two more before the summer is over!

Also be sure to check out My Organic Kitchen's page! She sells various foods by the dozen, and they are all yummy, organic, and Gluten Free! She also sells her food at the Abilene Farmer's Market.

Cause I'm SASSY!

A couple of months ago we were both sent some amazing headbands and a key chain faub from Sassy Bands. If you have been following us for sometime you know that we love headbands. We have tried out a few and even sale some in our Naturally Fit Sisters shop. I can tell you that I wasn't expecting these bands to be too much different than some of the other that we have tried... but man, I LOVE them! You see, Big Sis here has this Big Ol' Round head... and it makes it hard to keep things on my head... but these stay on too! I love these because they are stylish AND fitness apparel.

photo

Sassy Bands has such a variety of bands from size to style! It was so fun and HARD to chose which ones we wanted to try! They are constantly coming out with new ribbons that it makes you want to keep ordering more and more... this is a good thing. We both had the opportunity to review both solid, glittery, designed, and even worded items... and skinny and thick! We loved them all. The skinny ones are very stylish and can be worked to fit any outfit! We especially love wearing the glitter ones because they are just OH so cute! I, Big Sis, have to wash my hair EVERY. SINGLE. MORNING of my life or it will be oily, oily, oily. Lil Sis can go like a year without washing hers! :) With that said, the Sassy Bands are so great for me on those mornings I want to be rebellious and NOT wash my hair.

The Key Faubs are amazing. I would dare to say that I haven't lost my keys in sometime! :) I love it. Sure, I have been out of commission (running) for a few months, but my key faub is for sure encouragement to get going again!!! I have been using it since I got it a couple of months back and it is still clean... I know that Little Sis said that if she were to do it again she would get something with less white, though the orange fits her perfectly. I love mine and it has just as much white in it. So it would just be what you think is the best fit for you. I personally LOVE my key faub because it is so cute and different than what others have.

The key faubs are made very well. I have used mine faithfully, like I said, since I relieved it and it is not tearing or unravelling or anything. I have gotten many compliments about my key faub asking if I have made it. I sure wish I could take credit for it! I have had other ones but this one is made to hold up more than the others I have had. I like that they are shorter and thicker too, haha, just a personal preference.

DSC_0688

DSC_0701

Sassy Bands can make them in all sizes and styles... she even makes them for babies! I have been meaning to order some for my little lady, but life has been- busy! :) We tried to let her wear one, but it didn't work so well. You can see in the picture above how it is  on my head. The great thing about this band, I don't have to put bobby pins in it to hold it. The skinny ones hold better in my hair than the thicker ones... but it is quite possibly the silly round shape of my head. The bands are very comfortable (especially the one above) and I don't even notice it is there, plus it is adorable! DSC_0708DSC_0712

Along with just how cute they are and how well they are made, I Little Sis have to say that they seriously do stay on so well.  We were at the pool for several hours the other day, and I wore one jumping in and out of the pool, playing with my nephew, throwing him around, etc. and my Sassy Band never budged! If I am not wearing a Bondi Band these days, the Sassy Band is my go to headband! Plus I just love shiny, glittery things! That is why all three of the ones I got, and my key faub are all glitter!!

Now I am so excited that Paula, the owner of Sassy Bands is so gracious to give 3 WINNERS a set of Sassy Bands! That means that three of you will get a small, medium, and large band of your choice!! Just enter for your chance to WIN below!

Latitude Gear RX Giveaway

So....today we have an awesome Giveaway from Latitude Gear RX!

Review from Lil Sis:

I was so excited to get to review these shirts! I could tell in the picture that they are a nice material....and if you know me I order a lot of t-shirts for my job, so over the years I have become sort of a shirt snob! I only wear the best t-shirts! No need to clutter my drawer with stiff, awkward fitting shirts!

This shirt was so great that I got two, a razor back tank which is great! The razor is a good width and the shirt itself is a great length! Which I struggle with in shirts sometimes! latitude gear

And I got this awesome Burpees t-shirt! This is by far my favorite t-shirt! It fits great, is comfy, and I just love the saying! I HEART BURPEES! & the heart is actually someone doing Burpees!

Plus they have several others like this! Like an I Love Squats one, and the color combos on their shirts are so cute!

Check out the Women's shirts here!

Today, instead of Big Sis sharing a review of her shirt, we actually have a guys point of view from Big Sis' Husband!

Since the wife was so very pregnant at the time of this review she asked for a men's shirt for me to review for them. Big and Lil Sis thought this would be a great addition to their reviews since most of their reviews are solely between them, the ladies! When Big Sis told me that I would be getting a shirt to review I thought, "ok, that is cool..." But when the shirt came I was blown away by what a great shirt it was. Seriously, I like this shirt so much that I would totally be down with being walking advertisement for LatitudeGearRX if they want to send over more shirts for me to review! :) In true man form this has to be short and sweet.... and in true military form, I need to use bullets! So here you guys have it:

PROS of LATITUDEGearRX Shirt:

-Form Fitting -Not uncomfortable under armpits -Longer tail than other shirts, doesn't ride up back with sholder presses, pull ups -Compliments an athletic physique -Material is non-restrictive, breathable, form-fitting -Can easily wear out and about as well -Stylish 1

Check out the men's shirts here!

From Big Sis:

Husband seriously loves this shirt... he wears it to work out in, play softball in, and just to go out! It looks great on him too! When we got it in the mail I was astonished how amazing the material felt. I have not worn the shirt, but I can tell you that the quality of the shirt amazed me. It is by far the best quality T-Shirt that we have reviewed to date and we have been able to review several. I am just sad I didn't get to do the review... But we are so excited that we were able to bring this review to you and offer you a Giveaway!

Seriously, this is one of the best companies we have worked with ... and if you have been around, you know we have worked with quite a few. Not only do they have wonderful customer service, but they are fast with shipping too. There was a little miscommunication on OUR part on which shirt Lil Sis wanted to review... and they sent her another and quickly. Emails with the company have been quick and forth coming AND they are even going to send ME one when I get where I want to be... so I can review it for myself!

I am so excited to share with you that we have 5 Shirts to giveaway! This is a great giveaway and we hope you will enter and share with your friends! One of the first ways to enter is to GO TO THEIR WEBSITE and comment on our blog WHICH shirt is your favorite... because if you are one of the winners.. you get to chose the shirt of your choice! How great is that!!

Wooden Beads!

What woman doesn't love to accessorize.

Try to tell me that you don't get excited when you see those photos on Pinterest of organized closets with each accessory in its perfect place! I love those pins :-)

Personally, my closet is huge, and full.  I have always, since high school, loved jewelry, clothes, purses, etc.  BUT....I do not buy expensive stuff...I am a cheap shopper which pays off most of the time! I mean when your on a budget you have to shop cheap!

Needless to say, I still love my jewelry.  I have so many necklaces, earrings, and bracelets! Usually I am always wearing some type of jewelry...although I go through stages of how much, etc.   As we all do I'm sure.  But I definitely never pass up a good piece of jewelry...especially at a deal.

And that's exactly what we have for you all today....I mean what better of a deal do you get than FREE!

Pam from Simply Livly wanted to partner with us to bring you all a GIVEAWAY for this wonderful Red Wooden Bib Necklace.  This is one of her most popular sellers.  I love the wooden beads! To me wooden bead necklaces are so unique because the few that I have are all from different countries that I have visited...I can specifically think of wooden necklaces from Africa & Trinidad that I bought while on a mission trip there.  So to me wooden beads have an exotic feel because they aren't the norm that you may have in your jewelry box!

Check out this beautiful Red Wooden Bib Necklace:

Wanda from iGlowRunning

"I am an active runner and passionate about fashion. I love to wear girly and glowing outfits when I run or go to the gym and that is how I came to the idea of iGlow Running.

I used to have my own shop called Dream Dress by Wanda in Maryland were I specialized in formal wear and wedding gowns. All the gowns were designed and made in my shop all by myself. I had the shop for several years and went back to teach as I am a Spanish teacher.

I started iGlow Running by coincidence. In October I was going to a Firefly race in Atlanta and there was a contest for the best running costume and decided to make a fun and sparkly outfit but still comfortable for running. I received so many complements during the race and that is how the idea of iGlow Running started. I opened the Etsy shop in November and it is really taking off. The concept of iGlow Running is fun and comfort. I don't want my outfits to look like costumes and that is why I combine athletic seams and finishes. What girl doesn't want to shine after weeks and months of training. So when the day of the race comes,it  is your day, you want to shine...you want to GLOW, iGlow Running."

Bread + 6 kids??

WHO DOES THAT!?

I have been wanting to make some more homemade bread for a few weeks.. but life and all these munchkins have just held me back. I have wondered... how am I going to make all of this bread with 6+ kids at my house? I am suppose to be teaching them new things everyday, not making bread for my own pleasure! By the time the kids leave and we have had dinner... and Noah has gone to bed.. well quite frankly, I don't want to mess my kitchen up again!

Today it hit me!! I'll turn our baking bread experience into a lesson that we all do together! Dare I say.. it was fun? We had such a blast! The kids listened to me and actively participated as we went through each step. We felt each texture and I told them everything we were doing.. They had so much fun.

We began by grinding our whole wheat in our wheat grinder, courtesy of Nutrition Lifestyles. The kids LOVED this. The loud noise, plus being outside, being able to put the wheat in the grinder themselves, watching it grind, and seeing the end product was TOO MUCH fun! After we did that, I moved my Bosch, also courtesy of Nutrition Lifestyles, to the kids table and we used it to mix and knead our bread. Then we used oil and made our loaves.. then baked them!! YUMMY! If you want my recipe, just ask.. it is also courtesy of Nutrition Lifestyles. It is a great website with great kitchen tools. A lot of my kitchen is from there.... and yes, it is my mother and father in laws business! Check them out.

In the end we had 6 beautiful loaves of bread + four small loaves that the kids got to do for themselves! It was so fun. Oh and SOO yummy! Of course AFTER we make these six loaves of bread- I REMEMBER!! I still have some frozen waiting for me! :) At least we had fun.

Next time you feel too busy to do that project that you want to do... remember you can engage your child(ren) with you... because they can HELP! You will three birds at once..keeping the kids busy, TEACHING the kids, and getting your project completed!

Hooray for Fresh Bread & Happy Children!

Here is the wonderful recipe for all of you to have and try on your own! Be sure to let your kids help too, they will love it!
100% Whole Wheat Bread
In a mixing bowl, combine and mix on a low speed until well blended:
6 Cups Hot Tap Water
2/3 Cup Oil
2/3 Cup Honey
2 Tablespoons Kitchen Specialities Vital Wheat Gluten (optional)
2 Tablespoons SAF Instant Yeast
2 Tablespoons Kitchen Specialities Dough Enhancer
4-6 Cups freshly milled whole wheat flour
Switch the speed of your mixer down to a lower number:
Add slowly 6-10 cups whole wheat flour while kneading
Add 2 Tablespoons of Salt
Sprinkle in the last of the flour--1/4 cup at a time (you know that enough flour has been added when the dough pulls away from the side cleanly, no longer sticking while it kneads)

Knead: On the lowest speed for another 5 minutes
Shape: Into loaf pans and let rise until the dough doubles in size
Bake:at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown
Yields: 6 loaves

I hope you all enjoy this recipe as much as we have.  If you have any questions or if you try this recipe stop by over at Natural-Nurturer and let me know what you think!
